The Pushback Begins

In the comments, George writes;

[J]ust announced by Valeri on Roy Greens show(900 CHML) that he is going to sue the Bourque blog for the article on Valeri's house sale. Surely everyone knows that Bourque is a news site, not a blog. But just like Layton and the Shouldice Clinic that he didn't know it was private--is this a way for the Liberals to get a wedge issue started to shut down blogs--planting in peoples minds that blogs are bad? Surely anyone knows the difference between blogs and nes sites--Bourque printed an article from the MSM--this is the Liberals first move against bloggers--I have no doubt about that.

He didn't actually print it - he linked to the Hamilton Spectator story.

Nice move, Valeri. Now you look stupid as well as crooked.

gotta rage at someone. gotta wonder how the wife, kids, pets, neighbours, feel about the disappointment with his chosen path. should i say he's lucky he's living in present day canada instead of fascist italy at a time when the citizens asserted their power upon the legislators (read oppressive masters). if i flipped my house for a profit of 275K in 3 months, i'd certainly not want anyone but my lawyers to know about it. shhh, they're waking up.

Posted by: Ottawa Core at January 13, 2006 11:05 AM

Kate...In a private poll I conducted with friends and family almost nobody knew what a blog was let alone the difference between blogs and 'nes' sites. Most laughed at the word blog. This thing is still in its infancy.

Posted by: Ron at January 13, 2006 11:07 AM

Sure, three months SEEMS like a short time, but I'm quite confident it was more than sufficient for TV to establish the flipped home as his principal residence, thereby ensuring the $275K profit was tax-free as well.

Posted by: Great Walls of Fire at January 13, 2006 11:08 AM

Except I don't think he's suing over the link to the Spectator article. The case law is clear that you can't be sued for mere linking to publicly available information/sites. But it is to another link of Bourque's which appeared before the Spectator article and which, curiously, is no longer there. I'll see if I can find the cache.

Posted by: TB at January 13, 2006 11:10 AM

Nice move Kate...if you had any actual knowledge of this you would know that Bourque was the original place of the posting of the "documents" seeming to imply something was up on January 10th...the Hamilton Spectator story was posted on its site on the 12th...

Posted by: David at January 13, 2006 11:14 AM

What everyone is missing is the fact that Ng also profited from tax dollars, seemingly because he was a friend of the LPOC.

Posted by: George at January 13, 2006 11:19 AM

"He LOOKS stupid as well as crooked"

ulm.....what in that sentence surprises anyone....just asking...

Posted by: Stephen at January 13, 2006 11:21 AM

how did ng profit from tax dollars? as I understand it a person named Joe and a person named John who by the way signed a declaration cleared by the Ethics Commissioner as not being involved with Tony in any way, doesn't say to me that either of them profited from tax dollars...check your facts sherlock - Sheila Copps was the only Minister in Hamilton at the time Joe Ng went on his trade mission and she had the benefit of his large donations.

Posted by: David at January 13, 2006 11:28 AM

From the Hamilton Spectator Article:

Joe Ng’s engineering company has been a long-time financial supporter of the federal Liberals, with contributions totaling at least $16,000.

Valeri indicated that Joe Ng has contributed to his election campaigns in the past.

“Certainly I know that he has contributed to the Liberal party,” said Valeri.

In 1993, the largest single donation to the campaign of former Hamilton East MP Sheila Copps was a $5,500 contribution from Ng’s company.

That was the same year that Ng’s engineering firm won a large contract in China, with the help of a $4.5 million U.S. loan from the federal Export Development Corporation to the Chinese purchaser.

Have to keep those Liberal contributors happy????
This is just more of the same--support the Liberals get handouts--adscam comes to mind.

Posted by: George at January 13, 2006 11:47 AM

I'm not suggesting anything here that might be reality with regards to any specific individual, just speculation on real estate transactions...

All one has to do is treat the real estate transaction as if it was a tax-free sale of one's principal residence when one submits his or her personal tax return, if he/she knows he/she won't be audited it's really nothing, well worth the risk, at most an error of omission, subject to an adjustment and maybe an interest penalty if it ever comes up at some future time, well worth the risk if you are a well-connected Liberal, and a likely scenario if one is a Liberal with a rather nebulous grasp of right and wrong when it comes to material things, private property concepts.

Ottawa Sun: Nepean-Carleton Liberal candidate, M, Gaffney, is threatening to sue:

http://www.thesurlybeaver.ca/

Libel chill.

Liberals attempt to stifle/shut down dissent in Canada.

It will not work, Liberals. If you shut down one blog/news aggregator, others will spring up. The blogosphere is your worst nightmare; a hydra for you; truth is out; you cannot suppress truth.

