Your Taxdollars At Work

{I've moved this post back to the top for the time being. Scroll down for new posts}

Conservative Life;

A complete listing of international travel by public servants can be found here... All of this travel took place in one year.

Interestingly, if you look at the contracts (here) in some of these exotic locations you will find that our public service is not exactly slumming it...

  • Le Royal Mansour Meridien - Casablanca 192 nights
  • InterContinental V Centenario - Santo Domingo 587 nights
  • NH Krystal Cancun Hotel - Cancun, Mexico 800 nights
  • Where are our intrepid radio talk guys? Here's an opportunity for the Peter Warrens and Adlers to shame the mainstream networks.

Craig is also hosting video on this - download here (7 megs)

From the comments at CL - "a media organization, which shall remain nameless, is (or at least was) planning on airing the complete story AFTER the election. How can we hold our politicians to account if we aren't informed BEFORE the election?!?"

Indeed. As our media betters aren't up to the task, perhaps some of our intrepid readers can do a little emailing to send this story into broad circulation. (Remember to send people to the Conservative Life post, not here.)

It just ads up and keeps adding up. Scandal and waste. Scandal and waste.

People ask if other politcal parties are different? I say let's find out because this is crazy.

"THE REAL SENSE OF LIBERAL ENTITLEMENT AND CORRUPTION"

    So now they're attacking bloggers.

It is a sign not just of how corrupt, but of how dangerous and desperate Paul Martin, the Liberal Party, and its allies are that their 178th reaction (after releasing the Canadian Forces attack ads and any other useless fear and smear based counterattacks) as they are continually sinking in the polls on the way to a historical defeat is to limit free political speech.

They are losing in the realm of ideas and there appears to be despair in the ranks of many left-of-centre bloggers, particularly Liberals, because of the poor ethics and lack of substantive ideas their party gives them to work with. I am just a private citizen who started commenting on blogs and writing letters to the editor a few weeks ago, and it's still not hard trouncing them in the battle of ideas.

    Opponents Attack Tory Bloggers

What they are ignoring, however, is real, massive abuses of power and appearances of abuse of power that continue today, not figuratively today, but actually today.

And I'm not talking about Adscam, Income Trust, "Next-door Rec-home Land-flip", Alleged Bribery (for Electoral Gain), or any of a gathering mountain of Liberal Party scandals.

I'm talking about THE LIBERAL PARTY PRESIDENT SOLICITING CASH FROM PUBLIC SERVANTS AT THEIR JOB - WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE NON-PARTISAN AND NON-POLITICAL.

The Liberals Party is facing some time out in the penalty box from the people of Canada and instead of competing and winning in the realm of ideas, they are fearmongering, distorting, lying, and generally behaving like some of the worst governments around the world today.

Which is why the Canadian people have had enough of them. As I explained to the young Subway worker who asked what I thought tonight, "Vote Conservative, vote NDP, vote Green, but do not vote for the Liberal Party, which insults our soldiers while sending them to fight and die in Afghanistan (alongside our American allies, no less, who helped save two of our soldiers' lives on Sunday by airlifting them to an advanced military hospital) while they face a deadly enemy in Afghanistan at your orders.

And vote for the party of your choice that will spend, invest, or return your money (tax cuts), not steal it for themselves and their friends.

And Liberal Party, I'm still waiting. Where is our $1,142,818.27?

Another question... is your party fighting so hard and so dirty because you are afraid of having your books examined on January 24th? Have multiple police and other investigations caused some concern in the Liberal Party hierarchy?

WTF? Cancun? Why would any public servant ever be sent to Cancun on our tab?

Anyone have any idea on why this hasn't surfaced in the election? This would be a great issue in the last days of the election.

Why isn't the MSM running with this horrendous scandal...on the last week of the campaign....do they still have a reflex to protect "da boss"?

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at January 18, 2006 10:50 AM

I wonder if the MSM is a little worried that revelations of similar, cozy Liberal rewards, courtesy of taxpayers, were sent their way as well. Otherwise, why not report this? This is outrageous.

