I'd say the toilet and lino thingy is the cheaper option

Posted by: Dan at October 6, 2005 12:44 PM

Use TWO wax seals when you install the new commode. You may also want to run a thin bead of silicone around the entire base as well!

I don't think this was the kind of tip you were looking for, but I couln't resist!

Posted by: Eskimo at October 6, 2005 12:47 PM

Unless you live next door to Home Depot, you'll never finish both a lino and WC job in a single day. Heck, a single week may not be enough.

Before you even start, make sure the new toilet has the same base dimension (distance from the wall) as the old one.

Good link, Mark. We aren't all so soft and mushy. Many of us ascribe to Kennedy's "muscular liberalism". Over at Cerberus, I've been even more harshly critical of the extremist fundamentalist Muslim bigotry and hatred that is growing in the world than the extremist fundamentalist far-right Christian bigotry and hatred that is growing in the world. Their's is, after all, more dangerous even if the Christian right has far far more money, power and influence in the US (and therefore the world).

Some samples you might enjoy reading (including an excerpt from a Trudeau speech that indicates he probably would have taken no quarter from radical Muslims): here, here, and here.

Divorce threats aside, your guest needs a bathroom!

Posted by: Nancy at October 6, 2005 2:39 PM

The toilet base makes no diff, the centre of the floor flange will be 12" from the wall and that's where you put the T-bolts, plop down the WC and voila. Do the lino first. Half a day tops.

Posted by: kelly at October 6, 2005 2:44 PM

Make sure your toilet flange is aprox. 1/4" above the finished floor elevation. If not, you can buy extender rings. Doubling up wax rings will eventually just lead to rotted sub-floor.

Posted by: Steve in Ontario at October 6, 2005 3:03 PM

I can't understand why two wax seals would cause a leak, but sealing the fixture to the floor with a bead of silicone would hide a small leak, probably long enough for it to cause structural damage to the floor. In any case, you've probably finished by now.

TB: Elmasry of the CIC is such a sweetheart.

From Norman Spector's site (text not available online from Citiizen)
http://www.members.shaw.ca/nspector4/fed3.htm

The Ottawa Citizen: "Muslim cleric attacks foes of Shariah", by Lee Greenberg

'A controversial Islamic leader has accused moderate Muslims who campaigned against Shariah law in Ontario of "smearing Islam, ridiculing the Koran (and) badmouthing Muhammad," allegations some believe are tantamount to a death sentence.

In an open letter, Mohamed Elmasry, president of the Canadian Islamic Congress, argues he knows "of no Canadian Jew ... who would make a personal cause out of smearing Judaism. But it seems we Canadian Muslims are of a different breed."

He goes on to say: "For in the midst of our community, we have members who are bent upon smearing Islam, ridiculing the Koran, badmouthing Muhammad, or go about proclaiming that Shariah (Islamic law) is backward and discriminates against women."…

In an interview yesterday, Mr. Elmasry defended the statements, saying he was attempting to unify disparate elements within the Muslim community.

"If they have certain concerns, they should work with other Muslims instead of going public," he said. "What we're saying to our brothers and sisters is to be able to discuss these issues amongst ourselves, to resolve these issues, before launching a crusade against Shariah-based mediation and arbitration.

"I didn't accuse anybody. I wrote an article which is on our website comparing secular Jews with secular Muslims."

Mr. Elmasry also insisted that "there is no punishment" under Islamic law for denouncing Islam, its holy text, or the prophet Muhammad. Asked if his words could be construed as a death sentence, he said: "This is nonsense and this is not true."

But Robert Spencer, director of jihadwatch.org and author of The Politically Incorrect Guide To Islam (And The Crusades) disputes that claim.

"He is speaking about matters that are death penalty offences in the Islamic world, or at least in traditional Islamic law. I don't think it's a death sentence in Canada. I hope not. It certainly would be a death sentence in some Muslim countries."'

I don't believe there is enough moisture in a wax seal (or two seals) to rot the subfloor. (If this is what Steve means) The silicone is simply a barrier between the porcelain and the flooring. Failing to do this would allow moisture to get at the wood subfloor. The silicone I feel is a must, guarding against sloppy kids who leave more water on the floor than in the tub (my son), over zealous clean freaks with the mop (my wife) and those with a poor aim. Canada's homicide rate jumps

OTTAWA (CP) - Canada's homicide rate jumped last year after reaching a 30-year low in 2003.

