Things have been so busy here that I nearly forgot to announce the "winners" of the Fill In The Blank Conservative contest.
To review - it all started with a comment by JulieM:
Okay, this is my first post here but that reminds me of the 2000 elections (I'm an American). I'm one of those "broken glass" Republicans who would crawl through broken glass (the pundits said) to vote against the Clintons.Maybe someone can come up with some witty Canadian equivalent, perhaps "broken snow plow Conservatives," or "dead battery Conservatives," or, "Where in the #*@( are my mitts Conservatives."
So based on a mathematical equation specifically formulated to produce a purely subjective result:
3rd place;
"Brass Monkey Conservative" - "Brian"
2nd - (and readers choice) ;
"40 Below Conservative" - "Fred"
And the winner is!
"Damn the Tim's! Where's the polling booth? Conservative" - "Alan"
And no contest is complete without an Honourable Mention in the Most Understated Category;
"Actually-voting Conservative" - Stephen J.
Thanks everyone!

Dam, kate, you break me up!!
I love your scientific formula......etc
Are you sure there is no latent liberal tendencies in you, lol?
thnx Kate . . it was a lotta fun.
I had a good laugh at all the lead-lines . . . lotsa ammunition for the campaign trail.

Posted by: rebarbarian at December 20, 2005 9:09 PMDoes the 40 Below Conservative have a heater in his truck? Just wondering...
(Ontario readers ask a westerner about the Rodeo song)
Posted by: Texas Canuck at December 20, 2005 9:58 PMThanks to Fred. I hate to disagree with you Kate but having worked on a cracking tower at -40 in Ft. Mucmuc years ago I take pride in now calling myself a 40 Below Conservative.
Posted by: Antenor at December 20, 2005 9:59 PMok folks, Kate's decision stands - I agree.
Just so you know - I grew up in Ontario/Ottawa, I have lived all across the country, coast to coast to coast, at various times, doing various jobs including a few years in the Arctic where "40 below" was a warm day. I am currently - and forever more - a Vancouver boy ( I now have gills, webbed toes etc) but I haven't forgotten my frozen roots -6o wasn't unusual in my Arctic days. I have done my fair share of "winter camping"- well that's not what the Army called it in Gagetown but I digress.
The Tims lead line works for me . . . I am happy camper at 2nd place
Lets focus on the election, one calm, articulate voter at a time standing up for CANADA, not the Liberal party's Canada OUR CANADA, where honesty prevails, where we respect honest citizens and punish criminals, not the NDP's Canada where everyone's a victim and nobody can dream to get ahead.
I have travelled/worked overseas in some places that would make you weep - there ain't no place better than here but we need to fight to keep it good, honest, productive and prospering.
Be calm, be articulate, be logical . . . its what SDA is doing and making a difference. Follow the leader . . .
Cheers . . . Fred
Posted by: Fred at December 20, 2005 10:21 PMWell, waddya know! I'm pleased that my suggestion was chosen. I like the 40 below one too, but it only works in winter elections. Granted this is a winter election, but the next one will be...
Long Live "Damn the Tim's Tories"! Get out there and vote!!!
Alan

Posted by: kelly at December 20, 2005 10:31 PMSome weather data about Ottawa:
-Since 1925 Ottawa has never recorded a single day of -40 degree Celcius weather, the coldest day ever being -38.9 on December 29 1933.
-Minus thirty weather is extremely rare in Ottawa. There are on average 0.67 days a year where the daily low is -30 or colder, 18.9 days of -20 or below, and 67.9 of -10 or below.
-In January, it is almost twice as likely (0.97 days) that the daily minimum is greater than zero than it is (0.5 days) to be below 30.
