Thanks for that very informative link. After reading it I e-mailed the page to two "soft" liberals, both are mothers, one in Ontario and one in Nova Scotia. Hopefully this kind of info will change their vote.

Sorry, Plato, but you're wrong.

The Post ranked Don Cherry as Canada's #1 "public intellectual", and it's Cherry's second shot at recognized Canuck greatness (voted #7 Greatest Canadian by Ministry of Truth/CBC survey; oddly, Gretzky was only rated #10).

Does anybody else think we make fools of ourselves with this archetypal self-induced hockey monomania? Really, now.

On a better note, though: the National Post ranked Mark Steyn as Canada's #2 public intellectual. Perhaps next year Mark will sharpen his quill to vault past Don's credentials to take the #1 spot...

Why doesn't the MSM want to discuss this issue? There is no consensus amoung parents that we need universal (unionized) day care. MSM doesn't want to discuss this issue because, like others, it doesn't fit in with their beliefs. It is an indication why MSM (G&M, Star, CBC, CTV) decides electionn issues, and slants them to their views. Another public empire/debacle in the making. Of course, anyone who doesn't adhere to their ideological view is some corporate/right wing Christian/Harper shill. When the Liberals don't get what they want, it's Harper's fault. How tiresome.

Does all this mean that the Liberals have a hidden agenda to reengineer our society according to some esoteric, frighteningly bizarre leftist philosophy? It sounds like they have declared war on the traditional form of the family. No more mommy and daddy and kids. Seems the Liberals want the state to raise all offspring. Parental rights could be abolished. Children may be indoctrinated from birth in "Liberal" dogma. Paul Martin would be "God" or "Dear Leader". All will pledge their lives to defend "Liberal" ideals against all opponents. All will speak only when spoken to. Question orders and you die.

Just as it is in North Korea today.

I consider myself a conservative in nearly every sense, and as a father of three young daughters this affects me deeply.

I'm wondering if anyone here went forward and read the paper in its entirety? While I'm opposed to the ECEC theory as a whole, this paper does not, "make it clear that the �ideology of the family� is the problem which must be replaced by �a new order.", as argued by KidsFirstCanada.

I think KidsFirst is pulling a 'Liberal' strategy out of its bag and is fear mongering.

The paper is a summary of findings from a conference held in Sweden. In addition to presenting some core findings from the conference, the author editorializes these findings against what she has already studied (mostly in Scandinavia and Europe), and also presents limited perspective from non-socialized countries.

This is not a policy paper, but a preliminary study, probably looking for a research grant.

This paper is not worth much. In my opinion. KidsFirstCanada, an organization I certainly approve of, needs to choose its points of attack very carefully, because it will risk discrediting its perspective (a la Peter who cried wolf).

I couldn't find the paper in question, but when I typed "ideology" into the website's search engine, the most recent hit was to this paper (warning: do not read on a full stomach):

The gap between child care research and policy is growing in British Columbia (BC). While policy changes are what one would expect from the right-of-centre Liberal government, the gap runs contrary to its expressed commitment to the design of early childhood development policy on the basis of �science.� The BC child care domain thus provides a rich context in which to examine how ideology mediates the consumption of research in the political arena. This article argues that the government�s �choice� discourse facilitates the articulation of neoliberal principles in a rhetorically neutral way while casting doubt on scholarship that illuminates gender and class inequalities.

Right off the bat, looking at all the Google links, I'm thinking, wow, for a government funded child care outfit, they seem to be awfully concerned with ideology ... naw ... that's about what I expected.

From Neo-conservatism and child care services in Alberta: A case study:

Translation:

Bad rednecks! Bad! Bad! Hate children!

And Child care and the Social Union:

Government funded child care is all about removing greed from the marketplace, right? Err, maybe not:

I'd post more, but after reading a few bits and pieces of this drivel, and remembering that I paid for it all, and that its entire purpose is to make me pay even more for a service that I don't even need, well, I think I'm going to vomit.

The original source document, a presentation from a 2001 conference based on the author's research in Brazil, does not make any such statement. The "Kids First Canada" people have taken 2 separate paragraphs and cobbled them together to say what they want. Let this be a lesson in creative quoting.

Come, come, people, unknot those shorts. Surely it's not so far after our epic "SSM" debate to have forgotten the number one Lieberal dogma, so evident during that debate: "CHILDREN DON'T MATTER". In other words, there is generally no connection between what Lieberals say they'll do and what they'll actually try to implement. All of the profound tenets offered up by the likes of "kidsfirstcanada"-preferred child experts must therefore be taken with a grain of salt, just like Little Paul's admonishments that he'll reverse western alienation, eliminate the democratic deficient and figure out a way to make delicious donuts with no transfats.
