This Just In.... France apologizes to Germany for the terrorist resistance fighters during the second world war.
French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy says we have indisputable evidence that no French citizens were in the Resistance that this band of terrorist consisted of English soccer hooligans speaking in very bad French accents.

Gumbel has a point. But, you don’t see too many Eskimoes, sorry I mean Inuit, slidin’ and skatin’ either! The ice dancers are very exciting, but so was the guy who used to spin 10 plates at the same time on Ed Sullivan back in the day. No Olympic plate spinning.

Ugh, as much as it galls me to admit it, I actually agree with what Coulter is saying (Lord, just shoot me now). While I'm definitely right wing, I never like to think I'm Anne Coulter right wing... shit.

I have a serious problem with the way the media and the government is handling this cartoon business.

Freedom of Expression is a fundamental principal in this nation, and in the Western World in general. It's not about the damn Cartoons, it's about the right to say what you think, or in this case, draw what you want.

We as a society cannot on the one hand say "Abortion" is a right, being "Gay" is a right, "denouncing" a religion, idea, or person is a right, when we turn away from defending the media when they publish something distasteful.

I know this is an over-used phrase, but as Beatrice Hall once famously penned "I do not agree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it".

It's an abused phrase because it is an important statement on what we as Western Society hold as the most profound and fundamental right of existence.

To speak our minds.

Imagine being North Korean and writing a blog of the type Kate or any others do. They'd imprison you, or worse, send a bill to your family for the bullet they used to shut you up permanently.

Even idiots have the right to speak their beliefs, and if we as a society do not vigorously, voraciously, and avidly defend that right, we become something less than what we purport, and the dreams and foundations of our way of life become minimized.

I don't agree with Ernst Zundel, I abhor what comes from the mouth of the President of Iran in his denunciation of the holocaust, but dammit, if we deny people like that the opportunity to be assholes, where do we draw the line on what our own right to expression.

We can't do that. If some asshole wants to believe the world is flat, despite the evidence, who are we to tell him otherwise. Our moral prerogative is to laugh in his face and let him continue going on his way in his own mistaken belief.

This is no different in the case of the cartoons, or the case of denial of the holocaust... we have the right to make sure our children aren't exposed to this stupidity, but beyond that, we have a moral obligation to let them spew filth.

Remember, one mans bullshit is another mans religion.

That said, we also have the right to ignore them.

Regardless, while I agree it’s polite and good public relations not to print the cartoons, sometimes life and people are not polite. We’ve turned a couple of rude bastards printing a couple of very crappy cartoons, into an international crisis. Probably worse as a result of the lack of publishing the damn things, and too much attention on those who did.

If your of any religious or ethnic stripe, and you choose to come to a Western nation, you should taught that people can be ignorant, and it’s legal. You need to recognize that the west is not static in its morality and ethical standards, and it’s not your right to try and make them that way.

This staged violence demands rebuttal. It demands a pound of flesh for the uselessness of the demonstrations.

Muslims have the choice. They can write letters, march, demonstrate, denounce, boycott... the list of alternatives is endless, but violence is not the reasoned response.

Are we then to say we are "to enlightened" to respond back. We are to "mature", to show the Syrian and Iranian governments the error of their ways.

Shouldn't we at least be kicking out their ambassador's, barring them entry to the UN. Cut them off until they start behaving in a more dignified fashion?

We should respond somehow... otherwise we are telling them it's okay to react violently. It's okay to burn down someone else's property on their sovereign soil.

I think Ezra Levant is an asshole, but he's a fricken hack publisher... what do people expect? He is right when he says he's got a right to publish the cartoons.

Don't buy his magazine if you don't want to see them. If you really want to hurt the guy for publishing them, don't give him any recognition for having done so. Ignoring him and his magazine are the easiest way's to insure he doesn't try to sensationalize them again.

That's what our society is about;

Choice.

Re: Bill Graham playing chicken with the Conservatives.

1) Can't wait for Harper to stare him in the eye and say "Make My Day".

2) Graham actually said that the NDP gave us this Conservative government (giving exactly 0 credit to the Canadian voting public). What he was really saying was "how dare you turn your back on THE TEAM."

William: I say REPEAL ALL HATE LAWS, including holocaust denial. Always best to have stupid ideas out in the open instead of festering underground. Distinguish "hate" from "incitement". Mercilessly nail inciters.
The enemy is brilliantly exploiting our hate laws. They must find us comical!