Posted by: maz2 at January 13, 2006 11:59 AM

Interesting. Here in Ottawa-Centre, the Liberal candidate threatened to sue the community newspaper, The Centretown News, because he didn't like their remarks about his unregistered lobbying. Across the river in Gatineau, the Liberal candidate threatened to sue the NDP candidate for daring to state that the Liberals are fostering a "culture of entitlement" (presumably for themselves, although the context isn't clear). In Toronto, a prominent Liberal candidate has threatened to sue the Toronto Star. In Montreal, a pro-Haiti heckler at a Paul Martin function spent five days in jail.

Talk about power-drunk. All that being said, I still find the notion of a Conservative government scary as hell. But at least they're playing an honest political game during this campaign.

Posted by: Dr.Dawg at January 13, 2006 12:21 PM

Before the blogs get shut down, please read below to my reworked military policy ad from the Liberals, after they consulted with the Chief of Defense Staff and the eminent historian, Jack Granatstein:

Stephen Harper wants to put rapid reaction units throughout Canada.

The trouble is this disperses troops too widely, creating command, control and logistics problems.

Do you know who already tried this?

Hitler in Russia.

That's right. Adolph Hitler

Does this mean Stephen Harper is a Nazi-loving Russian?

We don't know. He's not saying. What do you suppose he's hiding?

There's no way a man like that could love Canada.

We're not making this up.

Choose your Canada.

Posted by: Phil at January 13, 2006 12:23 PM

Soldiers.

Canadian Soldiers

In the streets, of our cities

With guns. Real Guns

In Holland

In 1945

Joyous citizens cheering

I am not making this up

Posted by: Fred at January 13, 2006 12:26 PM

So Valeri is going to sue.....that ought to really make the story disappear very quickly..... lol

Thank goodness the Liberals are not firefighters....everything would burn to the ground.

Posted by: CYXU at January 13, 2006 12:33 PM

Kate, as a law abiding gun owners we've seen things slowly escalating towards a total gun ban, which was our original worry about the gun registry. We were all just a bunch of rednecks though, now we see they will and are trying to take it one notch closer to that. I totally agree with you on the blogs, this is thier opportunity to kick the door in on free speech too (well what's left of it anyways) Man I hope they lose, this is getting ridiculous.

Posted by: Nails at January 13, 2006 12:55 PM

They will be able to control blogs about the same time they are able to control people who smoke pot or have an illegal handgun or drive over the speed limit or weat their seat best or drink and drive or dribble on the toilet seat when they pee.

For christ sakes I am so sick of living in a country full of fraidy cats.

Remember when there were great men who said things like "WE HAVE NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF"?

If any government tries to stiffle freedom of speech or freedom in general .. it's our duty to fight that government in any way possible. Got that?

Be brave pussy cats .. we can be free .. we can be brave. Getting your government benefits or your meaningless govenment job is not the most important thing in the world.

Posted by: Duke at January 13, 2006 12:56 PM

I am also being threatened with a lawsuit for my story about Mike Gaffney, Liberal candidate in Nepean-Carlton. I think they are getting rattled.

Posted by: The Surly Beaver at January 13, 2006 1:29 PM

Link to photocopied documents posted on Bourque:

http://www.bourque.org/Valeri.pdf

It appears there is more to this than just the purchase/sale by Valeri (77 days between closings). Additional documentation includes information on NG Engineering Ltd & links with Team Canada 2001 trip to Asia, EDC & Industry Canada.

Posted by: JM at January 13, 2006 2:16 PM

All of which were Sheila Copps' links JM. And they funded the party, yes, but were also the biggest donors to Copps's campaign. So what kind of loyalty would Valeri owe them do you think? And where do you think these documents are coming from?

Posted by: TB at January 13, 2006 2:24 PM

From the affadavit:

"They also discussed that I would be a 'hero', that the option to join the Liberal party would always be there and that they would be prepared to bill this political move as being my own to net me even more respect from within the Liberal ranks"

The language is all too familiar, given what we know of the Grewal and Mark instances. Also, the term "hero" is remarkably ironic, considering this:

http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=3f2d9409-5408-4d00-9d3e-26fb81cb7a62&k=18612

Is this what Paul Martin means by "hero"?

Oops. Wrong thread.

Posted by: A. Cooper at January 13, 2006 3:00 PM

Last night, on Michael Coren's show, the NDP candidate for Hamilton East claimed that while canvassing, he knocked on the door of a house that was displaying a liberal lawn sign. The occupants told him that they were recent immigrants who were not eligible to vote. When asked why they were displaying the sign, they informed him that they had been "told" that they had to.

The level of liberal corruption in Hamilton is mind-boggling. There is a Liberal/mafia(oops - sorry, they prefer to be called "organized businessmen" these days) joint venture that is running Hamilton into the ground (much like the Sopranos episode where they took over the sporting goods store) to the point that inevitably some sort of fed/prov bailout will be required.

