That craaaaazy Harper, handing out fake press releases.
Doesn't he have a country to run or something?
Posted by: molarmauler at May 9, 2006 10:19 AMOh, dear. Looks like ol' Kate has to haul out her dictionary again and look up the definition of the word amateur.
You are not an amateur in any sense of the word, Kate. You are professional class. If you were 20% smarter, you might actually be a threat.
Posted by: Ti-Guy at May 9, 2006 10:30 AMThis reminds me of a remark Don Meredith made to Howard Cosell on "Monday Night Football" about 30 years ago.
Said Meredith,
"That's what I like about you ,Howard. You call 'em the way you see 'em. And if you don't like it the way you see it, you make it up."
Bi-guy,
You insult our host, Kate.
In doing so, you make yourself look angry, envious, petty ... silly.
Please continue making yourself look stupid, but don't insult our host.
Posted by: Duke at May 9, 2006 10:45 AMLuckily 50% of the population is dumber than average and wont read it.
10% of the remainder of the top 50% of the population is more liberal than average and will read it as true. So not much harm. I leave the reader to do the math on why the country has had liberal governments.
In the old days of journalistic integrety someone would resign over a poor headline like this. now its bragging rights.

Well... exactly as cal2 put it... except that he was polite. Most Canadians can't read anyway, so no harm, no foul.

Posted by: Fred at May 9, 2006 11:26 AMThe 'pros' at the Star can't count today either:
"However, according to a Canadian Press report, Conservative policy planners are examining the possibility of U.S.-style Senate elections, where voters cast ballots for certain senators on one six-year cycle, and other senators on a second six-year cycle."
They missed the third cycle... 1/3 are replaced every 2 years.
Posted by: anon at May 9, 2006 11:28 AMIts always a hoot to see how far down the Press Release most MSM reporters have to go to spot a fake. Many are simple parrots and rely on their editors to smell a rat. I've watched them running to the phones and while calling it in they get to the absurd points in the fake and suddenly their expression changes from excitement to shame. Gotcha!
Posted by: John Chittick at May 9, 2006 11:28 AMEveryone: limit your interaction with trolls. It's a rule of Kate's, in case some of y'all missed it. Ignoring them often makes them go away.
Kate will thank us to ignore the terrible trolls.
As to the subject of the post, well, fake press release or not, the substance is correct. The civil service is indeed corrupt (we've seen enough examples of broken rules, etc). We caught the Liberal gov't practicing racism and sexism in hiring when an email got out and exposed it... and the following day Scott "Kiss My Ass" Brison ordered an end to it, having been caught with his pants down... As for drunkenness, nothing's stopping civvies from having a few on lunch hour.
Oh, and there's rampant nepotism, that I know for sure, as I saw it for myself as a temp employee in the Feds once. It's astonishing and very common.
Posted by: Canadian Sentinel at May 9, 2006 11:32 AM50% of the population is dumber than average???
It takes a real rocket scientist to come up with such a stupid comment.
Granted a majority of Canadian voters are misinformed, thanks to our liberal media.
Perhaps most Canadian voters arejust lazy about politics. What else could explain ongoing Liberal governments.
Arrogant punsters can laugh at our American cousins, at least they don't show the same apathy towards politics as many superior and smug Canadians do.
As to people trashing our host. This is the typical so-called progressive forces at work. They have nothing to offer but venom.

