Monte Solberg: Live BloggingThe Vote

As he did this spring, Monte Solberg is liveblogging the non-confidence vote via blackberry.

The galleries are jammed in anticipation of the vote. A Liberal backbencher, Larry Bagnell is speaking, but no one is listening.

Stephen Fletcher just stopped by to chat and wish a few of us a Merry Christmas. A good man.

I see many staffers, spouses, senators, and a billion others representing a lot of different groups. All with a ringside seat to history. More later.

In an after vote update, Monte mentions that ailing Conservative MP Darrel Stinson drove from Vernon BC to make the vote, as his health did not permit flying.

Oh, Canada. from Little Miss Attila
The Canadian government just collapsed; there will be new elections in January. I guess they'd like non-corrupt leaders for the new year, and who can blame them? But it still feels shocking. Thank goodness, though, that there are ways to... [Read More]

As I watch the Liberals cheer wildly as parliament, for the first time in a century, declares in a pure non-confidence vote that the they have lost the right to govern, which non confidence stemmed from perhaps the worst political scandals in our history, I can't help but think how representative their final act was of their term in office.

An act, completely devoid of bona fides, nothing more nothing less.

Posted by: jeff at November 28, 2005 7:16 PM

I think that many of the Libs might be secretly relieved to have been put out of their misery.

Posted by: Linda at November 28, 2005 7:38 PM

Too bad the Liberals can't even put up as good a game as the Alouettes, who deserve praise for their fine play in the greatest football game ever last night.

Instead, the Liberals buy off the referee, causing grevious damage to all the fans and citizens of Canada. If they were a football league, instead of the owners of the Canada Mint, they would be out of business by now.

After all, if they didn't get the suitcases full of cash from organized crime, then they must have stole it from the Mint. You can't get that kind of cash from a bank.

The government hs been brought down! This is a great day for Canadians!

I feel like I am at sporting event! All I want to sing is: Nan! Nan! Nan! Nan! Hey! Hey! Hey! Good Bye!
Congradulations to Mr. Harper in bring down the Liberals. I can say there was a lot of the Liberals I was Booing during the vote!
Mr. Darrel Stinson, there is one classy, proud Canadian. I am sure that if this was the last thing that he ever did, it was to be in the House of Commons to vote out the Liberal's. This man will always have my "heart" vote. He drove across Canada to vote after having his bladder removed. If this man does not send a message to the rest of Canada, how important that is it to get rid of the Liberal's (and may I say at a cost to his health!)nothing will. All my best wishes to MP Darrel Stison and his family.
Mr. Harper lets get on with a positive campaign, it's time for a change! Yeah!

Posted by: Mary at November 28, 2005 7:57 PM

Great day for Canada.

Excellent speech by Harper. He seems to understand what needs to be done to win this election.

May the Liberals rot.

Posted by: FreeThinker at November 28, 2005 8:07 PM

Yes, but also remember that politics is not sport, Canada is not the same as football. And, as far we know, there has been no suggestion that either the Eskimos or the Alouettes have availed themselves of the services of organized crime to carry out their counterpunctional strategy and tactics, unlike the Liberal Party.

As I see it you have three choices: crooks, communists, or the Conservative Party of Canada. It's your choice.

Posted by: Vitruvius at November 28, 2005 8:13 PM

Kudos to Mr. Stinson; a man's man.

Kudos to Stephen Harper, the next Prime Minister of Canada.

On to victory at the polls.

Vote Conservative.

BTW, many first-time commenters? Blog on.

I just decorated my libranos poster with garland and lights in my front window. Who says Christmas and elections don't mix!

Posted by: L Wilke at November 28, 2005 8:57 PM

This is shaping up to be the bestest Christmas
ever! I want nothing more for Christmas than to see the stupid smirk wiped off of all the liberal faces on my street

Posted by: steeel at November 28, 2005 9:03 PM

Note, Wilke, that if you spend more than five hundred dollars on such a Christmas display, during an election, then you are supposed to register as lobbyist with State Canada, unless of course you are a card-carrying Liberal or a columnist for the Globe and Mail.

It's still a bit early for me, but when the time comes I'll be going with this: http://hdelboy.club.fr/creche.jpg and this:

God rest ye merry, gentlemen,
Let nothing you dismay.
Remember Christ our saviour
Was born on Christmas Day
To save us all from satan's power
when we have gone astray.
Oh good tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy.
Oh good tidings of comfort and joy.

Canada has gone astray. Perhaps Christmas can help.

