New York Times is reporting that South Korean businessman, Tongsun Park has been arrested on charges stemming from the United Nations oil-for-food investigation;
According to new charges unsealed yesterday, Mr. Park began working with an Iraqi-American businessman, Samir Vincent, as early as 1992 to represent the interests of Saddam Hussein's government in negotiations at the United Nations to set up the program. Mr. Park and Mr. Vincent met twice in 1993 with a high-ranking United Nations official, the criminal complaint says.[...]
The complaint says that Mr. Park never registered in Washington as a foreign agent. He is charged with acting as an unregistered agent, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. He will appear Monday before a federal magistrate in Houston, Mr. Garcia's office said.
The complaint says that Mr. Park was paid at least $2 million, most of it in cash, by the Iraqi government. Much of the cash was delivered to Mr. Park in New York in Iraqi diplomatic pouches, the complaint says.
Mr. Park and Mr. Vincent "understood," the complaint says, that some of the money Mr. Park received from Iraq was to be used to "take care" of the high-ranking United Nations official, who is not named in the court documents.
A draft congressional report has called for the investigation of Canadian Maurice Strong’s role in the United Nations Oil-for-Food program.[...]
Strong is a long-time advisor to both UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and to Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.
On Sept. 7, 2005 it was revealed by the Independent Inquiry into the Oil-for-Food scandal that Strong had received a $1-million cheque from North Korean lobbyist Tongsun Park for the acquisition of shares in Cordex Petroleum Inc.–a Maurice Strong company.
Cordex Petroleum was also on the listing of assets of Paul Martin in his declaration of assets while he was Minister of Finance.
The $1-million, invested in the now defunct Cordex by Tongsun Park, originated from the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
Mr. Stockwell Day (Okanagan—Coquihalla, CPC): Mr. Speaker, Canada's international reputation is a source of pride to Canadians. At a time when the possibility of a Canadian connection to the oil for food scandal is being raised, Maurice Strong, long-time friend and adviser to the Prime Minister, and co-investor in certain companies, has suddenly resigned from his position with the UN. Can the Prime Minister assure us that Canadians are not involved in the scandal surrounding the UN's oil for food program, yes or no?Hon. Pierre Pettigrew (Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, clearly the answer is no, they are not. We have noted the public statements by Mr. Strong concerning the nature of his dealings with Tongsun Park, in which he indicated that these were connected to his work relating to North Korea on behalf of the Secretary General of the UN. Mr. Strong said that he had had no connection with the oil for food program. He did, however, indicate that he was suspending his work in Korea until the situation is clarified. We do not have any independent information that would enable us to have a different opinion on this matter.

Is the UN a microcosm of the Librano sect, or is it the other way around?
It's about time this one unfolded - just in time for the last weeks of the election.
When all the dots are connected, maybe now the MSM in Canada will help the Canadian public understand the nature of the beast they have kept relecting since Trudeau, with only brief interruptions.
I feel nauseated every time I hear Dithers pontificate on the Canadian role on the world stage. What role would that be? Thief? Priest?
Posted by: Shaken at January 7, 2006 9:45 AMStrong investigated by the US government...imagine that...when crap this heavy usually happens to an\ seemingly untouchable networked international profiteering gangster, the US justice department seizes his US assets as proceeds of crime when he runs from prosecution....I suspect Strong will be hopping on a jet to his plush digs in either Ottawa or Bejing where he has citizenship status. Can you imagine the PMO embarassment over the US extridition proceedings as per our international reciprical agreements? I think the Powercor PMO will wisk him on the first flight to China to deal with this.
You should see the shit-eating grin on me just thinking about Moe eating rice the rest of his twisted life ;-)
I must admit some grudging respect for the arrested again Tongsun Park. In trouble in the 70's for odd financial dealings with members of congress he has now graduated to a bigger playing field. You would think by now that when Mr. Park approaches any sane bureaucrat would make the sign of the cross and hide under their desks till the Korean went away.
Posted by: Pat Patterson at January 7, 2006 9:54 AMI'm just an average working stiff, so I'm considered clueless by the Liberal Party of Canada. However, I'm sure that Paul Martin's association with Maurice Strong has some very inappropriate components. They're both slimey characters who are trying to gain power on the world stage. Paul Martin is only using Canada for that personal reason and could care less about our contry's welfare. For what it's worth, that's what I think!
Posted by: Bruce at January 7, 2006 10:31 AMGood one Kate, I posted some time ago concerning this transaction and MS being named in the oil for food scandal, along with Kofi Annan's son and with KA in no way being exonerated himself. This should paint a vivid picture of the Lie-beral philosophy of entitlement for those who are faithfull to whoever the party leader happens to be at the time. The Kyoto agreement is nothing more than a socialist ruse to steal more taxpayer dollars to the benefit of people like Strong, Martin and their followers.

