Comments Enabled

Thanks to the expertise of Michael McCullough, SDA has been upgraded to MT 3.2 and comments are now enabled. There is still work to do, and I have to play around with some of the new bells and whistles before things will be fully operational. Thanks too, to Sean McCormick for his efforts.

Thanks for your patience - the comments are easily 60% of the success of SDA, and I miss them as much as you folks do.

However, posting will still be a bit on the slow side - I have a heavy work load and a trip to Wisconsin coming up this weekend. But that will give you the incentive to check out some of the blogs on the sideroll you haven't had time for - including Mike's!.

UPDATE: The more aggressive spam filter is catching some of you by accident (caught me too!). I will try to watch and approve your "pending" comments as frequently as possible.

Not to mention checking out your recent posts.

Well, all I can say, Kate, is that this makes my life complete again. It was almost like the neighbourhood Starbucks (a block away) was undergoing renovations. It was that hard.

Tony:

With the advent of an interactive internet why would one bother with newsprint when the speed of the internet is far superior? I would fully expect this trend to continue.

Moreover, for all those eviromentalists, less trees consumed in the making of newspapers means more trees recycling CO2 into oxygen and a happier world. Who says technology is always environmentally unfriendly?

Lastly, if there a more trees we will have less small dead animals. Hat tip to Kate!!

Balance folks, you just have to look for it!!

Ayaan Hirsi Ali Interview, February 2006

Here’s a fascinating interview with Dutch MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali, on Norway’s NRK television in February 2006, talking about her film Submission, Theo Van Gogh, her views on Islam, the Danish cartoons, and her need for constant protection from Islamic threats of death. The clip starts with a short segment in Norwegian, then switches to English for the interview. (Hat tip: Sugiero.)

UPDATE at 5/7/06 9:41:22 pm:

And remember, she is speaking at Harvard on May 9.

UPDATE at 5/7/06 9:59:26 pm:

If you have trouble playing the video, make sure you have the latest version of the free Macromedia Flash Player. +

Having to re-enter the Email address seems an effective spam filter, or is that just the result of my previous incompete Email entry..
See if it does it again. TG

Welcome back Comments!
My days will once again be complete. Something was missing and I just couldn't put my finger on it. It was my daily fix at SDA. It is always good to get your take on things Kate but like you said, it was missing 60% content. Thanks much and have a great Day!

And they now open in a new tab, MUCH easier to read than a small popup window.

Posted by: ALbertan Technophile at May 8, 2006 12:58 PM

Albertan Technophile, when you encounter comments in a pop up window, hit F11 and it will change to full screen.

Great. Now that Kate's site is back up, it's back to not getting any work done! I had quite a few productive days when things weren't working here!

Posted by: Eskimo at May 8, 2006 1:06 PM

Well, sure, Kate:
Just as you get everything up and running, you are taking a weekend off to go and show off with your little guys.
Im not sure i can handle two hits in a row, its going to be tough.
I want to wish you the best of luck though, and some pictures would be appreciated.

Posted by: Lee at May 8, 2006 1:15 PM

I found the comment popups before to be hard to deal with since if I closed the main tab, sometimes I couldn't find an easy link back to the story I was commenting on.

Not a dog show this time - I'm giving a seminar. So my competition has a better chance of beating me.

Perhaps these seminars aren't in my best interest, come to think of it....

CP, aka communist press, has an icon for youse:

"The silver-haired political activist", aka

Jean le Baptiste/John the Baptist. You recall the story: John/Jean was the herald of Jhsms.

Where/when will the resurrection of Rene Levesque take place?

Trois Rivieres? Pont de Neuf Separatists? The Big"O"? Chateau de Harper-Merde? The Year of the Blue Snow? 24 Juin/June? St. Jean-Baptiste? Order the Cinquante/50. Bah, oui. +

Sovereigntist hopes march through Quebec will rekindle pride in cause

By ROSS MAROWITS

MONTREAL (CP) - A 60-year-old psychologist is hoping to rekindle sovereigntist pride by conducting a 47-day trek across Quebec to honour the movement's brightest star, Rene Levesque.

Jean-Marc Labreche plans to carry his Fleur-de-lis-tipped wooden staff through some 84 municipalities before raising the Quebec flag on the June 24 Fete nationale holiday at Levesque's birthplace in New Carlisle in eastern Quebec.

"We want to awaken the pride of Quebecers and bring them together with the goal of affirming Quebec's independence at this crucial moment in our history," Labreche told a news conference Monday.

The silver-haired political activist was to leave Montreal on Tuesday morning for a 1,250-kilometre walk - about 26 kilometres daily. +

Guite raises name of top crook

Poster: "of top crook"

MONTREAL -- Chuck Guite invoked the name of ex-prime minister Jean Chretien on Monday during the former bureaucrat's first serious chance to defend himself on sponsorship fraud charges.

On his first day questioning Crown witnesses at his trial, Guite introduced the possibility of political influence over the sponsorship contracts that left him facing fraud charges.

Guite used his first witness to raise the name of Jacques Corriveau, a former Liberal and close associate of Chretien whose influence, according to testimony, could virtually guarantee an ad firm would win contracts.

Former lobbyist Alain Renaud, who worked for advertising firm Groupaction Inc. in the 1990s to help drum up government business, described how ad executives nearly drooled when Corriveau became involved.

Guite had introduced Renaud to Corriveau as "someone very important to your business,'' Renaud testified.

Later, Guite asked Renaud about Corriveau's relationship to Chretien.

"They were very, very close and everyone knew it,'' Renaud said. "Everyone knew you didn't have one without the other.'' +

Sigmund Fraud
On the 150th birthday of Sigmund Freud, Roger Scruton explains why Freud's improbable theories still dominate the way we think about our minds

Roger Scruton
The Spectator

Saturday, May 06, 2006

Freud was born 150 years ago today, on May 6, 1856, the same year that Richard Wagner finished work on his opera Die Walkure, a work that dramatizes all the themes, from dreams to incest, that were to fascinate Freud.
There is no doubt in my mind that it was Wagner, not Freud, who got things right...