Martin knows only suckers pay tax in Canada, us suckers who can't write laws to favour ourselves.

I have long suspected that there's a media cesspool lying beneath stories such as this that no one in big media has any incentive to bring to the light of day.

I'm betting that the ties are to CTV - The "potemkin village" of "private" tv journalism in Canada.

    Hey Plato,

I did plug the block heater in this morning. Then I bumped my arm on the bumper. It was so col my arm shattered into a million pieces. I had to buy a new arm. I'm not making this stuff up. I also can't say it with a straight face.

    Go Liberals!

Go straight ahead 10 paces, take a right and there's a van waiting there to take you to prison. It's pretty warm in prison too you know. I'm not making this up. I just asked Big Jon how warm it is in prison.

WTF??? In my military days remember being "relocated" to exotic locations and staying in luxury accomodations. Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and the Travelodge (Main & Athabasca I think)comes to mind. Yes, stayed there for three weeks on the taxpayer's dime because they lost all my worldly possessions and the van that was moving them. I don't think my bill came quite up to $25K though. sighhh, always the pauper, never the prince.

O/T a bit: Where in heaven's name can I find Kate's CBC TV interview? I watched enough CBC video in the past day to last me a lifetime.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at January 18, 2006 11:13 AM

Beyond the obvious government owned CBC, I have seen a different mindset among the media in Canada compared to the media in the United States.

In the United States, regardless of who is in office, the media is focused on finding scandal to hold the governemnt to account; the greatest accomplishment a member of the press can strive for is to find the story that determines the outcome of an election. The reason Dan Rather ran with his (false) story was that he wanted to be the man who took down the president; he stuck by it when it was false because of his obvious bias.

In Canada (it seems) that there is an underlying desire to not effect the outcome of an election; even when they publish something negative about the conservatives it only becomes a big story after there is public outrage.

Let's be clear here, the average American is no different than the average Canadian, we just want GOOD government, and the freedom to pursue a good life, happiness, and keep government OUT of our private lives. Trudeau had THAT part right! Besides sam... you make NO mention about the "free ride" the Lieberals have had on the backs of the US when it comes to our NATO commitments.Slam Bush if you must, slam the various lobby groups, but please don't slam Americans in general. PSAC Supports Labour Friendly Candidates

OTTAWA – Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) in Ottawa and
Eastern Ontario have prepared a list of local candidates they are endorsing in this
    federal election.

“Members have volunteered their time to survey the candidates to find out where they
and their parties stand on issues that are not necessarily mentioned in party platforms.
Members have also raised questions at candidates’ meetings,” says Ed Cashman,
    PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President (NCR).

The candidates have been asked about such issues as the privatization of public
services, whistleblower legislation, the transfer of jobs outside the region, child care,
anti-scab legislation, and the public service pension fund. Members have also been
examining the track record of current Members of Parliament who are seeking re-
election, as well as public positions taken by the candidates.

“In Ottawa and Eastern Ontario, members of the union’s political action committee have
identified several candidates we believe are worthy of special notice,” indicates
Cashman. “The PSAC is therefore endorsing the following candidates:

In Leeds Grenville, Bob Eaton (Liberal)
In Ottawa Centre, Paul Dewar (NDP)
In Ottawa Orléans, Marc Godbout (Liberal)
In Ottawa South, Henri Sader (NDP)
In Ottawa Vanier, Ric Dagenais (NDP)
In Ottawa West Nepean, Marlene Rivier (NDP)

“We believe that these candidates, if elected, will be strong voices in Parliament for
workers in the federal public sector.” >>

First, thanks Bernard for the clarification re: "CL".

Second, I think the MSM is intentionally NOT covering stories brought to light by bloggers in some strange attempt to protect their turf. If it doesn't cross their desk in the form of an AP or Reuters News Release, they won't cover it.

An in this case, some of these stories are particular un-newsworthy because they were discovered by Conservatives - individuals they consider less civilized than their more enlightened selves.

