"Jefferson, who represents New Orleans"

Busted:

A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.

At one audiotaped meeting, Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., chuckles about writing in code to keep secret what the government contends was his corrupt role in getting his children a cut of a communications company's deal for work in Africa.

As Jefferson and the informant passed notes about what percentage the lawmaker's family might receive, the congressman "began laughing and said, 'All these damn notes we're writing to each other as if we're talking, as if the FBI is watching,'" according to the affidavit.

Jefferson, who represents New Orleans, has not been charged and denies any wrongdoing.

As for the $100,000, the government says Jefferson got the money in a leather briefcase last July 30 at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Arlington. The plan was for the lawmaker to use the cash to bribe a high-ranking Nigerian official _ the name is blacked out in the court document _ to ensure the success of a business deal in that country, the affidavit said.

Glenn Reynolds has a good memory;
Some readers may recall that Jefferson also used the National Guard to secure his home in New Orleans during the Katrina aftermath. Another triumph for Louisiana politics! However, the bribery story puts a new spin on this bit from the story about Jefferson's urgent visit to his home amid the flood: "Finally, according to the source, Jefferson emerged with a laptop computer, three suitcases, and a box about the size of a small refrigerator, which the enlisted men loaded up into the truck." Hmm.

It's nice to see some politicians are being held accountable. There were several years when it looked like no one would have to account for anything. All the checks and balances were broken. It looks as if everyone is waking up in America, and none too soon.

Yes, Steve, for once I have to agree with you. During the Clinton years with lying under oath and perjury, the death of Ron Brown, and before that with Teddy Kennedy killing Mary Jo Kopechne when he left her in an upside down car at the bottom of a pond to slowly die in terror in an air pocket before sobering up, calling his lawyers, and finally contacting the police 10 hours later, I believed that no American politicians would be held accountable for anything.

But under the reforming leadership of George W. Bush, we have major big lead financial criminals like Ken Lay being punished and we have crooked politicians from both political parties finally being held accountable, arrested, and going to jail.

I'm glad you noticed this. I hope the same thing happens now that Stephen Harper is Prime Minister and that political criminals and thieves go to jail and that the sponsorship money (and gun registry money?) stolen/hidden from Parliament is recovered for the people of Canada.

Wouldn't that be wonderful?

That would be a very good and welcome change.
as Jean says, da proof is da proof... ect...

One has to admire the professionalism of the Americans.
While our Liberals pass bribes in paper bags, their Liberals use leather briefcases.
Class, pure class.

Amazing.

steved is busted.

He has no idea that D-La means DEMOCRAT from LOUISIANA, the land of Huey Long.

The DEMON-RATS with their hands in the cookie jar. Sound familiar Canada?

by the way steved, democrat means liberal (with a small l) and these days, due to their (and your) blind hatred of GWB, have been driven to the point of total insanity and babbling conspiracy theories.

Want to change you mind now?

My rule is simple. If they did the crime they should do the time. I don't care what their politics or social status is.
Now if they would just nail Bush for lying about the reasons for taking a country to war or breaking the FISA law I would feel a little more comfortable that future Presidents won't be so quick to break their oath to uphold the laws of their country.

If Nagin is re-elected as mayor of "Nawlins", they get what they deserve. It was ignorant to build a population center on a huge river delta, and it will be even more ignorant to do it twice. Especially if the population insists on electing idiots like Nagin.

Hey TomPenn, "It was ignorant to build a population center on a huge river delta, and it will be even more ignorant to do it twice."

A bit harse, but this is nature's way of cleaning the gene pool...then again, the Netherlands...

Steve D.,
You keep going on about how "Bush lied". Instead of regurgitating the "hysterical record" maybe you should take the time to actually examine the historical record. Here's a starting point. Read the whole thing before you bother to comment.

Bush may not be the best US president, however he does seem to be an honorable man, unlike Willam Jefferson of Louisiana or William Jefferson Clinton of Arkansas.

while most of the MSM was cheerleading Bush I was reading internet documents like the Downing Street Memo. The historical record on the American side is being buried as we speak. Secret you know. However, most of the world knew Bush was making up excuses to go to war. Now even most Americans know it too. Still, there is a shrinking minority who cling to Bush's every word like it reflected some modicum of truth. It doesn't.
Do you see the difference between lying about sex and lying that kills tens of thousands?
Do you see the difference between lying about sex and warrantless wiretapping?
If you don't then you belong to that shrinking group of true believers that will huddle with Bush in his bunker until the bitter end because loyalty to an ideology is more important than loyalty to truth.
So now I will go, one more time, to a website that will tell me the ideologically whitewashed side of the story. I will try very hard to overcome my prejudice when reading.

Hey Kate, why did you decide to post this story, when you have ignored the corruption of several Republican politicians, including Duke Cunningham and Tom Delay. Interesting.

I went to opinionjournal and found a Wall Street article written by a man who invented neo-conservatism and was given the Medal of Freedom by George Bush(yes, just like George Tenet).
Yes, he gave a spirited, highly selective of the facts article. Cheney or Rumsfeld could have written it.
He leaves out facts and distorts others. But if you are looking to have a pro-war bias satisfied it will do that. Just don't come armed with too much knowledge of the complete truth of the matter because if you do it definitely spoils the read.

Who cares about New Orleans? We have our own problems that we're still struggling with.

Posted by: ok4ua at May 22, 2006 7:52 PM

Steve D.
Podhoretz had about as much to do with inventinq neo-conservativism as Gore had to do with inventing the internet.
And, if you take the colloquialisms into account, the Downing Street memos do not conflict with Podhoretz.
I guess the real question comes back to honour.
Mr. Jefferson used his office to line his pockets. Mr. Clinton was too busy using his office to "get lucky" rather than dealing with A-Q or Saddam or the Mad Mullahs of Tehran or Kim or Quaddafi or Assad.
Mr. Bush was forced to deal with A-Q, and, added Saddam to the deal (possibly based on intelligence assessments from multiple sources). End result?
Saddam down.
Assad backing down.
Quaddafi backing down.
A-Q on the run.
And your point would be...?

The Downing Street Memo? What a great blast from the past. Next week we can all review the Grassy Knoll, Area 51 and Paul Bunyan.

Has America ever taken up a collection for one of our floods or disasters? Ask yourself that question? Not likely in this lifetime. As far as a govenor for Louisiana. All American Politicians are crooked, some more so than others.
