Not everyone is happy this morning.
Not only is al-Zarqawi dead, but so are 7 of his top advisors. That's a good thing. In terms of World War II, it would be like us killing Hermann Göring plus 7 top generals. One would think that this would be accepted by everyone as a great victory, but unfortunately that is not so.
What the BBC didn't say about "one of Islam's most renowned Imams";
In one of his [Saudi] sermons, Saudi sheikh Abd Al-Rahman Al-Sudayyis, imam and preacher at the Al-Haraam mosque – the most important mosque in Mecca – beseeched Allah to annihilate the Jews. He also urged the Arabs to give up peace initiatives with them because they are "the scum of the human race, the rats of the world, the violators of pacts and agreements, the murderers of the prophets, and the offspring of apes and pigs."
Syria, is starting a "media campaign" against honour killings.
World Net Daily seems to be the only outlet reporting (online, at least) that Congress is opening hearings into possible foreign connections to the Oklahoma City bombing.
Sort of a theme going on here, I know. Add your own in the comments. Any topic is fine.

Not on above topic--I heard some of statements by members this morning in the House--don't know what the whole story is but an MP was complaining about some material put out by CBC and added to the Sask school curriculum and apparently it is presented as fact but is not? I wish I had heard the whole thing but this is all I heard--anyone have the info on this?

These guys got busted because of intelligence collected over a period of time and finally in a sting as they tried to purchase 3 tons of fertilizer. I don't see anything stopping 17 citizens from going around to the various Canadian Tires, Home Depot's etc. and buying a bag or two at a time until they have their quota.

It is interesting that you bring up charitable donations. Every spring and fall, I am innundated with calls from various charities (usually having the word "child" or "children" in their monologue). I just keep asking to be taken off their list. I have no idea where the money is ending up or being syphoned off to, perhaps Joe Volpe's next camapign!
I remember watching a W5 investigation a few years ago into the Telmarketing for charities scheme. It seems this one telemarketer has quite a number of charities under the umbrella that they telemarket for. They call on behalf of each charity and issue the receipts. The money is divided up among the charities. The catch is that 75% of the funds raised are eaten up in "administrative costs". I don't suppose the charities care as whatever the telemarketer can raise is more than they had before and they didn't have to do anything for it. I've been wondering what kind of organizations these charities may be a front for and does it take a full 75% to administer this thing? If not, where is the rest of that money going.
So I buy Girl Guide cookies, give to my local church and support the occasional local event.

Just when Estonian society was bracing itself for endless lectures about “true Western values” and the need to train our capacity for tolerance, the entire matter became a farce. On the same day the Estonian media reported that there had never been any harassing of the ambassador’s husband. The papers wrote that the real reason for the ambassador’s early departure was the fact that his Cuban husband did not like the Estonian weather nor the local night life. Hence he was threatening to leave the ambassador unless the latter moved to somewhere warmer and livelier.
Now this ambassador will be sent to Montreal where I trust his husband will find the night life more to his liking. Not sure about the weather though.

The indictment against Terry Nichols:
Count 1: Conspiracy to Use a Weapon of Mass Destruction
The grand jury charges that beginning in September 1994, Timothy James McVeigh and Terry Lynn Nichols did conspire with others unknown to the grand jury to use a weapon of mass destruction, namely an explosive bomb placed in a truck against persons within the United States and against property that was owned and used by the United States and by a department and agency of the United States, namely, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, Oklahoma City, resulting in death, grievous bodily injury and destruction of the building.
"JERUSALEM – Kadima USA, the American branch of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's political party, featured on its official website policy summaries that match almost word-for-word detailed paragraphs on the same topics published on the Texas Democratic Party's website.
In many instances, the only differences between the Texas website and that of Kadima were the inclusion of the words "Kadima," "Jews" and "Israel" in the place of "Texas," "Democratic Party" and "America."
One Kadima USA representative would not comment on the organization's website and its likeness to the Texas Democratic Party's site, but he warned WorldNetDaily against printing a story on the subject.
"You are making enemies with the wrong people," said Solomon Vas Diaz, executive director of Kadima USA."

