Reader Tips, Quick Links

This is kind of cute.

Lots of comments today about the "BOOOOOOOOO" heard round B.C. Place Stadium.

With all the yackity yack about the "absurdity" of linking the LIberal Party with organized crime (however you choose to define it) this link offers a few archived articles on the topic, including this quote from September 2000;

"For the first time in this country, we are seeing signs of criminal organizations that are so sophisticated that they actually are focusing on destabilizing certain aspects of our society," said Commissioner Zaccardelli. The commissioner is a 30-year veteran of the RCMP who was previously the force's deputy commissioner in charge of the fight against organized crime.

"That's a real threat to us. There are criminal organizations that target this destabilization of our parliamentary system."

Well, I guess this helps explain why Liberal bloggers continue to struggle for both traffic and influence...

However, on-line advertising may play less of a role in this election. With Internet ad sales booming right now, the home pages of some web portals, such as Yahoo Canada, are being booked months in advance, ad buyers say.

Meanwhile, the Liberals are putting less of a focus on getting their message out through political blogs in this campaign. "That was a factor in the last election and, frankly, of limited value," Mr. MacKinnon said. "We think it's overvalued and overrated. What you have there is the most opinionated people in the country. So you're not changing any minds."

I guess he doesn't know about the phone call I got last week...

Add your own in the comments.

Good story in the (hardly conservative) Christian Science Monitor:

"The Iraq story: how troops see it"
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/1128/p01s02-usmi.html

Excerpt:

'Yet the Iraq of Corporal Mayer's memory is not solely a place of death and loss. It is also a place of hope. It is the hope of the town of Hit, which he saw transform from an insurgent stronghold to a place where kids played on Marine trucks. It is the hope of villagers who whispered where roadside bombs were hidden. But most of all, it is the hope he saw in a young Iraqi girl who loved pens and Oreo cookies.

Like many soldiers and marines returning from Iraq, Mayer looks at the bleak portrayal of the war at home with perplexity - if not annoyance. It is a perception gap that has put the military and media at odds, as troops complain that the media care only about death tolls, while the media counter that their job is to look at the broader picture, not through the soda straw of troops' individual experiences.

Yet as perceptions about Iraq have neared a tipping point in Congress, some soldiers and marines worry that their own stories are being lost in the cacophony of terror and fear. They acknowledge that their experience is just that - one person's experience in one corner of a war-torn country. Yet amid the terrible scenes of reckless hate and lives lost, many members of one of the hardest-hit units insist that they saw at least the spark of progress.'

We truly need to see more of those positive sides to the war if common citizens are to make a fair opinion of the whole war.

Liberals Slap Etobicoke-Lakeshore Voters In Face - Again:

"In the 1993 election, Jean Chrétien short-circuited the candidacy of Dan McCash in the Toronto riding of Etobicoke–Lakeshore.

McCash was at the time National Coordinator of Liberals for Life and was mounting a vigorous challenge for the nomination. McCash’s campaign ended when the Liberal leader appointed Jean Augustine as the party’s candidate in the riding.

The Liberal party leadership also took steps to ensure the easy renomination of their incumbents in 1993, and again in 1997. Chrétien let it be known that he wanted his incumbents re-nominated without facing any opposition. When potential opponents did emerge, the party went to great lengths to ensure that its incumbents prevailed.

This is evident in the case of MP Len Hopkins in the riding of Renfrew–Nipissing–Pembroke in the 1993 election. Hopkins was facing substantial opposition to his renomination from local party activists. In order to ensure his leader’s desired outcome, Ontario (Liberal)campaign chair David Smith opened and closed nominations for the riding on the same day. He did this from his Toronto office without giving notification to the local association until 30 minutes after nominations closed. Hopkins was the only candidate made aware that nominations were being accepted, and thus was acclaimed."

That is still going on- in today's National Post, we read that members of the Etobicoke-Lakeshore Liberal riding association have refused to accept Michael Ignatieff as their shoo-in cantidate, and they are now picketing the Liberal Party office in downtown Toronto! Bwahahahahaha!

U.S. Marine Captain Nate Fick: "Success has a thousand fathers, Wolf. And I think it's important to realize, though, that dissent at home or political opposition at home, in my view, doesn't hurt the troops.

