Reader Tips - Open Thread

Back from a quick trip to Cold Lake, Alberta, where they "broadcast" the fireworks over the lake Saturday night for the troops in Afghanistan.

A few items I picked up last week, along with some new ones:

A cartoon you won't believe.

The role that democracy played in alienating Al Zarqawi from his Sunni allies.

60 years old and wearing it a hell of a lot better than Cher.

A dead heat between the left and right in the Mexico elections.

Superman loses his citizenship.

Mark Steyn has, as usual, a perfect article on the idiocy of Stevens' judgment of the US Supreme Court on Al Qaeda. The article is on his web site, 'a right to jihad'.

It shows how befuddled the world is, in dealing with this new type of war, a war that is not being fought by nation-against-nation, that is not an internal civil war, but is an international ideological movement against democracy.

The international bodies, such as the UN, and national judicial systems (US Supreme Court) have no idea how to, definitionally, deal with this new reality.

Steyn sees it clearly, as usual.

"60 years old and wearing it a hell of a lot better than Cher."

Oh, puhhlease !!!! It's clear you're not male, but no need to be so blatant. Meow !!

And politics has sweet bugger all to do with it.

Via Bourque, the Toronto Star has an unsigned article suggesting that the Hockey Hall of Fame is a misogynist old boys club for not inducting any female members:

www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1151878208412&call_pageid=968867503640

Presumably they are also able-ist for their lack of sled hockey players, ageist for not celebrating the accomplishments of seniors and children, and of course racist for being 99% white.

The Star goes on to suggest Manon Rheaume, Hazel McCallion and Haley Wickenheiser (being a Liberal newspaper they conveniently forget Charlotte Whitton; too right wing I guess) all deserve to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

I hereby nominate Brian McCabe and Chris Pronger for the Hall of Fame induction in the "Sensitive New Age Guy" category; McCabe for stylishly wearing pastel colours whilst being publicly pussywhipped to an unprecedented degree in the media last week, and Pronger for confirming what Micheal Adams told us in Fire And Ice about Canadian men and their firm, anomalous belief that men should not be the heads of households.

You'll notice that it is primarily Canadian hockey players who are pussywhipped by their wives; Eastern Europeans and American boys tend to be more sensible in this regard.

Bush: fitness: intelligence.

Read somewhere that he is considered in the top 5% in physical fitness for his age group (a very serious off-road bicylist), IQ of about 125 (extrapolated from SAT scores; top 1% (?), reformed drug and alcohol abuser, spiritual, fine family man. In short a very fine specimen of male humanity --manliness. And think of the almost superhuman mental endurance required to take the kind of abuse dumped on him. No wonder he has no hesitation in referring openly and easily to the BIG SIX O. Finally, how impressive for a bonafide American blue-blood to have such the common touch.

...ahhh Cold Lake. Aptly named. First time I jumped in the lake back in '78 I found out why it was called that. I couldn't stop shaking for about 10 mins after.

Then swimming out about 100' having a stupid horse fly come at me all the way...couldn't believe it. Finally smacked it in the water and thought dead till it buzzed off after a sec or two.

One thing, I have been a few places and that water has the best taste and bite anywhere in the world. Often thought of starting a bottling plant up there.

What's with Cold Lake South (Grand Centre)? Dumb name, should have left it, but guess like me tired of having Canada Post send our stuff to Grande Cache...

I do miss the lakes and trees here in Calgary, but I don't miss the mosquitoes. Although they are bad around construction sites here...

I googled "botox-free" and came up with
http://www.kingmaker.net/lotusseedlift.htm

Egad, should nominate that site for the "websites that suck" award...

Then click on the Dr. Joel D. Wallach, B.S., D.V.M., N.D. picture...

I certainly agree with Me No Dhimmi, and would just add that it probably has to do with the fact that W decided twenty-plus years ago to grow up, while Cher, for example, never has.

Kandahar Coffee. No Drive-Through...-

"We now sell more than 500 cups in a typical day."

"Mr Sharifi is now building a whole new floor above the coffee shop."

The coffee shop's clientele in Kandahar is dominated by local and foreign journalists, NGO workers and students.

Saifullah Habibi is a regular customer who has hardly missed a day since the coffee shop opened.

"You have no idea how happy I feel here," he says.

"By late evening, I find myself dreading the moment it will close for the night."

Customers say the coffee shop has spawned its own community of sorts.

"Conflicts and war have robbed us of our thinking. We need a space where we can think about how to deal with the label of terrorism and Talebanisation that has been slapped on us," Mr Habibi says."