Posted by: Vitruvius at November 28, 2005 9:14 PM

Note: Globe and Mail Poll: Do you think the up coming election is really necessary? Yes or No?

Posted by: Mary at November 28, 2005 9:28 PM

I'm a "Yank" but my distant NS Tory kin are over the moon. I've gotten more email from them in the last five hours then they've sent all year.

Just remember that the rattler is still dangerous until the head is cut off and buried.

Posted by: Hungry Valley at November 28, 2005 9:32 PM

Great one, Hungry!

I am glad they have been brought down, but I am not sure that we won't wind up again with a Librano$ minority government. Hope it won't be so!

This may or may not be telling, but David Dingbat did not appear before the Commons Committee today as he was supposed to. Called 45 minutes before and cancelled. MPs pissed apparently. Wonder if he was told not to bother?

Posted by: Iron Lady at November 28, 2005 9:46 PM

Mary,

Love it. Globe and Mail (otherwise known as junk mail) is about as keen pollwriters as Calvert's friends. "Do you think..." "How does it feel..." "Woud you like..." Geesh, shallow.

Do I think the election is necessary. Yes. Do I think Sask deserve a fair energy accord. Yes. How does it feel to win a new Ford. Great. Now, you fabulous poll writers, let's put aside the lame polls, and do something that really creates reader participation.

Posted by: Altruistic at November 28, 2005 9:54 PM

This election seemes to have cranked the wit of Conservative MPs up to a new level.

Mckay was trying hard not to laugh when he was sitting beside Maclellan, and she called down the "PROGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES"... Right in Mckay's face too(Someone get the video from CBC Newsworld)! How do you not laugh? Another example of some fine banter...

Solburg
"I wonder how Ralph Goodale is feeling right now. Not too sprightly either I bet. The income trust thing has gone from being a series of screw-ups to an exploding screw-up with shrapnel and fire."

Ahhhhhahaha!

Posted by: Knight of Good Mr. Iron Man at November 28, 2005 10:06 PM

Some other points to ponder.....
If MP Darrel Stinson can drive across Canada to vote what the Hell is wrong with the rest of the country? All the lame excuses about not wanting to vote in the winter. Bring on a snow storm, I will walk to vote!
There are a couple of Liberals MP's in BC that would be sweet to see go David Anderson and Ujjal Dosanjh. They never did sweet squat for BC when they were in provincial politics, they have just gotten bigger ego's.

Posted by: Mary at November 28, 2005 10:17 PM

The flakey pundits on the 'tube, have already announced that Paul Martin is going to remind the public of his 'record'. (They didn't say Criminal Record).

Posted by: dave at November 28, 2005 10:20 PM

Don't get too cocky now, my Canuck acquaintances.

True story: My father was running for county commish in 1994 & 1998. Everybody liked him and thought he was a shoo-in (both times), but too many thought they didn't need to bother to vote. The other guy and gal got in by close margins. Both times.

Posted by: Josef at November 28, 2005 10:22 PM

Josef, let them have their excitement.
The trap is sprung.

Posted by: steve not in ontario at November 28, 2005 10:25 PM

The trap is sprung only for the confederation, as it should be under these conditions. There is no use supporting any distopic endeavour, even while times are still good. Or at least, history would suggest otherwise.

Posted by: Vitruvius at November 28, 2005 10:44 PM

This is to weird.... Globe and Mail poll, 1 hour later Poll 1000 more votes still sitting at 42% to 58%. Maybe it's just the flag thing but when a poll has that many votes in 1 hour and the %'s don't change, it makes you say hmmmmmm????

Posted by: Mary at November 28, 2005 10:45 PM

I was so excited to finally see action in the House. I was cheering more loudly tonight than during the Cup game yesterday.

Now, if only all of us, that are extremely excited and energized by this action of democracy in progress, go out and help all of our CPC candidates and thump the pavement, we might actually get the real message across and not the message the media will try to spread for the next 50+ days.

Let's get 'er done!

Posted by: Nat at November 28, 2005 11:18 PM

Thanks for the early Christmas present! Let me vote; good bye Liberals.

Posted by: Polly at November 28, 2005 11:28 PM

Vitruvius...how could it be otherwise?

Campaigns conducted through sound-bites rather than reason, the influence of money, the pursuit of self-interest rather than the good of us all, and political patronage for the political support of corporations.

Democracy and the vote in a global age is an illusion.
An entertainment.
Are you an architect?

Posted by: steve not in ontario at November 28, 2005 11:42 PM

I'm saying keep calm, keep cool, keep collected and DO NOT ASSUME A THING. You deserve to win - and I am sitting on something that'll help blow Paul Martini right open...