I find that I get along much better with people whose political views may be very different than mine so long as they're engaged and they care.

And when I saw Congressman Murtha at his press conference the other day and I saw the tears in his eyes, I thought that's a Marine officer I would have been honored to serve under because he cared.

The people who bother me and who I think don't resonate so well with troops on the ground are the apathetic middle who go through daily life forgetting that we even have 180,000 Americans on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq.

So, my parting word would be that we must remember that every single day."
One could almost argue that the war was won on about April 9 or 10 2003, and it's been steadily lost ever since.

"A federal MP is already drafting a controversial law sought by a family mourning the death of a pregnant woman - one that would allow police to lay murder charges for the death of an unborn child."

Well, looks like the election will be over before it starts.

This confirms my supsicion that most politicians are just plain dumb. I mean what got into this fool. Most vosters who are scared of Harper are scared because he might open up the abortion thing. So what does this hairbrained CPC MP do, he plans to introduce a bill that will affect that issue.

Just like the BC MLA's voting themself a raise this guy reinforces my thought that most politicians are "one brick short of a load"

CBC News has just released a poll.
http://tinyurl.com/7c7vc

Shows pretty much the same as other recent polls. But right at the bottom of the story, I just had to laugh when I saw this:

The politicians may take some solace in one of the poll's findings: Canadians don't seem to be concerned that they'll be facing a Christmas election. Sixty-two per cent of those asked said it's not important that the holiday season is being interrupted by an election campaign.

Hi kelly,

The David Smith referred to is none other than Senator David Smith, a former Trudeau cabinet minister. His wife, Ontario Chief Justice Heather Smith sits on the Superior Gay Agenda Court of Ontario.

His brother is the pastor of the church I used to attend, and being the one who lobbied for the inclusion of God in the constitution, I thought that David Smith at least stood for some kind of ethics. I thought wrong.

Police caught 'crazies' with bombs at G8 protest, papers show
Would-be bombers 'wanting to kill,' stopped at city limit

Mohammed Adam, The Ottawa Citizen
Published: Tuesday, November 29, 2005

The Ottawa and Ontario Provincial police forces prevented "crazies" who intended to kill people from smuggling bombs into the capital during the G8 demonstrations three years ago, documents obtained by the Citizen say.

The documents, part of hundreds of pages of police emergency plans, reports and debriefing notes on the 2002 G8 summit, provide a rare window into how the police handled the demonstrations.

In one debriefing note titled "Positive issues and comments," the police talk about a major threat that was averted, but never made public.

"It was interesting to know that bombs were stopped at city borders," the heavily censored document said.

"Crazies wanting to kill, who were headed to Ottawa were stopped at city borders. ... No mention of these situations were ever released to the media. OPP were able to eliminate potential threats as part of the joint effort team." >>> more

Hey Maz2, Jamie Graham, appointed by the former mayor Larry Campbell-who's been appointed to the senate by Paul Martin, asks the RCMP to now look into the actions of the Vancouver Mayor elect-Sam Sullivan, Sam having knocked off Christie Clarke(Paul Martin supporter) for the NPA mayoral candidacy. The timing seems very suspicious to me with the federal election now called and PMPM without a Liberal mouthpiece for a mayor in Vancouver. Jim Green by the way is an asshole and I'm glad he suffered the bitter agony of defeat.

Bruce, we give credit to those Librano$; they have earned it ( & the crew at Western Standard ). Speaking of Librano$, is this a label for the scary AdScam Martin/Chretien gang: "Librano$$$$$$$ ..."?

Wretchard has this to say on "labels" & voting: This is a clue as to why some Canucks find you-know-who "scary"... truth hurts... >>>>

People buy on the basis of labels; people vote on the basis of labels, and sometimes they are misled. The power of labels creates an opportunity for hucksters to substitute fiction for reality, as anyone who has ever bought a Rolex made in Pakistan knows. For years the United Nations presented itself as a saintly organization bent on saving the whales when it wasn't preserving world peace. Reality fell somewhat short of this ideal, and the process of disillusionment is always painful to watch. In a way, even those who didn't believe in the fake labels can feel a sense of loss at watching the hope, and then the belief fade from the faces of those who have been suckered. The truth will set you free; but first it will make you miserable.
