Reader Tips

As you may have noticed, a busy day means I don't have a lot of time for blogging, so here's an invitation to share your tips with the rest of the crew. A few that were sent in recent days -

For 30 years, since the Whitlam government, that dream was that Aborigines were different to anyone else.

They had a "mystical" bond to the land that should not be broken. They should be kept in the remote bush, no matter the cost. White society was too racist and corrupt for them, anyway. The tribal ways were best. The foolish NT Government even started teaching the young in tribal languages rather than English.

What should have been clear was that you'd drive anyone feral if you kept them in a remote place with no work, no future, no excitement, no responsibility, no hope of escape and no need to even get out of bed, let alone go to school.

Add free welfare, cheap beer, big-city porn, drugs and plenty of poor-me excuses, and you would get the devastation we see right now.

Looking back at the media's obsession with climate coolingwarmingdryingwetting change. (I'll make a bold prediction - now that nearly everything has been used up, the next environmental warning bell to ring will be over "climate stagnation".)

Andrew Coyne has thoughts on Kyoto. I suggest you skip those, and scroll down to read what Mark Collins has to say at the 3:36PM mark in the comments.

Victor Davis Hanson on the quagmire that is California.

You're on your own for a while. I have a bunch of overdue portraits challenging me to get started on them. One is of a member of the US military (pictured in a Blackhawk) who was three times the soldier this guy claimed to be.

"in a remote place with no work, no future, no excitement, no responsibility, no hope of escape and no need to even get out of bed, let alone go to school."

I live Right by the Bigstone Cree Nation, and about the only TERM that is remotely accurate in the above sentence, is "remote place"...

Here is my version of KYOTO for the simple-minded.Your backyard is a mess because you have a demanding job and little time to clean it up.Your neighbour has a very nice backyard because he does little and has lots of time to keep it pretty.Every year you cut your neighbour a cheque for a few thousand. Results;your backyard is still a mess and your bank account is a little smaller, your neighbour's backyard is still pretty but his bank account is a little bigger. You think that deal stinks and decide to pull out.Your neighbour loves the deal and says you are against a clean neighbourhood. Now really, would it not be better to spend a few thousand on cleaning up your backyard rather than giving it to your neighbour?

Harper: Media Bias... Says he will avoid them. http://www.nealenews.com/

Posted by: blueright at May 24, 2006 7:06 PM

This is a partial transcript of questions and answers in an interview with Prime Minister Stephen Harper by A-Channel London in London, Ont., on Wednesday.

Question: "How (do) you consider the allegations from the national media, that you're trying to hide from them and decide who gets to ask you questions?"

Harper: "There's really not much I can say about that. Unfortunately, the press gallery has taken the view they are going to be the opposition to the government and they don't ask questions at my press conferences now. So we'll just get the message out on the road. There's lots of media in the country that do want to ask me questions and do want to hear what the government is doing for Canadians, or to Canadians. So we'll get our message out however we can."

Question: "Is it not a distraction?"

Harper: "Well, it's certainly unnecessary and I have trouble believing that, frankly, a Liberal prime minister would have this problem. But you know, that's as I say, the press gallery at the leadership level has taken an anti-Conservative view. Unfortunately, most journalists would like to ask questions and the press gallery is forbidding them from doing so. I think that's unfortunate. I think actually that speaks to freedom of the press, but that's an issue they're going to have to work out."

NOW - watch how these comments are already being spun by the so-called honest unbiased mainstream media who claim they just "report the news".

Did anyone catch Newman today, I was out and got the last 3 minutes of Jim Travers crying about something, and Newman saying something about Harper not being covered during the next election. He is wrong, Harper will be covered, and it will not be nice. Could be the end of many talking heads and pencil pushers.

Of course we'll get the Stephen Harper is not "Prime Ministerial" meme; and other assorted slights to his character.

Remember the 'not fit for office' dribble trotted out by the LIEBerals and duly proclaimed in the MSM.