Mike Cohen — McKenna cancels on Board of Trade

A few months ago, I received a notice from the Montreal Board of Trade announcing that Canadian ambassador to the United States Frank McKenna would be the keynote speaker at a Jan. 26 luncheon. I marked it in my calendar and called the board Friday to confirm. “It’s been postponed,” I was told. Given the way the polls are trending, Paul Martin’s handpicked guy in Washington has no wish to speak to a huge Montreal audience only three days after next Monday’s federal election. His cancellation is election-related, a board official confirmed. Don’t expect a new booking. If Stephen Harper wins, he’ll send his own man to meet with George W. Bush while McKenna vies for Martin’s job. >>

    Hello,

We have been researching this topic for a possible story, and it is slated to (possibly) air next week.

There are no political motives whatsoever behind decisions on when our stories go to air. CTV's lineup is very full this week -- with election coverage and interviews with leaders from all three parties. Please contact me if you require more information.

What is the "conservative coalition" of ideas? Actually, conservatism and conservative parties, as we've known them over the decades, have always been coalitions. Though these coalitions are complex and continually shifting, two distinctive elements have long been identifiable. Ted Byfield labelled these factions "neo-con" and "theo-con." More commonly, they are known simply as economic conservatives and social conservatives. Properly speaking, they are called classical or enlightenment liberalism and classical or Burkean conservatism. The one called "economic conservatism" does indeed come from classical liberalism. Its primary value is individual freedom, and to that end it stresses private enterprise, free trade, religious toleration, limited government and the rule of law. The other philosophy is Burkean conservatism. Its primary value is social order. It stresses respect for customs and traditions (religious traditions above all), voluntary association, and personal self-restraint reinforced by moral and legal sanctions on behaviour.

Why wouldn't someone at the CPC simply create a news release that says:

    - - - - -

"We are of the understanding that CTV News' Kathy Tomlinson is sitting on a story regarding what appears to be a cover-up of taxpayer funded vacations to beautiful destinations around the world including Casablanca, Cancun, Barbados.....etc. under the program called "Relocation Services".

Even if CTV is unwilling to air the entire piece prior to the election, we would request that all documents relating to the story be released to the public on their website immediately so that the Canadian Citizens can review those expenses and determine if the status quo in Ottawa is what they wish to support.

    etc.

    - - - - -

Bottom Line: The news release FORCES the story to be broken.

Laxer? ?? Lax... Laxer... wait,.. yes, ex-Waffle NDP Laxer; James is not waffling here: Clearly in thrall of Socialist central planning, statism, coercion & all the failed Socialist dogmas. But he recognizes: Defeat. >>

    Excerpt:
    .....

The NDP, which played a crucial role in picking the timing of the election and shaping the central issue of Liberal scandals, helped Mr. Harper on his way. NDP strategy -- to continually attack the Liberals, while scarcely mentioning Mr. Harper -- would, it was hoped, block the Liberals from winning over soft NDP voters in the campaign's last days. Neither Paul Martin nor Jack Layton anticipated how thoroughly Mr. Harper had learned the lessons of 2004. Moderating his image, he's on the verge of a historic breakthrough in Ontario. And the NDP has helped defang him.

The strategies of the Liberals and the NDP are in tatters as Mulroney's children stand ready to inherit the kingdom. For those who have believed passionately in a Canada in which Ottawa plays a strong role in shaping the social policies of the nation, these are dispiriting days. Clearly, the parties that favour the Canadian system will have to be rebuilt from the ground up after Jan. 23.

"Why does Harper want to stop trading with the worlds largest economy, China?"

I've never heard him say this, but I'd applaud him for his conviction if it was the case.

Why should we encourage trade with one of the world's most repressive communist dictatorships?
They have the blood of 80 million of their own citizens on their hands and continue to run labour camps for political prisoners.

If that's not enough, how about the number of executions (bullet in the back of the head) annually, or their 'one child' policy that has resulted in millions of abortions?

Or how about their rampant theft of technologies and willingness to break patent and copyright rules, putting legitimate western countries in peril?

China is not a benign trading partner and will not respect any rules of international trade. Or is it just about the cash?

If it is just about the cash it doesn't sound very left-wing now, does it.