NORTHCOM, Canada Command Cooperate to Secure North America

Posted by SandRat

American Forces Press Service | Tech. Sgt. Devin Fisher

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo., July 3, 2006 – U.S. Northern Command has a new partner in defending North America from future terrorist and natural disasters. During his first official visit to NORTHCOM headquarters here as the commander of Canada Command, Canadian Forces Lt. Gen. Marc Dumais promised the two nations would take their already strong military cooperation to new heights. Canada Command is the Canadian Forces formation responsible for all of Canada's routine and contingency domestic operations. The creation of Canada Command was based on the new international security environment and a commitment to place greater emphasis on the on the defense of Canada and North America, officials said.

Cher certainly was, by any reasonable generic standard, some degree of hot. On the other hand, Miss Dolly Parton, who turns 60 this year, along with President Bush, and Cher, has always been and still is cool. Happy 60th, Miss Parton, God bless you, we love you.

Now on to the Kandahar Starbucks and Tim Horton's stories. They remind me of that time that guy was released from Gitmo early on because he had been determined to be ancillary. When he was asked what the US should do to compensate him, he said: Green Card.

One of the things that people are forgetting about Wahabbism is that it is not at all clear that they are winning the overall battle for the hearts and minds of the very Muslims they are accusing of infidelity. The slow, bumpy, global march to free markets in goods, services, and ideas may very well, I suggest, eventually steamroll over the latest dissenters, as it always, eventually, has before. Might not a Muslim reformation and enlightenment take place this century?

Until then, our job is to keep driving the steamroller, while avoiding innocents to the greatest degree possible. Just keep in mind, y'all, that not all the parts of the steamroller are military, for example, some are coffee, and green cards, and freedom.

That said, thanks, as always, to the Canadian Forces service men and women. Because part of the steamroller is war, and it's the hardest job.

NYT's Layers of Editorial Oversight

In another New York Times piece defending their decision to publish national security secrets, they raise the issue of Colonel Oliver North: A History of Publishing, and Not Publishing, Secrets. (Hat tip: Doss.)

In 1985, The Times reported that a Marine colonel in the White House was overseeing the secret war against the Nicaraguan contras. The newspaper withheld the name of the colonel because the White House said printing it might endanger his life, recalled a former Times reporter, Joel Brinkley.

The Post named Oliver North the next day. “There was absolutely no reason not to print his name,” he said.

Just one problem.

Oliver North fought with the contras, not against them.

Another score for the top-notch editorial staff of the old gray lady.

Danes Sentence Entire Clan for Honour Killing

http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/1143

This week, for the very first time, a court in Europe sentenced nine members of the same family for the honour killing of a female relative.

...the general practice so far has been to sentence only the actual murderers. Last Tuesday in Denmark, however, a jury of the Østre Landsret ruled that not only the man who pulled the trigger was guilty, but every family member who collaborated in "punishing" Ghazala Khan, an 18-year old Danish-born woman of Pakistani origin, who was shot by her brother, 30-year old Akhtar Abbas, on 23 September 2005, two days after her marriage.

...The Danish verdict is historic, not only because the entire clan was punished but also because the head of the family, who ordered the killing, was given a heavier sentence than the actual murderer. Families often choose a family member who is still a minor to carry out an honour assassination because, being a minor, he is likely to get a more lenient sentence under Western law.

Excellent news, TimR. Nice to see the Danes doing their part of driving the steamroller.

Egyptian Cleric Teaching Death Cult Ideology to Kids

These two videos are some of the most appalling I’ve ever seen, as Egyptian Cleric Sheik Muhammad Sharaf Al-Din, on a children’s show on Egypt’s Al-Nas TV, teaches kids to:

1) Hate and kill Jews:

2) Hate and kill infidels, and aspire to “martyrdom” and jihad:

Sick, sick, sick.

The US currently gives Egypt about $2 billion a year in foreign aid.

RE: LACK of KIA's in Gaza (for now).

As mentioned previously, Israel hits most targets at 1:43 AM. Most targets are empty. ...-

Quote:
if you havent noticed the LACK of KIA's caused by Israel's show invasion, there is a interesting point that Israel hits most targets at 1:43 AM when they are empty, up to now.... Olmert has been like the older guy holding BACK the head of a crazy child that will not calm down, the palestinians are blood lust thirsty, they want to kill or be killed, israel is holding them back from the point of no return...

whether Israel does this now or not, the palestinians want real war, and in the end, they will get it...