Oh the MSM will cover PM Stephen Harper they just won't be flattering. But then were they ever?

PMSH will get his message out in many and diverse ways; it may just require a more hands on and personal touch.

So far poll numbers would indicate he is connecting with the public if not the disjointed Parliamentary Press Gallery (PPG).

In the internet age, the PPG is just not as vital as they continue to imagine themselves. Let them preen themselves with "Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?"
The current dust up is just a reflection of their own waning importance and insecurity for days of old.

Wakey, wakey PPG, Prince Stephen is not going to kiss you awake!!!

"Remember the 'not fit for office' dribble trotted out by the LIEBerals and duly proclaimed in the MSM."

Um, no. We kept reciting it, and subsequent events have proven us at least halfway right, but the "MSM"? Don't think so. Please provide examples.

"Oh the MSM will cover PM Stephen Harper they just won't be flattering. But then were they ever?"

Yes - the last election. Fawning over every photo op, ignoring gaffes, regurgitating Conservative talking points, regurgitating Conservative criticisms of the Liberals.

Yup,same old,same old.
Right...left,right...left,I feel like Im standing in the middle of a parade ground here.Does anybody think for themselves without running things through a partisan filter first?
Personally,I don't HATE the"left",but I can proudly say I f*cking DETEST the Liberal Party of Canada.
My intent here is not to lob insults at someone who defines themselves as a leftie(or rightie for that matter)to each his/her own.BUT,how any clear thinking individual can support this PARTY after the endless list of corruption,lies,hate-mongering,and lets not forget, incompetent government.
If you feel inclined to AGAIN push a leftist agenda at this country, fine, then get behind the NDP,or form a new party. To stand up and actually defend this"disgraceful dynasty" to our country while trying to torpedo a new PM who is still learning the job(strictly because of his party),well,to put the party ahead of the country is a well-established Liberal trait isn't it?
I have not forgotten those last few painful years with Mulroney's arrogance. It pales though in comparison to the UNMATCHED abuse of Canada performed by Chretien/Martin.
To IGNORE the LPC's recent history is to define IGNORANCE!

Posted by: Canadian Observer at May 24, 2006 11:57 PM

Well said, Can. Observer! People should feel nauseous as they mark that X beside a Liberal candidate's name. And many of the candidates should be ashamed of themselves for that disgusting, hate-filled campaign they put on in January. It was thoroughly shameful and nothing to be proud of.

Think, please. Harper on one hand,Chretien and/or Martin on the other.Who would you rather have look after your assets?

Posted by: wallyj at May 25, 2006 1:11 AM

Canadian Observer- Right on!
I hope Ted is still around to read your comment. I feel the same way. I find it incredulous that the Liberal Party of Canada still enjoys the strength it does in the polls after all the corruption that has been evident over the past few years. Do Liberals actually vote with their noses plugged and their eyes closed?
I think there are many in the LPC that are hoping that Iggy (the "sudden" Canadian) will have no baggage and will be able to be the white Knight to save the party from itself. The problem with that is...it is still the Liberal Party of Canada. It is still filled with the same bunch of corrupt $#%@**%$#'s that stole the taxpayers money in the first place. There has been no purge. No demand of accountability. No remorse or outrage at the theft and mismanagement by the rank and file. Ignatief, if he wins, which is doubtful now that he has had to declare on Afghanistan, will still just end up being the latest pawn in the backroom boys game. I don't see him having the courage to do what needs to be done in the Liberal party, namely clean house! I appreciated Ted's comments in this regard on another thread acknowlwedging the need for a house cleaning. I wonder how wide spread this sentiment is amongst influential Liberals. I am sure not hearing any appetite for a purge and yet I think that is what it may take to gain any amount of credibility. Otherwise, as you suggest, decertify and start a new party.
For all the Liberal Party supporters who may read this:
"Fool me once, shame on you...Fool me twice, shame on me!"