Posted by: MaryM at June 9, 2006 3:19 PMFor some reason major Canadian newspapers did not cover this story. As far as I can see only the Globe gave any coverage: a one paragraph news brief, that did not mention Canada, in the Ottawa print edition. No wonder so many of our politicians and pundits are ignorant of what is going on. The story (from the CBC website):
"NATO confident Afghan mission can deal with renewed violence
23:04:18 EDT Jun 8, 2006
NATO is expanding its force from 9,700 to 16,000 by late July, doubling international troop numbers in the southern region, which was the Taliban's heartland.
The deployment of more troops into former Taliban strongholds in the south has been met by a wave of attacks, including suicide bombings against international forces, including 2,300 Canadians, and their Afghan allies...
The alliance hopes to complete its expansion across the whole of Afghanistan by November by taking on the eastern sector, bringing its total numbers in the country to up to 25,000, although Rumsfeld said the exact timing was not yet certain...
The United States has said it will take command of the NATO force in Afghanistan through 2007, replacing the current British general.
The Pentagon said the United States has at least 21,000 troops in Afghanistan but there has been talk of a cut of as much as 20 per cent. Many of those who remain will be incorporated into the NATO force as it moves south and east. However, the United States will also maintain a combat force independent of NATO to hunt down Taliban and al-Qaida militants..."
Lots of international coverage though:
LA Times: "Afghan Attacks Won't Deter NATO"
NY Times: "NATO Moves to Tighten Grip in Afghanistan"
Guardian: "Nato sanctions eight missions around world "
Le Figaro: "L'Otan double ses effectifs en Afghanistan"

Maybe anyone who buys ammonium nitrate, in whatever quantity, has to be entered onto a list which is then passed onto "the authorities," though this might be cumbersome; I have no idea how many bags of this stuff is sold.
DEFINITELY, if a guy not looking the least bit like a farmer and whose name could conceivably be Mohammed needs to be reported...just thinking out loud.
And, by all means, report any crazy-talking Muslim fundamentalist fanatics you encounter.
My husband did a few years ago. He'd gone into a convenience store near our house and was there longer than he should have been. I was wondering when to call the cops, when he finally got home with the milk.
What had taken him so long? Well, apparently, the proprietor of the store engaged him in a lengthy theological conversation (which my husband with a degree in theology was more than up to) which went on for over an hour. My husband said that the guy, though interesting and fuelled by the power of his convictions, was a total fanatic. This happened a month or so before 9/11.
A few months after the attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, my husband was back in the convenience store, where he again had a long talk with the Islamist fanatic nutbar.
When he got home, he was really concerned about the guy and his ideas and we had a long conversation about what to do about it. We decided that he should detail his concerns in a letter and send it to whatever authorities seemed appropriate. I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think there were numbers and/or addresses people were being encouraged to contact if they detected anything awry or amiss along the lines of terrorists in our midst.
My husband sent the letter off, sans return address and not signed, with the name of the convenience store and where it was located.
A few months later, the guy was no longer selling milk at the convenience store and my husband hasn't seen him again. Maybe he moved out of town on his own. And maybe he didn't.

I don't know, it seems the last thing we want is another registry that encumbers and stigmatizes law biding Canadians. We have just about got rid of the last billion dollar elephant that the Liberals dropped into our lives!
Certainly reporting suspicious purchases would be a step in the right direction. Perhaps the authorities have a plan in place.
I guess I was thinking about tips lines or terrorist watch sites where suspicious activity could be reported. I noticed prior to this arrest of the 17 there was a fair bit od chatter on the blogs about the terrorist training camp in Ontario- no not Liberal party headquarters, the other one!
Someone mentioned not funding anything that you are not 100% sure where the money is going. This seems logical.
Someone else mentioned putting Visa restrictions on Imans who spread hateful speech, I know this goes against all the "complete" free speech folks out there but if the Muslim community is being incited to rise up against first Jews, then...who is next?
It surely seems that it is a good idea to encourage Muslims whose faith has been hijacked by the extremists to take some responsibility in the matter and report violent, hate spreading Muslim extremists. These people have the best chance of knowing these individuals.
I don't know, it seems that there must be more we all can do to continue to make Cananda the best place to live in the world.

CS - your point is well taken. I'm skeptical only in that conspiracy theories can get really stupid.
I really felt that McVeigh was a classic paranoid schizophrenic like what-his-face, the Unabomber. They are loners by definition. I don't by DSM(mental health) standards think paranoia drives your basic jihadi. The Koran does. McVeigh's grievance was Ruby Ridge and Waco. He fit the profile of the anti-federal government crazy rogue milita groups. Nichols was spared the death penalty for cooperating. I just can't imagine that the Feds didn't milk him for all he was worth. Why hide a ME connection if there was one? Cancel that thought. Clinton was in office then!
I still don't put much into a connect with the jihadis.
Posted by: penny at June 9, 2006 6:06 PMDaniel you raise some valid concerns I think. Post 9-11 and even before, I have heard mention of signs of suicide bombers etc. such as; they often purchase one-way tickets and have no luggage to check in. I ask my self what if they get smart and buy a return ticket? Or what if it is a short domestic flight? It was reported that one of the 17, recently arrested in Canada was enrolled in flight school but quit because he didn't want to draw attention.
I know they seem lazy in their habits and maybe even stupid, but I wonder if that is just an act. They do seem to be gaining experience and are intent on the element of cat and mouse. They also seem to be good at using us against ourselves. Using the system. Using political parties to fundraise & lobby. Unions to boycott your enemy. Using private enterprisers to rent land for terrorist camps, biker gangs to peddle drugs, flight schools to train pilots. Canadians against Americans, East against West.
It is definately difficult to see reason in the unreasonable. I think as a nation we need to insist our Courts apply the law, and encourage their peers to set the example and/or to rat them out. Financial rewards?