What the hell are insurgents? They fight in civilian clothes and hide amongst the civilian population - I don't think the right word for them is insurgent. Seems I would consider them cowards since they are not out in the open. Oh yes, the other word is terrorist. I noticed all the detainees that were abused still had their heads attached to their bodies. Now if they were missing this part of their anatomy I would have to say they were abused.

As for Mr. Graham - isn't he a blowhard. Does he think that the new government will give into their blackmail as the previous government did. Maybe they are afraid that if this Conservative government hangs in there too long they will get to the bottom of all that corruption. Have you ever in your life heard such threats come from an opposition party long before the Commons has had its first seating. The way they and the media have been going on it actually feels that parliament has been in session for months. As for PM Harper - way a go - your picks are going to be winners. If things do collapse within a short time, who do you think will be running as the Lib. PM. Bet dollars to donuts it will be the one and only Paul Martin. He hasn't submitted his resignation as of yet. Wonder what he is waiting for. He didn't work that hard trying to be PM to be seated on the back burner. Oh what fun this will be to watch.

Though I am a fan of the Winter Olympics, especially hockey, I do believe some of what Bryant Gumbel had to say. There is no doubt that it came across very poorly though.

Though this is strickly based on speculation, I think what he was attempting to say is that the Winter Olympics are sports, on average, that promote elitism. So it's not about the color of your skin, it is about social inequality.

How many of the sports in the Winter Olympics are inclusive to all people?

Not many.

How many people in low income families can afford to buy a 65,000 dollar second hand bobsled or a 20,000 skeleton or luge?

How many people in low income families can afford to but skis and send their kids on high cost ski trips and lessons? I mean god, i can barely afford to go some weekends and I have a great job.

How many people in low income families can afford the cost of putting their child in a figure skating program?

How many people in low income families live near a biathlelon course or have the money to send their child to join a biathelon club or better yet buy the expensive gun?

I could go on, but I won't. Thank goodness that there are some second hand stores in Canada that sell hockey equipment or maybe I would have that sport on the non-inclusive list as well. it's not like it hasn't been argued before by parents who spend an arm and a leg just to keep their child in hockey.

I guess what Bryant Gumbel meant, with his reference to march Madness, was that sports such as soccer, basketball and baseball can be played by all countries mo matter what the climate, social conditions or lack of equipment. As well, there is no doubt that you will see more different ethnicities in the World Cup of Soccer, March Madness, World Baseball Classic.

Only because they are affordable sports foe ALL to play. That is all.

Re: Real Athletes,
Some days it just burns my butt that idiots like Bryant Gumbel spout off about something not being real because there isn't a fair number of black or whatever race, creed, colour, sex, in whatever game, activity, political party, group or organization.

I bet he thinks the Jamacia bobsled team was only a movie too. They are real as is the speedskater I saw a few days back. I do have to admit though, there wasn't too many Lebanese lugers out there. Nor Syrian snowboarders either. It's the frikin' "WINTER" Olymtics dude. Not too many people of dark skin up in the frozen lands. I have yet to see a rule book that says that if you are A, B, or C then you can't play these sports. If only a small number of A, B, or C athletes play in a winter sport then a proportionally smaller amount will rise to the elite level.
Mind you, this dipwad has put his foot in his mouth before and probably will again.

You know, when I watch the olympics, I see countries, and when I watch March madness, I see University names (go Gonzaga). I have been watching for the wrong thing all along. Thanks Bryant Gumbel, from now on I am watching for blacks and browns and whites and yellows and the team composition to make my decision.

Better still, show them that everyone in the oil rich state of Alberta has their own flush toilet, car, fridge and house.

Their's is an oil rich state. They could enjoy these toys and a measure of freedom to worry about money and more stuff if they turned towards democracy.

It never seems to dawn on them that in their fundamentalist system it is only the few gun slinger Emirs at the top who get the full set of toys. TG

jypsy Ontario- "What the hell are insurgents?"

With respect to Iraq the word gets very fuzzy. You've got Baathists, terrorists and *alot* of militias. Depending on how you choose to define the word "insurgent" may apply to the majority of Iraq's police departments (the militias drove out or killed most the secular cops) and army units.