Why America won't get involved in Iran (and a good explanation of the absurd propaganda that the National Post just published):

"Groups to Bush: Drop Iran-Israel Linkage

WASHINGTON — Jewish community leaders have urged the White House to refrain from publicly pledging to defend Israel against possible Iranian hostilities, senior Jewish activists told the Forward.
...
"We are basically telling the president: We appreciate it, we welcome it. But, hey, because there is this debate on Iraq, where people are trying to put the blame on us, maybe you shouldn't say it that often or that loud," said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "Within the Jewish community there is a real sense of 'thank you but no thank you.'"
...
Jewish activists are concerned that "there would be [a scenario] just like with Iraq: the idea that somehow the Jewish community and the neoconservatives have dragged the United States into a conflict with Iran," said Martin Raffel, associate executive director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, a policy coordinating organization that brings together 13 national Jewish agencies and 123 local Jewish communities. "And if things go badly and our people are killed, then who is to blame?"

Iran-Israel Linkage By Bush Seen As Threat

President Bush’s repeated focus on Israel as a reason to confront Iran could spark public fury against the Jewish state and Jews if U.S. military action is accompanied by skyrocketing gas prices or terrorism at home, some say. Getty Images

President Bush is risking a backlash that could injure the Jewish community — and his own cause — by repeatedly citing Israel as his top rationale for possible U.S. military conflict with Iran, Jewish leaders and Middle East analysts warned this week.

Bush’s repeated, sometimes exclusive, focus on Israel could spark public fury against the Jewish state and Jews if U.S. military action is accompanied by skyrocketing gas prices, terrorism at home or fallen G.I.’s who might be seen as dying for Israel, some said. Others feared it could fracture the shaky international coalition Bush is striving to assemble to oppose Iran’s nuclear program by framing the threat as primarily to Israel rather than international stability.

Canadian Sentinel you've hit the bonanza. The left vs right charade is futile. The fool's fodder. Openeness and accountability can easily emerge with ALL questions answered in straight forward fashion - by whomever asks them, including the Ottawa press gallery. Failure to answer questions directly is sure sign of a 'hidden agenda' the people won't buy. Such as a war economy for next 20 years to replace current illegitimate, now tanking into global depression economy. Result of unethical business practices across all sectors (real estate, banking, corporate and industrial, military contractors, etc.) Where is the moral authority to govern? In Harper's favour he did not listen to the ASSOC. of CANADIAN CEOs with regard to the GST cut. He returned the one percent to the people, Canadian CEOs recommended he apply it to social programs. In 21st century they have failed to address minimum/border wage inadequacies as their priority is their profit margins. At their own peril they downgrade purchasing power and viability of realtime wages. Rising dollar means 100,000 Ontario manufacturing jobs lost. It's not pretty folks. We're looking at a 1982 recession all over again. Why? Corporate greed.

Liberals on the other hand have 'one asset' at moment and that is Bob Rae who if he divests himself from Chretien connections and influence and Liberal corruption can lead this country in future. People should look at the possibility of a real statesman here combining morality, intelligence and open communication skills. In my books, he's Canada's best hope to turn things adequately around before we're all flat out on our ass.

Tommy: Sorry to say it, but what rock have you just crawled out from under:

Bob Rae, "a real statesman...combining morality, intelligence and open communication skills"??

Bob Rae, divesting "himself from Chretien connections and influence and Liberal corruption..."??

How do you propose he's going to do that? His brother was a HUGE operator in the PMO's office for years. Is Rae going to move out of his "entitled" lifestyle to live with the wo/man on the street in order to divest himself of the taint of his Librano connections and of being a Rosedale (maybe Forest Hill) socialist?

Is Rae going to insist that the Librano$ pay back all of the money they stole from the hardworking and overtaxed Canadian people? If he planned to do that we might be talking "morality" and "intelligence."

But until that metamorphosis takes place, he's mired in the same smelly pig pen that all of the other leadership hopefuls are.

Soowee...