Posted by: Robert at January 7, 2006 10:53 AMwhy are they on the privy council. because they are all related. this is a ruling family compact like Canada has always experienced. All eastern provinces have been run like that since inception--three to five money families and their backpocket politicians.
In PMPMs case its double incestuous. He pappy was a minister that piloted his kid into the Maurice Strong organization at the highest level--straight out of university.
Its all owed and payed back.

Brian Mulroney appointed 18 prominent Canadians to the Privy Council on Canada Day in 1992 in commemoration of Canada's 125th anniversary, and two more (the late W.O. Mitchell and Maurice Richard) later that year. The appointments were somewhat controversial and have yet to be repeated

Maurice Strong is deeply committed to Earth Worship. At his Earth Summit in 1992 in Rio he stated "We must therefore transform our attitudes and values, and adopt a renewed respect for the superior laws of Divine Nature." Later he guided the Kyoto accord to implement these “superior laws”. After the Earth Summit he led the Earth Council and drafted the Earth Charter
He might hang with his fellow dingbats in Costa Rica
"Mr. Strong uses the Earth Council, Toronto and University of Peace, Costa Rica, to propagate this new spiritual vision. Strong is the President and UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan is the Honourary President. Former CRTC head, Keith Spicer directs their Institute of Media. The University is funded by the Canadian Government, who provided $4.8 million dollars in 2001 for its handful of students."
"In the year 2000 he released the Charter by placing it in a replica of the Ark of the Covenant, his “Ark of Hope’ He then pronounced "The real goal of the Earth Charter, is that it will in fact become like the Ten Commandments."
(He had it hand lettered on Papyrus)

Posted by: richfisher at January 7, 2006 11:54 AMOil for food has other interesting tendrils with the Martin/Chretien connection.
As Kate posted January 4th the other connection is with the Desmarais family who is with the French oil company Total. Total had rights to very large oil holdings in Iraq that were arranged with Hussein. Hence, one speculates that a lot of the French opposition to the Iraq war came from this, and that Chretien/Martin followed along because of the family connection.

No, the CBC didn't cover it.So it never happened. I watched Fifth Estate last night, their next show is going to reveal the "real story behind the Mulroney/ Airbus scandal." And only 2 days ago PMPM bitched about people referring to Liberal malfeasance in 1995, "that was 1995!" he cried.
Next, expect the Liberals to mention John A. McDonald and the CPR scandal. I wonder if Stephen Harper was involved in that!?

