"I'm just not qualified, You're mistaking celebrity for credibility."Actor Martin Sheen, on being "approached by Democratic Party representatives from his native state, Ohio, to see if he would be interested in running for the United States Senate" after the conclusion of The West Wing.
Martin Sheen's quote about separating credibility and celebrity is refreshing. To be fair, I am kind of surprised, considering what I used to see him do on the Warners lot. The faux President had an odd knack of showing up in the commissary with the four or five actors who played his Secret Service detail. As everyone was still in wardrobe, it looked very much like a President arriving with his security guys. Now it's possible he was just good friends with those guys and wanted to have lunch with them, but it sure looked like someone who'd hit his head and thought he was really President.

Would someone forward that quote to the third rate loser CommieBC toady, marixist-trudeaupian boot licking, pseudo-commedian, Rick Mercer?
Posted by: Doug at April 14, 2006 1:35 PMWow! that's a remarkably lucid statement coming from Sheen. he must have finally conquered his "personal demons", or was just released from the Betty Ford clinic.
Doug: we should encourage Rick Mercer, the unfunniest guy on TV, to run for leadership of the Libs. Think of the powerhouse lineup they'd have with McIsaac, Rae, Ignatieff, (I miss Belinda, sob!), etc.
When an actor starts making comments like that, you can just bet they're going to run.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Martin Sheen pro-life?
In any event, what a truly wise statement. Would that other Hollywood types follow his example.

Posted by: Scott at April 14, 2006 6:47 PMReminds me of a while ago when Seven Years in Tibet was out. I gained some respect for Brad Pitt when he kept asking the press why they were asking him about the Tibet situation, instead of someone who knew what they were talking about.
Gotta like celebrities who know that they are, at the end of the day, just celebreties.
Too bad Brad seems to have forgotten.
Posted by: Darcy McGee at April 14, 2006 11:08 PMYikes! Sounds like Sheen had what they call in Alcoholics Anonymous a "moment of clarity".
Maybe this'll also happen to a whole bunch of other Hollyweird folks. They seem to have confused not only "celebrity with credibility" but also heated delivery of left wing banalities with erudite intellect.
Posted by: Dave at April 15, 2006 8:49 AMYes, Martin Sheen is indeed outspokenly pro-life. He was born Ramon Estevez in Dayton, Ohio and took the stage name Sheen in honor of the famous priest Fulton Sheen.
Two of his kids (Charlie was one of them) got girls pregnant when they were young and Sheen made sure that the girls had the babies instead of having abortions. Sheen arranged for the babies to be adopted into strong Catholic families, if I remember correctly.
Sheen may be a dummy in other ways but he is correct on this important issue and I have respect for him for that.
