Yeah, cowboy, I noticed that too. This last year is the first time since I became interested in politics back in the early 80's that this whole "Canadians don't want a spring/ summer/ fall/ Christmas election (take your pick depending on present date)" has ever come up.

It's total bull. It is the Government that doesn't want an election; they can smell a Campbellesque rout coming.

There were 14 positive stories in the Globe and Mail on PM Paul Martin's Christmas bonus, including a front page that looked like a liberal love-in. The "mini-budget" coverage began with five positive stories, covering approximately 95% of the page and one negative column.

A large, flattering photo of Prime Minister Paul Martin covered half the page, just opposite a quarter page photo of Finance Minister Ralph Goodale. In the important left hand top corner is an article critical of Jack Layton for provoking an election on the eve of a first ministers' conference on the eve of an aboriginal conference.

Stephen Harper has his work cut out for him if he wants to become the next prime minister. Not only does he have to win over a public that has been repeatedly told he is "scary." But he has to fight the media bias that former newsman turned Conservative candidate Peter Kent has spoken out about.

Liberals may be many things, but stupid they're not. They've been working for months on a post-Gomery budget rollout that would eclipse AdScam spending with the promise of two chickens in every pot. Now, it looks as though they'll have a chance to deliver those chickens in an election document paid for by taxpayers.

Their work started last week with major financial transfers announced in the heart of Quebec. Further hints have surfaced about future spending initiatives written about by scribes hungry to be the first to report leaks.

Buried in the budget onslaught was another recalculation by the finance department on the surplus. The department is suggesting the money for this election run comes from about seven billion dollars in excess cash it did not expect nine months ago.

As usual, they under-reported to set the stage to overspend. The Liberal election machine is shredding any credibility left in the department of finance.

Either Ralph Goodale misled Canadians last February, when he promised to keep a tight rein on spending, or he's misleading them today, when reins are being loosened to grease a Grit election platform. Either way, the public deserves more than a simple regurgitation of finance department documents. >> via

Looks like Sheila has discovered integrity outside of Ottawa, not to mention commonsense. Could just be an axe to grind, of course. But still, Liberals usually will remain mute before they'll admit that their party is a lying, sleazy, corrupt regime. Even Carolyn Parrish (Don Martin in today's NP) is saying Tories could win simply because it's hard to get Liberal voters out at the best of times, never mind winter. Tories, however, will go through blizzards and ice storms to cast their ballots.