But for the third consecutive year, the number of spousal homicides declined, although all other categories of family homicide rose, Statistics Canada reported Thursday. Firearm homicides increased slightly to 172, which was 11 more than in 2003 and 20 more than in 2002. And 65 per cent of those were committed with a handgun.

Still, firearm homicides in Canada were much lower than those in the United States, coming in at 28 per cent compared with 66 per cent.

In total, police reported 622 homicides last year, 73 more than in 2003>>>>>

A top security official said more Palestinians were killed in internal violence this year than by Israeli troops.

We could have the Dingwall Official Gum Registry. All Canadians with legally obtained gum would have to register said gum with the feds. The next time you go to a movie and have difficulty getting your foot off the theater floor, you could launch a civil rights complaint. Of course, there would also be an appropriate waiting period for those who wish to purchase gum and, in Toronto, they could have a central gum armoury.

John: I should clairify: Using two wax seals because the flange is flush or recessed (read: improper installation, or new floor installed over old floor) won't prevent leaks. (The wax isn't actually supposed to stop the water, it's to prevent gas and odours from escaping).

Of course, there's no need to prevent odours if you live in Ottawa -- the stench from the hill can't be stopped be mortal windows.

maz2's comments about the gun registry are taken out of context and are specious. the fact that the rise in firearm related fatalties can ALL be attributed to the rise of gang murders in Etobicoke means that perhaps the gun registry is doing its job. subtract those murders and there has been a decrease in the number of homicides by firearms. hmmm: the next government program you can ridicule is the police and firefighters. i mean us hardworking albertans shouldnt have to pay any taxes, right?

A letter sent to the Globe and Mail this evening.

'Dear Editor,

Why one despairs utterly about Canadian politics, and why the Conservatives are in the end as irresponsible and unredemiably "political" as the Liberals; with as little concern for the national interest.

In Question Period October 6 two Conservative MPs attacked the Government for considering sole-source contracting for C-130J tactical military transport aircraft and for CH-47 heavy lift helicopters. These types of aircraft are desperately needed by the Air Force. There are really no alternatives to the C-130J and the CH-47 for the mission requirements. Yet the Conservatives would rather try to score points off the Liberals (sole-sourcing inherently bad) than actually support the Forces.

The Conservative questioners raised some points--some with some validity, some not--against each of these aircraft in an effort to give the questions some factual basis. The clear point of the questions nonetheless was not a rational concern over what aircraft the Air Force might acquire. The point was simply the attempt to embarrass the Government. Not any true concern for meeting the Air Force's--and Canadian Forces'--needs.

I regret being vulgar but screw them all.'

In 1988 I was reading a British Airways employee newsletter at the home of my friend, a British Airways employee. Very interesting article about the mid-life overhaul of the Concorde aircraft. A lot of aircraft get corrosion under the floor due to condensation and cold temperature at altitude. The Concorde had little floor corrosion, probably because of high temperatures caused by high speeds. One place did have corrosion; around the toilet in the men's loo. The theory of this had something to do with poor aim caused by champagne intake. Something to take into account when you are doing your bathroom's mid-life refit!

The main statistic everyone missed was simply that polls are political tools and just as suited to being sprayed upon by dogs, as are poles and hydrants.

There was some humour, and it was fun to follow, but it was TV quality entertainmet.

The most useless bit of professorial bull ever devised goes something like, results are accurate to plus or minus two percent 19 times out of 20.

I can recall polls taken before elections that were out by 30 to 35%.

Meaning they were designed to sway voters, not give an accurate reflection of anything.

MPS: NEW CITIZENSHIP LAWS NEEDED
By SUE BAILEY
OTTAWA (CP) - A Liberal MP is pushing his own government to overhaul citizenship laws in part to ensure that those who swear in new Canadians are competent...

...no legal background is required to become a citizenship judge. There are 29 mostly ceremonial positions across the country that pay up to $91,000 a year...

...the report makes 16 recommendations that were delivered to Immigration Minister Joe Volpe in June. "He had the summer to deal with that, and we were promised we'd be getting a (new) Citizenship Act,"...

...But the report ducks the contentious question of whether babies born in Canada to foreigners should automatically receive citizenship. The issue flared last June when news broke that a relative of a hardline Syrian general had come to Canada to give birth....>

Pettigrew chauffeur is on paid leave

ELIZABETH THOMPSON
The Gazette

Friday, October 07, 2005

A ministerial chauffeur at the heart of a controversy over his travel with Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew won't be driving the minister for a while.