Canada's 'world-class' public healthcare system:

Tom Garrett, an 18-year-old leukemia patient, flies to Calgary every 16 days to receive a medical treatment no hospital in Ontario can provide — even though the machine needed for his photoimmune therapy lies collecting dust in Toronto.

It costs the Ontario government $1,600 for each photopheresis treatment for Garrett in Calgary's Foothills Medical Centre, and he's had about 30 so far. And in 2004-05, the Ontario health ministry spent more than $1.6 million to send eight people to the United States for the same treatment at an average cost of $201,715 per patient....

Florida: St. Cloud hires smokers again
United Pro Smoker's Newsletter ^ | May 24, 2006 | Linda Florea

Posted on 05/25/2006 6:03:57 AM PDT by SheLion

ST. CLOUD -- What seemed to many like a good idea several years ago has gone up in smoke. St. Cloud's ban on hiring employees who use tobacco, which was enacted in 2002, has been revoked by the City Council.

"Number one, it never did do what it was supposed to do -- help on insurance," City Manager Tom Hurt said. "And it put a cramp on hiring."

With more jobs to fill as the city grows, there was a shrinking pool of workers to fill the jobs. Osceola's unemployment rate for the 12 months ending in April was 2.6 percent, substantially lower than the national average of 4.5 percent.

"We had certified operators that wanted to work for us, and then they found out they had to be a nonsmoker for a year," said Robert MacKichan, public works director. His department employs about 100 workers and has 12 to 15 vacancies, he said.

At one point, the city loosened its policy by agreeing to hire smokers if they promised to stop.

"No one wants to take a job on the pretense they will be able to stop, not knowing if they will. In a year, if they're not smoke-free, they're [fired]," MacKichan, said

St. Cloud, which took the action about two weeks ago, is not the only city in Florida that has changed its policy on tobacco.

In 1990 North Miami became the first city in the country to enact the tobacco-user hiring ban, but it rescinded the policy in 2003. ...

Millions flowed in all directions at start of sponsorship program, trial told
Wed May 24, 11:36 AM EST

MONTREAL (CP) - Various federal government departments poured millions of dollars into the sponsorship program in its early stages, Chuck Guite's fraud trial was told Wednesday.

Through pointed questions to his former assistant, Huguette Tremblay, Guite portrayed a program operating far outside government norms in 1995 and 1996.

Tremblay said highly irregular year-end transfers from other government departments as diverse as Heritage and Health contributed millions to sponsorship coffers.

Much of the money was spent before Guite's branch of Public Works had even received it, Tremblay said.

"We did not worry about lack of funds," Guite said, to agreement from Tremblay.

"If we did not have them, other departments would transfer them to us," Guite added, to another nod from Tremblay. ...

Massive Misreporting in the Media Ignored
StrategyPage ^ | May 25, 2006 | Harold C. Hutchison

Posted on 05/25/2006 6:40:50 AM PDT by Cannoneer No. 4

A number of stories have been unreported on – or misreported – in the war of terror. The mainstream media is willing to discuss the car bombs. But which of these stories have been the most damaging in terms of not getting out?

@ The memos from Saddam's regime. These memos, often ignored by major mass media outlets (unless targeted for derision), have generally shown the terrorist connections that Saddam's regime had, and showed that the regime was also interested in acquiring weapons of mass destruction. Far from lying, the Bush Administration had largely been spot on.

@ Guantanamo Bay and the detainees. Instead of focusing on how the United States was trying to handle prisoners in a new type of war, the media focused on scandals, most of which (the Koran flushing and torture at Guantanamo Bay claims) had little, if no, basis in reality. The one that did, was used to flog the military constantly.

@ The American efforts in the Horn of Africa. This is a theater of the war on terror where few shots are fired by American forces, but where a small number of American troops have carried out a major strategic offensive that has been largely successful.