BUT... THE ONLY POLL THAT COUNTS IS ON ELECTION DAY, PERIOD. AND IT'S NOT ON A WEBSITE!

Posted by: Josef at November 28, 2005 11:45 PM

Democracy is not an illusion, Steve NIO, it is a consruction. It will be judged, over time, in terms of its robustness. In its favour: the state serves the citizen, rather than the King owning the citizens. Against its favor: tyranny of the majority.

As the original Vitruvius wrote in De Architectura, (if I may paraphrase) the measures of a good structure are utilitas, firmitas, and venusitas, or as we would say, utility, firmness, and beauty. By such measures shall humans ever weigh the structures we construct, including the Dominion of Canada.

Posted by: Vitruvius at November 28, 2005 11:58 PM

The entire country (outside of Toronto, whose hands are still over its collective ears) now knows: the emperor has no clothes. Paul Martin is a fraud. Everything he says rings hollow, and you can even see it on his face when he speaks - even he knows the gig is up. The Libs will be decimated everywhere outside the 416; and the Cons and Dippers will even pick up a couple seats each in the Megacity. It'll be a strong Conservative minority, with an election to try for a majority by 2007.

Posted by: NCF TO at November 29, 2005 12:02 AM

Why does Martin keep talking about that Neo guy from the Matrix movies?

Posted by: David Kyle at November 29, 2005 12:15 AM

It's a Festivas miracle! On the day the government falls, I receive notification to appear before a judge to take the oath and become a Canadian citizen. Then, it's off to register as a voter before Jan 23. Needless to say, I won't be voting for the Libranos.

What a great day!

Posted by: MisterPundut at November 29, 2005 12:30 AM

Typical CBC leading off with poll showing the Liberals ahead. For the duration, that is the last time I watch any news. I'll get all my updates on this blog so keep up the good work with your posts. At 77, I have to watch the old b.p.
Our neck of the Ont. woods voted out our Liberal MP last election so am confident we'll be onside again. Get with it, rest of Ontario - vote for good, honest government.

Posted by: gellen at November 29, 2005 12:53 AM

It's amazing to sees Conservatives riled up and rearing to go. Compare that to the glummies who are on the Liberal's side who don't want an election because it's cold.
This is the election Canada learns what a fine man Mr. Harper is.

Posted by: NorthBayTrapper at November 29, 2005 1:41 AM

Congratulations Stephen Harper and all of the Conservative M.P.s. I ,like you Mary, would especially like to mention Mr. Darrel Stinson, I did not know that he drove all the way from Vernon to vote. Let his example be kept in our hearts and minds; get off the warm couch Conservatives! We do not have a bunch of nincompoop nobodies to steal from like the Liberanos do - no comfy rug awaits us at the end of the trail if the gangsters get re elected. (Massive tax audits for all of us, right after the election).

Posted by: Jema54 at November 29, 2005 2:24 AM

When speaking of Liberals in BC you'd like to see turfed, don't forget Hedy (crosses are burning as we speak) Fry. Another useless appendage.

Out! Out! Damned Spot!

Posted by: Mike at November 29, 2005 8:27 AM

Its up too Ontairo now...this is where Harper must get it across.

Posted by: craig at November 29, 2005 8:48 AM

In addition to the emotion and the excitement last night, the vote really was an historical event for many reasons. The reaction after the Commons let-out was very telling - and hopefully Canadians will pick up on what is real and what is important. Martin's speech as compared to Mr. Harper's speech. Martin's shrill name-calling. I wanted to refer to Stephen Harper as Prime Minister right away. It re-emphasized for me how embarassed Canadians should be that Prime Minister Martin represents us internationally. Martin literally screeching maniacly to his caucus: "Hold Hands!!! Everybody! Hold Hands!!!" I wondered if the White Coats would show. The dignified and respectful way all Opposition members responded quietly when the vote was finished. Liberal Dr. Carolyn Bennett being interviewed in the Hall "In my riding whenever Stephen Harper's name is mentioned there's a visible shudder!" I wouldn't want her as my doctor if that's how she diagnoses. She's in my riding and hopefully she'll go back to private practice. Ontario needs more doctors, right? Go Peter Kent! Stand Up for Change/Stand Up for Canada...It's time.

Posted by: Ann at November 29, 2005 9:28 AM

Paul Martin is a tired, old man. When I see him staring into space through his watery, droopy, eyes, I just shiver. He looks like he's already been embalmed!!! The Conservative leader, in contrast looks cool, calm, and collected, (and pretty handsome also, if you ask me).