Posted by: Pd at January 13, 2006 3:07 PM

Interesting story. Here's another one, from a few years ago. A friend of mine was canvassing for the NDP in Spadina. The street he was on had a neat rwo of Liberal signs in front of each house. But he wasn't put off, and knocked on a door. The person inside was very friendly, and promised to support the NDP candidate.

My friend was understandably puzzled, and pointed to the Liberal lawn sign. "They're the government," he was told. "We were informed that we have to display their sign--it's the law."

Would have been nice to follow that one up, but it was old news even before I heard about it.

Posted by: Dr.Dawg at January 13, 2006 3:14 PM

Here is another one. Back in the days of the Alliance/Reform Part, I was informed by an in-law, who is an immigrant, that they were informed by their local Liberal candidate(seeking re-election), that if they vote Reform, they would be deported. The Liberal candiadate, now retired, was from S.E. Asia.

Posted by: GaryinWpg at January 13, 2006 3:34 PM

apparently CBC pravda is under the same impression. Its continuous propaganda now. about 80% of the website is liberal now. they dont seem to understand - their top story - the discredited RalphMalph Goodale. although they are trying hard to repaint him as PMPM is not playing well to the masses.

PeterPansbridge--- the reporter of the fantasy world. two stars to the left and straight into mourning.

Posted by: cal2 at January 13, 2006 3:37 PM

well it isn't mine, but I like it, "Only oppression, should fear the full excercise of freedom"

Posted by: marc braun at January 13, 2006 3:52 PM

TB: "....So what kind of loyalty would Valeri owe them do you think?...."

Probably about as much loyalty as to an elderly neighbor whose home he saw as a quick way of making $275,000 in 77 days.

Posted by: JM at January 13, 2006 4:25 PM

JM: which is none. Thanks for agreeing with me.

Posted by: TB at January 13, 2006 4:32 PM

someone should try to get a affidavit from the immigrant person who was told they had to display a liberal sign even though they were not eligible to vote.

Posted by: spike at January 13, 2006 4:55 PM

He's going to sue Bourque for linking to a newspaper article?

Doesn't this mean that if I tell a friend about your site and recommend they check you out (yes, you're a hottie, Kate) I could be sued if you or anyone here says something inaccurate?

Better stop coming here, folks, and don't tell anyone about it. The censors have begun....

***Ominous dark music borrowed from the Liberal attack ads***

Posted by: Chris from Victoria, BC at January 13, 2006 5:19 PM

Wow did anyone see the video where the CBC was trying to ask puestions about the IT leak. He was fleeing like a rat leaving a burning ship. Perhaps they have found where the leak came from. As House leader he was privy to the Tax Announcement, although he denies knowing what the announcement was. Yah right, I have some land for you to flip in Florida Tony give me a call.

Posted by: Jim at January 13, 2006 5:30 PM

1. Fred -- you get the my vote for best ad parody so far.
2. I used to surf net just looking for interesting stuff, until I heard about blogs from a friend about 3 months ago, and that SDA was one of the better ones. Now, during my 30 minutes of free time a day, I go to SDA and a few of the others just to see what the real news is, and what people are saying. I think anyone trying to shut them down is going to come up against a lot of confrontation. Long live the blogs/bloggists/blogmeisters/bloggers.

Posted by: morison at January 13, 2006 5:40 PM

Chris from Victoria, BC: No there is a threat of suit for him distributing (allegedly) slanderous documents. Bourque has already removed the original link, but he had and posted the documents that the Spectator relied upon. Valeri was on CH TV at 5:30 which will be rebroadcast at 11:30 (EST) tonight explaining how this claim is complete bogus.

Posted by: TB at January 13, 2006 6:08 PM

Does anybody recognize the name of the Liberal broker? None other than the guy who approached Grewal, but later recanted.

Posted by: Iron Lady at January 13, 2006 6:15 PM

The funniest part is that even if Valeri is on the up and up here, he's been exposed as taking severe advantage of the elderly. Nice move Valeri.

To the commenter above about blogs versus pot smokers. Bloggers are far more dangerous to the Librano ilk than pot smokers. I predicted a while ago, and still believe this will be the case - that if the Libranos are returned to power, they will find a way to crack down on bloggers.

The race is on: can the blogosphere bring enough of the public to them to create a critical mass which will counterbalance the Librano silencing machine?

Working in favor of the blogosphere is that the very mention of 'blog' creates curiosity. It is a good thing to have publicity and bring public awareness to the blogs - it is that volume, that critical mass, the assures freedom of expression.

That gives no blogger license to libel, however, it does go a long way to expose political manipulation of the RMCP, for instance, to intimidate bloggers into silence.

My personal belief is that the Librano breed is far more sinister than commonly believed. The blogosphere is therefore an essential counterbalance if we are to maintain personal liberty within a democracy.

Posted by: Shaken at January 13, 2006 6:43 PM

Shaken

The servers for the blogs will simply move offshore and the bloggers will do a better job of staying undercover. So come get me you big RCMP weenies.
