La Presse Endorses Harper

Emergency meeting at the Toronto Star... Reuters;

"After the recent tumultuous years, putting a methodical and thorough person at the head of the Canadian government can do the most good," the newspaper said in an editorial that backed the Conservatives for the first time since 1988.

La Presse traditionally takes a pro-Canada stance. But the family that owns the broadsheet through holding company Power Corp. of Canada has close ties to the Liberals, and La Presse supported the Liberals in past elections.

Just as a question ...

Who in their right (no pun intended) mind would endorse Paul Martin after his term as Prime Minister? His plan apears to be "I'll make it up as I go along" or possibly "What do the polls say this week?"

Could you imagine the kind of carnage his dithering and incompetence would do during a referendum on Seperation?

Whether you agree with him or not, eveyone can say that Stephen Harper has a direction which he wants to take the country; the same can not be said about Paul Martin.

Doug...Keep the stupid comments coming they only show how smart you really are.

Have you been drinking?

Posted by: Ron at January 17, 2006 4:48 PM

Geez, if Hell already froze over with the G&M endorsing the Conservatives, what is left when the Desmarais' family paper comes out for them? Satan becoming an ice delivery man (for a Power Corp subsidiary of course)?

This election is now officially beyond parody.

O/T

What was this "nuclear bomb" that the libs were releasing today?

Posted by: Colin at January 17, 2006 5:25 PM

The Liberals have not retained power for this many years by folding under pressure, be sure that they will be pulling out all of the stops from here on in.They will do anything, say anything, and eat their own if they have to.
I hope we are popping corks and toasting Stephen Harper and the Conservatives by this time next week, but, let's wait until the votes are in.

One more thing, let's do what we can to make it happen, volunteer at the office of the Conservative running in your area to transport those who cannot get to the polls on their own.

Posted by: Platty at January 17, 2006 5:28 PM

Don't be fooled. Power Corp supports the winner, Liberal or Conservative. Harper is the first leader in ages that does not have ties to Power Corp, that is why they are grooming Peter McKay to be his successor.

Posted by: wade at January 17, 2006 5:34 PM

it aint over till its over. IF the libelists release their death grip on the keys to the kingdom the game just starts. don't everyone abandon their duty to be eternally vigilant until the encampment is perfectly secure.

Mike Duffy was just fawning over Buzz Hargrove and Sid Ryan who were sounding the alarm about the dangers of a Conservative government. Why give them air time? Oh, right, it's a dumbocracy. "Fairness. Expression of other viewpoints." I've got a remote, right? Look, I can't watch the CBC (even though I would have been sorely tempted if I had known Kate was going to be on). Now CTV is suspect. Thank goodness we've got SDA!

Moose ,do like I do,if you have to watch the boob tube ,tune in to the american stations for this week and keep your finger on the "mute" just in case they cross channel.I get all the info I need from SDA.l

Posted by: Graham at January 17, 2006 5:59 PM

Well, Wade, that had occurred in the back of my mind, but I hate getting all Power Corp.-conspiracist. Not that it isn't tempting.

Power Corp is waiting for Harper to fail - hoping he will. The Libs can regroup, and MacKay is being wooed by the daughter. Wonder why Petie keeps choosing Mata-Hari types? Doesn't show good judgement really. Love to see Harper break the stranglehold that group has on Canadian politics, turn over rock after rock and see what's under there. No surprises, I'll bet.

Powercor/Quebecor is done with another worn out PMO puppet...a new corporate paronage android is purchased and in the wings and ready for the post election Liberal leadership purge/coronation....probably just weeks after the loss.

I tend not to believe conspiracys, but still like to think about them, but here is a conspiracy for you:

It is quite obvious that Paul Martin is done for as the leader of the Federal Liberals; as it stands now they have no chance of a majority government and would need to replace Paul Martin before the next election.

Now, there are no well known obvious successors to Paul Martin in the Liberal party currently, and most of those that could be named are tied to Paul Martin (the incompetent leader) or Jean Crietien (the crook) so they need someone from the outside. At best, it will take 6 months to get rid of Paul Martin and another 2-3 years before their new leader will be able to successfully lead the party to success in an election.

It is reasonable (as far as conspiracys go) to suspect that many liberal insiders are willing to give up and let the conservatives get a minority/majority (and support it in the case of a minority) to ensure Paul Martin goes down, and to provide stability so that they can replace him.

Essentially, let the G&M and Red-Star (and any other media outlet) support the Conservatives so that the Liberals will win the next election; let's face it if they were successful most of the liberal cabinet ministers would disapear leaving no attachment between the current party and the future party (thus any audit of government bodies, regardless of what they turn up, would not effect future election hopes)

Wade said:"Harper is the first leader in ages that does not have ties to Power Corp, that is why they are grooming Peter McKay to be his successor."

Bingo! Moses frees his people and leads them all the way to the PMO and his successor sells them back to Herod....the Powercor networked PCs let Harper do all the work now all they just have to steal the crown.

After the stellar political accomplisments Harper and his reformed conservative vanguard have made, eye any CPC leadership detractors with a questioning as to who they serve....Right Belinda? CPC's deputy leader being fixed up with Sophie Desmarais by the Mulroneys reeks of political match making by forces that are too comfortable with patronage party dynasties.