Is PM Harper sending out fake press releases?
Please forward your source(s), references, URL's, & etc. for this outrageous, false headline.
Please prove your assertion; it is an assertion. Please prove same.
Thank you.
Sentinal,
I agree with your 'don't feed the tolls' but when they insult the host something must be said.
A personal attack and not just failed idiology and venom is not to be ignored.
Two such attacks on the host should be reason for premanent dismissal. Speaking freely, no matter how idiotic and vile is fine with me, but insulting our host is not.
Just my view on this matter.
Posted by: Duke at May 9, 2006 12:06 PMDear Proud K-W Conservative: I'm fairly certain that you missed the "tongue-in-cheekiness" of cal2's post. If you're average, 50% are smarter and 50% are dumber...that's sort of the definition (although cal2 perhaps should have said "median"). It was just cheekiness, not a dumb comment.
Posted by: Hassle at May 9, 2006 12:07 PM
And in regard to half of the Canadian poplulation being not too bright, I would say that it's more like 80% since over the past 25 years our educational system and doting parents have so lowered the bar.
The host will take care of herself. Please don't continue the troll thread, regardless of your impulse to defend me.
Posted by: Kate at May 9, 2006 12:09 PMI stand corrected.
Thank you to Duke for putting our collective ignorance in context. Our education system is truly sad. To see this all you have to do is spend time in the blogoshere and note the lack of writing skills
Posted by: Proud K-W Conservative at May 9, 2006 12:16 PMDuke,
Ignore them. Kate has asked us to. She is a big girl and can fend for herself. I am sure her index finger is always at the ready to zap the trolls as they pop up out of their holes. better for us to stay on topic... it honors the hosts wishes!
Speaking of the topic, I won't be surprised if some smear campaigns more sophisticated than this get started and fueled by the MSM. I am sure they won't let the facts stand in the way of a juicy story. Things have been kind a slow around the office with not much to report on... so if you can't report on the news, why not just make it up as you go along!
Daniel
What's all this "our host" stuff? It sounds a bit creepy, like there's an infestation of some kind. It's a bit body snatchersy. Kate, are you all right? Should I call pest control?
Posted by: Occam's Carbuncle at May 9, 2006 12:35 PMIf this came from the desk of the PMO, then it isn't a fake press release. If it did not come from the PMO, then Stephen Harper had nothing to do with it.
Rather Orwellian headline, in my opinion. Might have been better to say "Conservative Government Searches For Document Forger".
Posted by: Krydor at May 9, 2006 1:29 PMI have a vivid picture of Kate playing Whack-a-Troll - what fun!!!
Posted by: Alberta Girl at May 9, 2006 1:36 PMSilly, silly, silly....The left will do anything. Remember the fake email during the election campaign. Surely the sleazy media would not purport this type of stuff to be legitimate? On second thought.....
I don't know about the rest of you but the Newman show on the Communist Broadcasting Corporation and Mike Fluffy on CTV are becoming more boring as each day passes. Reporters interviewing reporters, spinners spinning themselves into the ground, Jack the used car salesman, having something to say about everything. I have taken to taping both shows. You would be surprised how quickly the shows go by when you simply skip or mute the stuff you're not interested in. It also keeps the blood pressure down. Try it, it works.
I love posting that statistic.
because by definition ,50% of the population is dumber than average. exactly , everytime, always.
tends to draw out the lower 50% into a debate though, everytime.
If you want to discuss averages , mean and mode or median. they all tend to cluster in a sample of 33million.
Posted by: cal2 at May 9, 2006 4:19 PMAw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, cal2. Forty
percent of all people know that.
Oscar Wildes quote on lies.
"lies, damn lies and statistics."
Lies - what the politicians promise.
Damn lies- what it appears as after the election.
Statistics - what the government sends the CBCpravda to show how well they have kept the promises they broke.
This is just like the Dan Rather/Bush Air National Guard documents scandal. Fake, but True meme.

Harper shakes up Liberal contest
May 9, 2006. 01:00 AM
JAMES TRAVERS
How well is Stephen Harper doing? Well enough to change the Liberal leadership contest.
A party that once held a headlock on power won't anoint another messiah until December in Montreal. But if current trend lines continue, Liberals would be wise to consider a short-term caretaker or a long-term builder rather than a champion for the next election.
In less than four months, political realities have shifted so dramatically that an early return to government is now a Liberal long shot. While much of the blame can be traced to scandal, voter fatigue and clan squabbles, it's also true the party's current troubles can be traced to the new Prime Minister. ... more

Oh oh, the great unwashed masses are starting to question the word according to the MSM. The rabble on the left are tossing insults " My father, mother, transgendered parental unit, test tube/turkey baster can beat you dad". Cal2 thinks that 54.40% of those asked didn't care about the plus/minus 3%, 19 times out of 20 but almost everyone hasn't a clue what happens during the 20th time out of 20.
Bottom line: I'd rather my kids become used car salesmen than journalists.
Posted by: texas canuck at May 9, 2006 6:54 PMI pretty much gave up on MSM about the same time as Wendy's "Where's the meat?" campaign. At that time MSM was putting bits of tofu on a big fluffy bun.
I see now that they have done away with even the tofu and the bun. All the seems to be left is yellow around the mouths and fingers of our "journalists". Maybe it's mustard.
Posted by: ural at May 9, 2006 7:11 PMIt seems like there should be something more between Ryan's & Texas Canuck's comments, but all I can see is a big vacant hole.