@ The intelligence efforts that have meant no large-scale attacks have hit the United States since September 11, 2001. Efforts like NSA surveillance have often been attacked, often for political gain, without regard for the damage done. These efforts also have made it possible to fight the war without taking extreme measures that could have infringed upon civil liberties.

@ Contributions of various allies to the war on terror. The notion of unilateralism is not only untrue, but by not highlighting these contributions, it set the stage for the United Arab Emirates to be given very short shrift during a fear-mongering campaign in recent months.

@ Al Qaeda's media-based strategy has also been ignored. A better understanding among the American people of what al Qaeda is trying to do would help them understand the events. Instead, the mainstream media is playing along with al Qaeda's strategy.

@ The true level of progress in Iraq has also been ignored. Rather than the entirely gloomy picture the mainstream media has portrayed, what has happened is that al Qaeda has largely been defeated in Iraq. Three elections have been held, and have resulted in the second real democracy in the Middle East.

@ Afghanistan is also a subject of misreporting. In one recent case of misreporting, the media recently focused on headlines indicating a hundred dead. The details were hidden – 87 of the 100 killed were Taliban fighters who were killed in a series of attacks, the other 13 were Afghan police. ...

Just read the California Link. It's a sad day when you start wondering if your family would be safer in war-torn Iraq VS your bought and paid for, windows barred, doors locked, criminals hiding in your bushes, California dream home.

A friend of ours visited Thailand this spring and reports there is very little crime there. Vendors actually are able to leave their goods out in the open overnight and no-one casts a sideways glance. He also reports there are few gangs/drugs in evidence. According to the locals, when a "problem" starts to get out of hand, it's looked after quietly, by police, never to be seen again.

Internal Hospital Memo Provides Evidence of Sex-Selective Abortion in Canada
Male Female Ratio Skewed In Predominantly Chinese and Indian Communities

By John-Henry Westen

VANCOUVER, May 24, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Western Standard magazine, one of the few conservative publications in Canada, has acquired an internal document from Women's Hospital in Vancouver which shows that abortions are carried out at taxpayer expense when the reason is merely that the parents are not satisfied with the sex of the child. The cover story of the June issue of the magazine, which is arriving in mailboxes this week and is set to hit newsstands next week, reports moreover that similar to countries where sex-selective abortions are rampant, the birth ratio in certain communities in Canada with large Indian and Chinese populations is becoming increasingly skewed against girls.

The Western Standard's Andrea Mrozek and Sean Ollech have put together a piece of investigative journalism that is sure to rock the foundations of feminist ideology in Canada. ...

Kalifornia?
I've often discussed the relative rate of crime and injury or death between War Zones and General regions of the US...or other places.

A little stats searching through government or interest group websites usually confirms that soldiers ( US Soldiers ) are safer in the field of combat than ordinary citizens are at home.
Biased and self serving MSM reporting makes the most out of each and every incident without any balancing information and that is what the anti-war bunch love to cling to ( delusion ). Facts that do not support the position of the moonbats are avoided at all costs (denial).

If I recall correctly the average rate of death per 100,000 in the USA is in the high 7's while the same rate for service personnel in Iraq is in the high7's.

I'd rather be a properly equipped soldier in combat than an unarmed civilian in gangland.

That is the same biased and self-serving "MSM" that regurgitates the conservative fear-mongering of rising crime and violence when, in fact, most crime and most violent crime categories are going down.

The truth about global warming - it's the Sun that's to blame

The Telegraph News - 18/07/2004

Global warming has finally been explained: the Earth is getting hotter because the Sun is burning more brightly than at any time during the past 1,000 years, according to new research.

A study by Swiss and German scientists suggests that increasing radiation from the sun is responsible for recent global climate changes.

Dr Sami Solanki, the director of the renowned Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in Gottingen, Germany, who led the research, said: "The Sun has been at its strongest over the past 60 years and may now be affecting global temperatures.

"The Sun is in a changed state. It is brighter than it was a few hundred years ago and this brightening started relatively recently - in the last 100 to 150 years."