Posted by: dog soldier at January 7, 2006 2:40 PMGod Bless President GW Bush for sending Mr. Bolton to the U.N. to mop up the oil for food mess in the UN with a wire brush. The oil-for-food program was a cozy little exchange of CASH to Saddam for cheap oil from Iraq. There was NO FOOD involved. Stupid Canadians had their tax money used by pmpm, moe Strong and the elitests of this nation (and other nations like France, Russia, Germany), to PAY For the cheap oil via the U.N. then re sell that oil, at a huge profit; to other nations not in the loop - U.S.A., Great Britan, Ireland, Australia, new nations est. after the Soviet Union collapse.....ironically, the members of the coalition of the willing!!! I knew that this criminal information would emerge when Mr. Bolton fired up his wire brush, and it makes me VERY happy. Why on EARTH would ANYONE with a grain of decency participate in supporting a monster like Saddam - for monetary benifits? Next question: Why would anyone with a grain of self worth allow someone else to get fabulously wealthy from using THEIR money (taxes) to indirectly support that monster (Sadam) through the 'money users' - usery has been a crime since the 14th Century, BTW - with no benifits to the financer(US _ taxpayers)? Did (Do) the MSM get $$$ kick backs? Why are they not connecting the dots then?
Now we know why Billy Boy (Clinton) didn't invade the domain of Saddam and we know why some people in the U.S. government DID NOT want Mr. Bolton sent in to 'clean up'.
The GOOD just won another round.
Thanks again Kate - and Thank-you for the mention of Stockwell Day , he was the SINGLE M.P. that had the courage to bring up the NAME of Maurice Strong in the H. of C. MORE than once. Moe Stong was once taboo and people like Kate, Stockwell Day, The Captain at Captain's Quarters, Angry in the GWN, President Bush, and foreign websides blew the dirty little 'mo' secret sky high. Do any of the coherts of Mo and his ilk fear wood choppers? As in 'reap what you sew?
I think Mr. Strong has left a path of destruction where ever he has gone and that there is enough to fill a book on it when all is said and done. For instance it would be interesting to review Mr. Strong's role at Ontario Hydro that has left the province with the legacy it now has.

CSL has a dark history of polluting Canadian waters
OTTAWA – Paul Martin ran against his record on the environment today. Not only does his plane pollute, his former shipping company has been dumping and spilling for years. So what is the environmental record of Canada Steamship Lines?
Dumping in Great Lakes
While Paul Martin was at the helm of CSL, his ships routinely dumped iron ore pellets into the Great Lakes. CSL staff was tasked with cleaning the hull of the ship, including dumping leftover iron ore pellets into the Lakes – often at night to avoid being seen. During his years working for Canada Steamship Lines (CSL) aboard carriers including the CSL Tadoussac, Chief Engineer Jim Macdonald witnessed the dumping of an estimated 20 tonnes of iron ore pellets each and every voyage. (This Magazine, Sep.-Oct., 2005).
Oil Slicks at Sea
In March 2002, a CSL ship received the largest fine ever issued for ship based pollution in Canadian waters. The CSL Atlas, a 12-year-old, 41,000 tonne ship (registered in the Bahamas), was intercepted 80 miles south of Halifax with an oil slick 22 nautical miles long and fifteen meters wide. Six moths later, CSL pleaded guilty and was fined $125,000. According to government inspectors, “There was no evidence that the offender took any precautions to avoid the offence. On the contrary… an inference can be made that the offender attempted to cover-up the offence by providing false information… It can be assumed that the offender obtained significant material gains by choosing not to properly maintain the pollution prevention equipment on board the CSL Atlas” (Transport Canada/Marine Safety, Report of Senior Marine Inspector, ATI documentation).
Under Paul Martin, Canada’s marine life will clearly have to “fend for itself”.

Strong explained: "Licences to have babies incidentally is something that I got in trouble for some years ago for suggesting even in Canada that this might be necessary at some point, at least some restriction on the right to have a child."
But, if the world didn't follow his instructions - if governments didn't heed the warnings of the doomsayers - then "this is one of the possible courses that society would have to seriously consider." Strong himself has five children.
[...]
He told Maclean's magazine in 1976 that he was "a socialist in ideology, a capitalist in methodology."
The Librano two-rule ethos streaming from its source... one set of rules for the elite, another for everybody else. Entitled to preferential treatment by society - because, they are enlightened, they are superior. They know what's best for us, and the rest of the world too.
Arrogance in the supreme. They disgrace Canada.
Posted by: Shaken at January 7, 2006 10:33 PM“...For instance it would be interesting to review Mr. Strong's role at Ontario Hydro that has left the province with the legacy it now has...”
The legacy issues with Ontario Hydro/OPG began well before Strong was parachuted in, and well after his departure. OPG is just another crown corporation run by an old boy's club mentality from the top of the management food chain down to the union shop floor. There have been enough reports over the decades outlining all the problems with cost over-runs, the poor management, the culture of entitlement, the nepotism, all the while hefty pay packages & bonuses continue to be paid to management, and the alarming increase in the number of it's employees earning $100,000.
methinks that Alberta can get ready to send more money down east via a carbon tax disguised in the kimono of kyoto.