Carey calls for a multi-faith coronation (Prince Charlie's trial balloon?)
TimesOnline (UK) ^ | 6/4/2006 | Christopher Morgan
Posted on 06/09/2006 3:20:14 PM PDT by Dark Skies
LORD CAREY, the former Archbishop of Canterbury, has surprised senior clerics by calling for a “multi-faith” coronation when the Prince of Wales succeeds to the throne.
Carey is to argue for a revision of the Christian oath taken by the monarch and for changes to the exclusively Anglican coronation service.
He makes his appeal in a television documentary to be broadcast on Five later this month. It puts him at odds with Rowan Williams, his successor, — and with most Anglican bishops.
In Carey’s broadcast, he will say: “When the time comes for the next coronation, there will have to be very significant changes. The Queen came to the throne at a time when there were no Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus . . . in the life of the country and now it’s a completely different world so the coronation oath will have to be looked at more critically.”
A number of Carey’s former bishops disagree. Last week, Michael Nazir-Ali, Bishop of Rochester, maintained such a proposal was untenable. “You can’t defend every faith, because there are very serious differences among them,” he said.

SOMALIA: Islamic militia tighten grip on warlords' strongholds
The Scotsman ^ | June 10, 2006 | MOHAMED ALI BILE

ISLAMIC militia who this week took control of Mogadishu, the Somali capital, advanced towards the last stronghold of secular warlords in Jowhar further north and on the capital's enemy clan districts yesterday.
As the rivals squared up, at least five people died in a clash in the town of Baidoa between local militiamen and bodyguards of the president, Abdullahi Yusuf, an interim government spokesman said.
Local journalists said as many as ten died. Mr Yusuf was not present during the clash in Baidoa, base of the interim government, but a local elder died. Militia loyal to sharia courts seized control of Mogadishu on Monday after driving out secular warlords believed to be backed by the United States. The defeat was seen by many as a major setback for Washington's policy.
Residents said the Islamicforces advanced overnight closer to their enemies' last stronghold of Jowhar, 55 miles north of the capital, after temporarily pulling back yesterday.
"Our forces have moved towards the warlord forces. I cannot confirm exactly where they are but I know they moved during the night," said Siyad Mohamed, leader of a militia allied to Mogadishu's sharia courts.
The Jowhar warlords, reinforced by allies defeated in Mogadishu and Balad, pushed south from the town yesterday to the village of Qalimoy.
Abdi Warsame, a local farmer, said: "The [warlord] coalition took weapons and militia from the town to strengthen their defence in Qalimoy after word came that the Islamic courts were advancing to Jowhar. Fear has engulfed the town. Sounds of anti-aircraft missiles are heard from the direction of Qalimoy. I think it was the coalition militia testing weapons to send a signal to advancing courts' militia." ...

OPP officers ignored assault, camera operators complain
Jun. 9, 2006. 06:50 PM
CANADIAN PRESS
CALEDONIA, Ont. — Two news cameramen were assaulted by protesters today, prompting Premier Dalton McGuinty to condemn the latest violence at the site of an aboriginal occupation in Caledonia, Ont.
The CH TV camera operators, one of whom needed stitches to close a head wound, said Ontario Provincial Police did nothing despite their pleas for help.
"The police were right behind me and I asked for protection," said Ken MacKay, a CH TV camera operator.
"I said, `I'm being assaulted, I need protection, they're trying to steal my camera' and nothing happened.
"(The attackers) wrestled the camera away from me and took it and left me, and they got the tape out."
Police said they were investigating the assault at the location near Hamilton, where aboriginal protesters took over a building site in February.
In Edmonton where he was meeting with the country's premiers, McGuinty expressed dismay at the attack.
"It was with great disappointment that I learned of the violent incidents in Caledonia," he said in a statement.
"I would like to express sympathy and concern for those injured."
McGuinty also condemned the violence "by an irresponsible few" and called it "a repugnant attempt to derail the important progress we are making."
The camera operators were filming as part of ongoing coverage of the aboriginal occupation, which started in February when Six Nations members took over a housing construction site.
They say they were videotaping an altercation involving an older couple when the aboriginal protesters came running past police to attack them.
Const. Keith Robb confirmed police were investigating the allegations that officers didn't intervene.
McGuinty said the province and federal governments want a peaceful solution to the standoff, which is why they've appointed officials to work with the Six Nations community.
"It is our responsibility as leaders, neighbours, friends and community members to resolve this matter peacefully through dedication, perseverance and goodwill," he said.
"That requires calm, understanding and respect from everyone involved."
Debbie Walker, a managing producer at the TV station, said she was "appalled" by the incident.
