Reader Tips Please: Tracking the "Culture of Entitlement"

I'm gathering info on cases of Liberal government patronage, etc from the post-Chretien Librano era to present. I know some of you have a lot of this tucked away or covered on your own sites. Drop them in the comments or email to me privately, if you have the chance.

Thanks.

Note: Please reread this post, and refrain from posting off topic chatter.

Don, as I see it in Canada our biggest problem is that we don't have a screening process. Positions are given to whoever the PM (or Premier wants). Hence you get Michaelle Jean who wasn't properly "screened". And you get Don Getty appointing his barber to head the Alberta Gaming Commision.

Here's one of PMPM's patronage appointments:

Nice appointment if you can get it. Rai Sahi, chief executive of Morguard REIT, has been named to the board of Canadian Broadcasting Corp. The appointment generated a few shots on Parliament Hill this week. It prompted one Tory to remark: "Liberal patronage and cronyism has hit a new low. Who is that? A close personal friend of the Prime Minister, a former business associate of Canada Steamship Lines, a donor to the Liberal Party who owns the building the CBC leases as its head office in Ottawa. One would think it was enough that he gets the rent cheque from the CBC every month." One of Mr. Sahi's companies -- he also owns Morguard Corp. -- owns the building the CBC leases in Ottawa.

somewhere out there must be a list of all the agencies, commissions etc that the PM appoints people to - then if there is away to cross ref the names of the appointed liberal fartcatchers against Liberal party donors/members . . .

In the Ding-Dongwall scam I looked at the Mint's BoD it was all life-long liberal porkers & contributors - with the maritimes & Quebec over represented an dnot one from west of the Ottawa river.

I'd bet all the rest of the Boards & commissions are the same . . stuffed to the rafters with Liberal party hacks

Resign Shapiro; resign AdScam CSL Martin, now. Shapiro does not deserve three strikes and out. Out now, Shapiro; out CSL AdScam Martin. In the name of Canadians, go.

Brian Mulroney once said that "Crown Corporations are important instruments of national policy". He was correct then, and still is now. During the election in 1984 the Tories vowed to privatize PetroCanada and Air Canada, to use just 2 examples. Upon taking office, the boards of these 2 crown corps. were stacked with Liberals who would not implement the privatization policy for which Canadians had voted, therefore, they were replaced with people who would, mostly Tories. This was, and is, good public policy, when not abused.

There are approximately 3000 appointments made by the federal government every year, from Senators and judges right down to wharfingers and members of the Freshwater Fish Marketing Board. The vast majority of these appointments go directly through the PMO. This has been going on since confederation and has generally been accepted by the Canadian public. All appointees are screened through the RCMP, CSIS, and even Interpol as to their suitability vis-a-vis criminal behaviour. It is very rare for someone to get through the process with any sort of criminal past. So what we have is appointees getting in trouble after they are appointed, hence the "culture of entitlement", individuals abusing their positions for personal gain.

It seems that the longer a particular government is in power, the more prevalent abuse becomes. There is, however, a process to get rid of these people, it is called an election. If the Tories do get in, I would be very disappointed if they did not replace those individuals holding positions on boards and agencies to reflect the will of the people who elect them. It makes good sense no matter what party is brought to power. Lest I sound too generous to the Liberals, I should state that I believe there is currently a level of corruption in our government never seen before in history, and it is time for them to go, along with all their patronage buddies.

Gotta go take my son to hockey (somethign that really matters)! Check back with you later.

Cut the crap, Don. This is a post that made a specific request that didn't include off-topic chatboard activity.

Now, take your whining elsewhere.

I just enjoy playing with your silly minions, Kate. They don't discuss anything, just bleat like the pathetic sheep in "Animal Farm."

http://www.cbc.ca/manitoba/story/mb_harvard20040507.html

"Liberal MP John Harvard has been named Manitoba's 23rd lieutenant-governor – just one day after stepping aside to give Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray a shot at federal politics.

Harvard announced Thursday that he will not seek re-election in the riding of Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia. On Friday, Mayor Murray confirmed speculation that he would run federally in the riding.

May 7, 2004: It's official: Murray to run federally

Friday, the Prime Minister's office formally announced that Harvard will become the Queen's representative in Manitoba."

Not to worry, Glen got another job even if he failed to win a seat.

"Mr. James Bezan (Selkirk—Interlake, CPC): Madam Speaker, I want to return to a question I originally raised on February 18 concerning the appointment of Mr. Glen Murray to the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.

The key issue is that the government has completely ignored its own promise. The Prime Minister promised that he would put an end to the politics of cronyism. He said that he would make sure that it would no longer be about who one knew in the PMO. Yet we are still at the point where failed Liberal candidates are getting the plum patronage jobs with the government.

In Mr. Murray's case, the individual is not qualified for the job"........

..."The real problem is that Mr. Murray's appointment was rejected by the Standing Committee on the Environment. We had a debate in the House of Commons and the House rejected Mr. Murray as the candidate for chairman of the round table. Unfortunately, the Prime Minister has gone ahead with having Mr. Murray serve as chairman of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy."

"Mr. Monte Solberg (Medicine Hat, CPC): Mr. Speaker, the Liberal government seems to have trouble figuring out where the government ends and where the Liberal Party begins.

Liberal Party campaign manager, David Herle, received an untendered contract to write the Liberal Party platform that was then tarted up and called an economic update."

"David L. Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills-Grasslands, is infuriated by the Canadian Wheat Board’s (CWB) latest tactic to align itself as closely as possible to this Liberal Cabinet. The CWB has retained the services of a lobby firm that is closely connected to Paul Martin and this Liberal government. This information came to light when Members of Parliament received invitations to meet with representatives from the CWB. Global Public Affairs has been hired by the CWB to assist in its efforts to lobby the government.

“The CWB has consistently been spending more and more of farmers’ money to ingratiate itself with the current Liberal Cabinet,” stated Anderson. “David Herle, Paul Martin’s former campaign chair, has been attending CWB Board of Directors’ meetings. Reg Alcock’s former campaign manager, Avis Gray, is receiving a salary from the CWB as the Senior Advisor, Government Relations. Now, we see the CWB hiring a lobby firm, Global Public Affairs, chock full of former employees from the Prime Minister’s Office and various Liberal Ministerial offices,” said Anderson."

Gets depressing bringing this stuff out, doesn't it!

Bob Rae, Liberal leader aspirant, is recommending an inquiry into Air India tomorrow at a news conference. Wouldn't have anything to do with wooing back disenchanted family members of the victims prior to an election, now would it?

All these great Canadian institutions sound pretty stupid when you get right down to it. So instead of sweating about the relative merits of the overwhelmingly useless and vastly overpaid people who are appointed to preside over them, why don't we just chuck 'em?

Don, what Librano appointment did you get?

Posted by: test at November 22, 2005 11:32 PM

Sorry test, I was never in it for the appointments. Besides, with the relationship I have with Martin you're far more likely to get to the Senate before I do.