Dr Solanki said that the brighter Sun and higher levels of "greenhouse gases", such as carbon dioxide, both contributed to the change in the Earth's temperature but it was impossible to say which had the greater impact. ...

Independent denies Tory overtures

Published: Thursday, May 25, 2006
MONTREAL - Independent Quebec MP Andre Arthur denies reports he is being wooed by the Conservative government to join its ranks, despite openly expressing his admiration for the administration.
...

The story got picked up by La Presse, forcing Mr. Arthur to spend much of yesterday denying the report.

The speculation made some sense. Mr. Arthur is a federalist and leans to the right in his views. Since taking the job, he has supported the government's budget, its approach to the Kyoto Accord and its decision to renew Canada's commitment to the war in Afghanistan for two more years.

But it was his praise of Mr. Harper that fuelled speculation.

"I must say that I'm quite impressed with the kind of government they've given Canada for the last months," he told the Hill Times. "Here's a guy, Harper, who does what he says and says what he does. That's a long time in Canada since we've seen that. It's marvellously refreshing. It gives confidence to voters."

He said it is a far cry from the corrupt bunch who were running the country before the Tories took power. ...

Palestinian Civil War - AP Euphemism Watch

You can feel the Associated Press struggling and straining to come up with new euphemisms in this one: Officer killed in Palestinian fighting.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A gunfight between a Palestinian security force and a Hamas militia Thursday killed one police officer and wounded four others in the latest outbreak of internal Palestinian fighting, doctors and witnesses said. The death brought to at least 10 the number of people killed in internal violence over the past month.

Both Hamas and the security force accused each other of sparking the shootout.

The fight in Gaza City occurred when a group of police riding in a car on their way back from the funeral of a top security commander clashed with the new militia, security officials said. Hamas militiamen said they were attacked by a group of gunmen at their post in the middle of the city. ... via LGF

Good opening Post Kate.Very god observations as well. Thanks for the time you took to post it.

As a City parks worker ( I work in the inner city core). I see the realities of what becoming a government ward makes of an individual. The anger & bitterness that becomes a wall to any lifting them up out of the morass of state control.Planted & enabled by this same group of social busybodies. They harm more than help.

The third rate citiznship because of "special entitlements. Have caged them & made for nothing but a chip on certain shoulders. An excuse to do nothing with there lives . Because the liberals & others have convinced them there victims.I would be rich from every time I was told, we stole there land. The fact my people have been here since 1745 , escapes them. I am no more Europian than they are. Except for skin tone.

By doing this they keep them down. Give them enough money to carry on with destructie habits. Teach them no life skills they would need in a city. Than the Poverty Industry moves in to soak up any monies not swollowed by the Burocrates at Indian affairs.

Entitlements & the Mythologies invented to give this group some self respect has back fired. The realities of there lives more than testify to the fact a lot of it is a bunch of huey.

The fact there own leadership in some cases, is more rapicious than the left is a scandle. Some chiefs are even use force, or the treat of money for control.

If you really look at our institutions, our way of fighting or even using dream catchers in our cars. Bespeaks to me that at least a third of both the US & Canada is Native in outlook & culture. Which we call North America. Its even higher in South America. Assimulation goes both ways. Even if you win.

We came very very close to losing our freedoms in the same way. We have to stop looking at Governmet as the end all be all. Just my thoughts on it.

Its time Native sbecome part of the mainstream, like Jews, Italians, Norskis, Ukranians et all. Keep the culture & give those on reservations individual land to do with as they please. The fact that South Africa based there townships on our reaervation system makes me ill.

It does prove the intent though behind these measures.
Just an opinion.

Bernard Ostry, 78: TVOntario head
Public servant went on to head TVO

STAFF REPORTER

Bernard Ostry, one of the most creative public servants of his generation, died of cancer yesterday at 78.

Stylish, intellectual and visionary, he helped shape the country's cultural infrastructure as a government mandarin in Ottawa and Toronto, and late in his career as head of TVOntario.

