The books, and maybe some auditing, followed by the special prosecutor?

thnx Kate for hosting the original contest.

One of these days when I get just a bit of time and start a blog of my own I think that's what I'll use for my handle.

Posted by: Fred at January 9, 2006 11:46 PM

I read the piece then read Marcie Abramovitch's piece on the debates.

It's interesting to note that in the four short paragraphs, She referenced herself 11 times.

Does this imply and egocentric personality. She sure looks like an NDP voter.

If I ever lose my sense of humour, I'd be like the left libs and have to be taken out and shot.

Thanks Kate!

Another killer, Kate. That last one has legs.

Posted by: Candace at January 10, 2006 12:03 AM

I'd go vote at 50 below to vote CPC - if necessary - and I used to work for Paul Martin at Finance!

Posted by: Two Cents at January 10, 2006 12:07 AM

Very well put Kate!
My Family and I are 40 below Conservatives.

Posted by: Sumbuddy at January 10, 2006 12:09 AM

Geez I am in Ontario, doesnt get that cold here...call me a freezing rain conservative....

BTW, I think PMPM just gave the CPC base another reason to be postal carriers, because this NWC thing just fires them up. Going round the blogs this is a big issue, seen as eliminating whatever last chance for a direct say there would be.

I dont see it energizing the Liberal base, which is what I think they hope it will do. Best cpc response, stick with Harpers answer in public, but bring it up at rally's etc that arent national.

this is a RED MEAT issue. But not for outside the base.

Duke on her website she calls herself at "left wing queer Canadian feminist"

It is comforting to know that she thinks only some of the Canadian economy should use Marxist economic theory.

Good one Kate, as usual you have way of expressing what us "40 Below Conservatives" are thinking. You are a true inspiration to myself for putting into words that which is so evident yet so hard to chrystalize into text. Thanks and just think, hopefully in two weeks or so we finally get to break out the "beer and popcorn".

I'm also from Ontario. I visited Saskatchewan this past July, but the temperature was above freezing! Years ago I worked in 30 below in Northern Ontario which might qualify as cold. After tonight's debate I'm in a perpetual shiver! Maybe Ontario is going to become a glacier! Paul Martin is a dangerous man. His NWC statement is very revealing.

Posted by: Bruce at January 10, 2006 12:34 AM

they've got the books... hahaha. yes, I'd be worried too.
ok, how about, has anybody asked how many will be appointed to positions like... "for example"... the next ambassador to Denmark is... Ralph Goodale? after all he is entitiled to something. Maybe the board of the CRTC needs to be expanded to 52 for all the ex-mp's that will need entitlements?
can we have a lottery for the "over / under" number this may be? remember when John Turner had a choice?

That was hilarious. A satirical, yet honest look at Canadian voter demographics. Lighten up Liberals, Conservatives have a sense of humor too.

"I must be honest and say that I don't fear the notwithstanding clause very much. It can be abused as anything can, but the history of the Canadian Bill of Rights Diefenbaker had adopted in 1960, it has a notwithstanding clause and it hasn't caused any great scandal [sic]. So I don't think the notwithstanding clause deters very significantly from the excellence of the Charter."

"...it is a way that the legislatures, federal and provincial, have of ensuring that the last word is held by the elected representatives of the people rather than by the courts."

After the notwithstanding clause gaffe you can mark me down as an absolute kelvin conservative

You can now say: "Mr. Martin is scary."

Posted by: Hans Rupprecht at January 10, 2006 3:47 AM

Hey, aren't old people generally supposed to vote conservatively? Then why is the Liberal base 65+ voters? And why are the Liberals losing the the Conservatives in every age bracket except for the 65+ cohort: http://tinypic.com/jzz4i8.jpg

I'll tell you why: follow the money. The Liberals have written enough tax loopholes into income trusts, family trusts, estate planning and offshore tax havens that wealthy seniors like Paul Martin pay little or no tax.

You don't read about this in the Globe or the Post because banks and brokerages, who benefit from Liberal sweetheart deals, advertise heavily in these papers.

The feds are losing billions - billions - in tax revenue due to sweetheart tax rules for their base - the seniors. Which means people from my generation get taxed more to make up for the shortfall. Nice!

I heard if Martin continues to drop in the polls, in an effort to "change the channel" he's going to scrap the Provinces. Course he's politically saavy, so he'll start by proposing to abolish PEI first, and move up from there.

SSMartin & Multicultural Minister Chan are not swinging together on Not-Withstanding Clause.