Govern well Steven, Govern long and watch your back...Ottawa is a treacherous place for principled statesmen unconnected to the power brokering cartel.

Unity Group signed silence pact, sources say.

Deal was struck in the 1990s; government was told two months ago

By DANIEL LEBLANC AND JANE TABER

Tuesday, January 17, 2006 Page A8

OTTAWA -- The Canadian Council for Unity signed a confidentiality agreement in the 1990s with one of its former officials who it alleged had misappropriated $300,000 in federal funds without alerting the government or law-enforcement authorities, sources have told The Globe and Mail.

The Montreal-based federalist group made the surprise revelation to officials at Canadian Heritage two months ago, fearing that a book by investigative journalist Normand Lester would reveal the existence of the confidentiality agreement.

However, Mr. Lester's book, which came out last week, did not make any reference to such an agreement between the CUC and one of its former officials.

The Department of Canadian Heritage had already called on the RCMP to review the matter by the time the book was released. The Mounties have not yet decided whether to launch a full investigation.

Sources in Ottawa and Montreal said the confidentiality agreement is a cause of much nervousness at the CUC and Canadian Heritage. Its existence has been a closely guarded secret in senior circles in the public service, where high-level meetings have been held to determine how to handle the matter.

"They're [Heritage officials] totally perplexed, especially since they thought it was in the book and since found out it wasn't," said a source close to the story.

Sources said the matter is in the hands of Diane Fulford, an assistant deputy minister at Heritage, where a copy of the agreement is tightly held. >> more

I’ve been banging away for months about the Stronach/Desmarais cabal now I must admit that I'm a bit shocked by this as it shoots down many of my theories about Desmarais. Is it a Desmarais conspiracy? The old boy is still pretty involved in politics, for instance I’ve heard it from a very good source that he was behind the Bouchard Manifesto, so he can be very sensible when it comes to what’s good for business ( his business).

Nevertheless this is quite a move in La Presse. He’s not particularly well. Maybe he’s doing the right thing in his final days? Maybe we should give Desmarais the benefit of the doubt?

Doan also demanded that Coderre make a public retraction in the motion filed in Quebec superior court. >>>

I get an uneasy feeling when I hear of any Power Corp. entity saying anything positive about Steven Harper, let alone endorsing him. Don't forget that everything we hated about Martin, Chretien and Trudeau was orchestrated by these same rich families. True, there were a few side scams but the main ones had the blessing of the godfather(s). If they're dumping Martin it's just because he's served his usefulness and they are moving on to something else.

This bears watching closely over the next two years. The first tell-tale signs will be the Commissions of Inquiry. How many? Which ones are left out? I for one will be watching this very closely.

Peter C. Newman had it right when he said (paraphrasing here) "Paul Desmarais collects politicians like some people collect art". And Paul Desmarais isn't the only one.

The beginning of influence peddling. The objective being to turn the Conservative party into a Liberal party twin.

The ousting of Conservatives most concerned with Christian morality will be the sign to watch for. We'll see.

No party, and no country, will do well without blessings from the Father. That's why the Liberals are looking like such fools at the present time. If people want Canada to look the same way, continue to ban parts of scripture as hate liturature. That will do it.

John I concur with your analogy to a point, these people are seeing the tide turning and want to jump on the winning bandwagon now, be it Conservative, Marijuana, Green or commie it doesn't matter it's all quebecor or powercorp. they must survive at all cost!!
Paul Martin believes that
I'm not making this up

Posted by: kelly at January 17, 2006 11:18 PM

Post-election, it'll be the blogosphere's job to keep the kleptocracy off-balance and aware that everyone is on to them, and to mobilize people to jump down their throats if necessary. I hope that Demarais in his last days will truly realize what he has done.

Posted by: Monique at January 17, 2006 11:20 PM

"Maybe we should give Desmarais the benefit of the doubt?"

No.

And I'm saying this as an American resident in Canada, who two years ago hadn't ever heard of Power Corp. (I had heard of the Desmarais family, but only because Peter's squeeze's first marriage is one of the weddings lavishly chronicled in Martha Stewart's gorgeous 1986 book Weddings. The book compared the family to the Kennedys. All too apt in some ways.)

Posted by: Meg Q at January 17, 2006 11:23 PM

and as Mr. Mao said, it doesn't matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.... If Power Corp is involved, it will be the death of the real right, and the rise of the Liberals again.
I hope the western conservatives have some sense to keep the Quebec family business out of federal politics.

Here's my favourite goof of the campaign out here in the beautiful Okanagan valley (BC). The Liberal candidate ad encourages voters to vote for someone who will be on the Government side of the house!!! Is that shooting yourself in the foot? Or what?

Posted by: Jack at January 18, 2006 1:40 AM

The Desmarais/Power Corp (some say family compact) connection with the Liberal party is far less worrisome than the Martin affection with the Maurice Strong, Bono, UN disfunction. You know the ones who prop up 3rd world kleptocrats, think global warming/Kyoto is the only priority (unless of course if China/India et al are spewing carbon dioxide), and are up to their eyeballs in oil-for-food scandal. This is where Mr Martin's passion lies. Thank God the voters are retiring him. Dare I say, God bless Canada!!