His recent gifts to the Royal Ontario Museum and the University of Toronto's Massey College stand to enrich the city's cultural life for years to come.

High Style: The Ostry Collection at the ROM was published last fall to catalogue the rich art deco and art nouveau furniture collection Ostry and his wife Sylvia donated to the museum.

"The Ostry collection was really what justified us being able to create an all-new gallery on 20th-century design," ROM director William Thorsell said yesterday of a space to open next year.

Massey College established the Bernard Ostry Foundation 1 1/2 years ago with $500,000 from paintings Ostry sold at auction.

"The first big Bernard Ostry project," said college master John Fraser, "is to sponsor free concerts for a year by young Canadian artists from all over the country."

Ostry, the youngest of three sons, was born in Wadena, Sask. The family moved to Winnipeg and Flin Flon, Man., where his father, a Russian immigrant, worked as a shopkeeper.

At high school in Winnipeg, Ostry met his future wife, Sylvia Knelman. They both studied at the University of Manitoba, did post-graduate work in England and took up senior public-service posts in Ottawa.

In 1970, Ostry became assistant under-secretary of state, credited as chief architect of a number of multicultural programs under then prime minister Pierre Trudeau. ...

Hundreds of millions promised to provinces for climate change redirected
By DENNIS BUECKERT
Ottawa (CP)

Excerpt:

A spokesman for Environment Minister Rona Ambrose indicated Thursday the Conservatives don't feel bound by the previous government's Kyoto-related agreements.

The Liberals had promised $538 million to Ontario and $328 million to Quebec for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Memorandums of understanding had also been reached with Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.

"Obviously with the new government things are being restructured in terms of funding for the provinces," Ambrose's press secretary Ryan Sparrow said in an interview.

There will be money for the provinces under a new clean air initiative being developed, but the amounts have not been determined, he said.

"We have a made-in-Canada plan and money will be designated to certain projects based on our made-in-Canada plan.

"The final structure has not been finalized so we can't comment on the specific dollar figures in terms of how it's going to be played out so in terms of what each province is getting, we can't comment at this time."

A spokeswoman for Ontario [Liberal] Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Marie Bountrogianni said Ontario expects its agreement with the previous government to be honoured. ... via cnews

London Times ^ | 25-05-2006 | BY RUTH GLEDHILL, RELIGION CORRESPONDENT
A GROUP of trainee Methodist ministers has been barred from Britain by the Home Office under laws passed 12 years ago to prevent unqualified religious leaders entering the country. Every year, the Methodist Church in the US sends 14 probationer ministers to this country for a year, and they have never been turned away before. But for the first time this year, the Immigration and Nationality Directorate has ruled that the 14 trainees fall foul of legislation passed in 1994 under which ministers who are not ordained cannot get a work visa. ...

E-Commerce in Crisis: When SSL Isn't Safe
================================

May 25, 2006 11:31AM

*It's not a problem of authentication but one of transactional authorization,* says Bruce Schneier, leading security expert and CTO of Counterpane Internet Security. *No matter how hard you make the initial authentication for the end-user or hacker, the malware can just wait until the authentication is done and then manipulate the transaction.*

Robbing a brick-and-mortar bank seems like petty theft compared with a new breed of cybercrime that, according to a growing number of security experts, is siphoning untold millions of dollars from banks and their customers using SSL-evading Trojans and ever more refined phishing techniques.

Yet as phishing gets slicker, users are getting smarter. As the average Joe becomes less likely to type in authentication information in response to an e-mail, more and more cybercriminals are turning to SSL-evading Trojans.

These Trojans install themselves on unsuspecting users' PCs and either capture user log-on credentials or manipulate transactions after a successful log-on.

In both cases, the SSL connection between PC and bank remains intact. The user may think the confidential online transaction is protected against mischief -- but it is not. (continued...) [From the pros... not just this foggy dude.] TG