SSMartin exposed as a liar, a charlatan, a fraud.... Bozo Martin: say goodnight. >>>

Excerpt:
Of course, what Martin and the Liberals will now argue for the final two weeks of the campaign is that Harper's refusal to immediately agree to Martin's proposal means he has a, you guessed it, "hidden agenda" to use the Constitution's notwithstanding clause to declare same-sex marriages illegal. >>

Chan denies anti-gay stance
Chinese-language newspaper quoted Richmond MP as saying he opposes gays’ right to marry

Peter O’Neil, Vancouver Sun
Published: Monday, January 09, 2006

OTTAWA --Multiculturalism Minister Raymond Chan has denied that he advocated using the Constitution’s notwithstanding clause to deny homosexuals the right to marry.

Chan’s advocacy of the clause was reported in late April in the World Journal, a daily Chinese-language newspaper published in Vancouver that targets the Taiwanese immigrant community.

The reporter who wrote the story, now being circulated in an English translation, says he stands by its accuracy.

According to the story, Chan said he would advocate using the clause to stop Bill C-38, which passed in the House of Commons in late June.

However, a new statement issued by Liberal party headquarters quotes Chan as saying: “I have never been willing to use the notwithstanding clause to deny same-sex couples the charter right to marry.”

“This has been my position since the Supreme Court of Canada confirmed same-sex marriage as a charter right and reaffirmed the protection of religious freedom in 2004.”

Roy Ruan, the reporter who interviewed Chan and wrote the April story, laughed when Chan’s new statement was read to him.

Ruan noted that the minister was upset at the time about anti-gay-marriage groups attacking him.

Ruan told The Vancouver Sun that Chan, while still refusing in April to say how he’d vote on C-38, said he’d personally “prefer to use the notwithstanding clause.”

Chan, an evangelical Christian, voted for C-38 when it was passed in the House of Commons.

Now he says he was misquoted and insisted that Ruan is incorrect.

“I have always been very clear” that the notwithstanding clause isn’t a preferred option, Chan told The Vancouver Sun Friday.

Neither Ruan nor Chan has a tape recording of the interview.

Chan was quoted in the article as attacking a group called Defend Marriage B.C. for accusing him of being pro-gay-marriage.

Chan was paraphrased saying he hoped to stop the legislation using the section of the Constitution that allows Parliament to override charter rights for up to five years.

The issue is controversial because Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin has frequently accused the Conservatives and leader Stephen Harper of being too eager to trample on individual rights by invoking the notwithstanding clause, which has never been used by a federal government since the charter came into force in 1982.

Chan is seeking re-election in the Richmond riding, where more than 40 per cent of the constituents are ethnic Chinese.

He is running against Darrel Reid, the former president of Focus on the Family (Canada). Chan has attempted to portray Reid as hostile to the charter.

Watch for Martin to be hospitalized for exhaustion as he implodes completely. NWC? Hand over total power to unelected flakes on the bench? I'm sorry, but I really have a hard time with Jack Layton. He is just too, too slick - it comes off as scum. Yeccchhhh

Eliminate the Notwithstanding Clause?

Paul Martin is showing his true stripes as a little man, not a real political leader, much less a statesman.

In a democracy, one does NOT propose tinkering with the Constitution for reasons of partisan gamesmanship!

Moreover, the Canadian Constitution has far too Checks and Balances as it is. The PM can already pack the Supreme Court, and subordinate courts, with people of whatever ideological stripe or agenda he or she wishes, with absolutely no Parliamentary oversight. The elimination of the Notwithstanding Clause would in effect make the Supreme Court, the unelected Super-Parliament of Canada. A terrible, profoundly un-democratic idea!

And Stephen Harper's supposed to be the guy with the "scary agenda"?

Att: Hobby Farmer Martin.

Use your NWClause on this $20 Billion lawsuit. An attempt to stop this proceeding will result in an armed revolt/insurrection, IMO.

Mad cow class action suit to continue

A $20B mad cow class action lawsuit pitting farmers against a feed grain company and the federal government can continue, an Ontario Superior Court judge has decided. (CBC)

Did anyone notice how Harper kept going on about working with the other parties in a minority government. I think he was trying to play down the idea he's getting close to a majority or maybe that he is open to all ideas. As a matter of fact the news this morning is Harper is inching closer to a majority. I've got a question. On the financial chanel economists were asked what would change under Harper. They said he would allow bank mergers. Anybody know if its true. Being a capitalist I abhor any monopolies.

Sorry, I don`t feel that way about our Dictator in that corrupt place called Ottawa,( it`s a town not a Province MR Martin)) just for your information and all the clapping clones behind you.

You see I think he has finally flipped and needs to seek professional help before it is too late, the more we see and hear of this arrogant sarcastic francophone the more we want to see him,"OUT OF OUR LIVES" go and enjoy your ill gotten gains, in your beloved France perhaps?