Boy, the MSM are in a feeding frenzy. 'Watched Stuffy and Is-He-Human? (videotped) and wonder how much longer I'm going to even bother.
Sweet, though. Don Newman's guests--even his Liberal/liberal ones--said the nonsense about the $125 hockey ticket was making a mountain out of mole hill ('turns out Hill checked with the ethics officer BEFORE he accepted it, and it's all perfectly within Parliamentary bounds; changing the boundaries is another issue) and BTW, commenting on this issue, David McGuinty was an unadulterated prig and a__hole, and that whining over Premier McGuinty's being snubbed by PMSH was "a tempest in a teapot."
The MSM are totally grasping at straws, trying at every turn to paint the Conservatives into a corner, to make them out to be unprincipled and "breaking rules" which they clearly aren't doing, or haven't done.
As Stepehn LeDrew pointed out, when the Chretien was in power he was constantly snubbing Ralph Klein, and no one made a to-do about it. That's politics. When the Librano$ were in power, I don't remember the CBC or any of the MSM EVER making an issue out of hockey tickets or favours received by them.
Double standard? 'How about quadruple standard?
Posted by: new kid on the block at May 9, 2006 10:40 PMHell, most of the time the Libs were talking about Alberta they were bashing the crap out of it during elections trying to show it as an example of "EVIL Conservative government in action". During the Libs reign (crime spree) the Alberta sepratist movement was born, westren allienation was created, and the phrase "screw the West, take the rest" was coined.
Can't win for losing eh?
"I love posting that statistic. because by definition ,50% of the population is dumber than average. exactly , everytime, always."
No, 50% of the population is dumber than the median. That is the mid-point of any sample. Average is different.
In the Canadian population, 50% of the population are dumber than the median, but no one has useful data on where that median is. It is likely within 2 or 3 points of the average, which is by definition 100. (IQ test scores are always relative to the "average", which is always defined as an IQ of 100.)
Let's take a sample of 10 people where the average IQ is 100 (just as it is in the main population).
Person 1 IQ=83
Person 2 IQ=79
Person 3 IQ=95
Person 4 IQ=89
Person 5 IQ=97
Person 6 IQ=103
Person 7 IQ=116
Person 8 IQ=149
Person 9 IQ=130
Person 10 IQ=79
In this sample, 60% of the sample is dumber than average, 40% are smarter than average. Nevertheless, the median and the average are, in this sample, both 100.
You're welcome.
Posted by: patrick at May 10, 2006 1:44 AM I have seen that when the press corruptly conspires to ask the questions it wants too, the new PM (Stephen the Unready) changes rooms then "selects" who will be asked to ask. I guess he models himself as a junior Bush.
Can we next see him make no public statements at all except at military bases (have to tighten up there, they usually just ask you if you have been drinking and that is as you are driving out of the base). Maybe his audience will be Air Cadets, Sea Cadets, or MPs, (Bush's favorite audience) and the questions will be typed out on slips of paper handed out by Sandra Buckler.
Our new PM is surely the Incredible Shrinking Man, dwindling with every step he takes, while the stature of the Right Honorable Jean Chretien grows taller. Of course he is history? Really. He won't pick the new leader? He won't design the campaign (in consultation, of course). He won't wipe the floor with the present fixture?
It's amazing how some people actually believe the MSM and their lies about PMSH. It's amazing how blind some people are to what is actually happening in Canada: a revolution, quiet and grassroots, but steadily, step-by-step, person-by-person, supplanting the corrupt and sleazy "powers that be."
No wonder the CBC is cancelling interviews with "conservative" (an old tactic) and stacking panels with people who only agree with them. No wonder the MSM is going ballistic; they KNOW what's happening: People are cancelling subscriptions to newspapers and magazines which refuse to tell the truth and are not tuning into Canada's "national" news network.
If the CBC had to rely on a real market share of the audience, they'd have been gone long ago.
The way things go in revolutions is that they usually get worse before they get better. 'Seems we're in the "worse" stage, but not for long...the BEST is yet to come.