Sebastien Theberge, spokes-person for Pettigrew's office, said Bruno Labonte asked for and obtained a paid leave for an indeterminate period to deal with a personal problem unrelated to the publicity over Pettigrew's decision to have him accompany him on two foreign trips.

Civil service rules provide for such leaves when employees need time to deal with personal problems, Theberge said.

Theberge refused to disclose the nature of the personal problem that prompted Labonte to apply for leave from his roughly $46,000-a-year job.>>>

In "Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs," a major three-part series on BBC TWO (at 9.00pm on Monday 10, Monday 17 and Monday 24 October), Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister, and Nabil Shaath, his Foreign Minister, describe their first meeting with President Bush in June 2003.

Nabil Shaath says: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, "George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan." And I did, and then God would tell me, "George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …" And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, "Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East." And by God I'm gonna do it.'"

(By the way the story is over two years old. See "Did Bush Say God Told Him To Go To War?", by Ira Chernus, June 30, 2003
http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0630-04.htm )

"A meme in the making"

Excerpts:

'What did Bush say to the Palestinians? I dunno, but in 2003 - when this story was first broken by Ha'aretz - a Religious Studies Professor writing for the far-left site CommonDreams.com noted that the remarks were translated several times over:

"According to Abbas, Bush said: 'God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.'"

Before you jump to any conclusions, remember that you are reading a translation of a translation of a translation. Mahmoud Abas does not speak English. Bush does not speak Arabic. If Bush said these words, or something like them, Abas heard them from a translator. Then Abas repeated them, as he remembered them a couple of weeks later, in Arabic. Some unknown person wrote down what he thought he heard Abas say. Then Regular, or someone at Ha'aretz, translated them back into English-or perhaps first into Hebrew and then into English..."

According to the Guardian, the BBC itself is backing away from this story - not because the story is complete bunk, mind you, but because of Rupert Murdoch or something:

BBC programme editors turned lukewarm on a claim by a BBC2 programme that George Bush believed God told him to invade Iraq and Afghanistan after a strong denial by the White House.

Just 24 hours after accusations that the corporation's news coverage was backing away from risk-taking, some of the BBC's key outlets decided not to run an exclusive story unearthed by BBC2 about the US president.
[...]
The lukewarm response by other BBC outlets to a BBC News exclusive in the wake of a denial by the US government is likely to dismay the new head of television news, Peter Horrocks.

Just a few days ago he urged staff not to be afraid of being first with stories, as long as they were factually accurate.

It is perhaps inevitable that suspicions may be raised about any cautious reception to BBC stories that do not present Mr Bush in the best light following Rupert Murdoch's comments that Tony Blair had told him BBC World's coverage of Hurricane Katrina was "just full of hate for America and gloating about our troubles".

Diplomats' Safety Under the Microscope
A look at security concerns behind the wheel
Embassy Magazine
October 5th, 2005

Paul Cellucci did something last week he hadn't dared in four years as U.S. Ambassador to Canada got behind the wheel of a vehicle...

...As ambassador, Mr. Cellucci had been under heavy surveillance, a microscope his successor David Wilkins is now under. In transit, a bodyguard and driver from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police accompany the ambassador on each and every car trip. Only the American, Israeli and Turkish heads of mission in Ottawa are given such privileges, or when security intelligence shows a diplomat is under direct threat in the country, says Marcel Richard, of the Protective Liaison Section of the RCMP.

...Under the Vienna convention on diplomatic relations, the host country is responsible for the safety of diplomats and foreigners on official business, like heads of state and political delegations. Dignitaries visiting Canada are under the special watch of the RCMP...

...Asked whether Mr. Cellucci, now an executive at Canadian-owned Magna Entertainment, was a moving target when he took to the driver's seat last week, Mr. Marwitz says any political danger has expired...

Calgary and the tar sands

What's going on in Calgary, with new subdivisions of half-million dollar houses opening every month, is the North American tragedy in microcosm. Because every new suburban house built, every new Target store opened, every new parking lot paved, every highway widened will be a project in the service of a living arrangement with no future. It is a true madness that beats a path to historic tragedy.
And this is what you have to think about, wherever you live in the US or Canada: what kind of projects and proposals are moving right now in the permitting pipeline of your own municipal planning boards? Things waiting to be built in the next year or two. Chances are they're the same suburban furnishings we've been getting for half a century, in the latest state-of-the-art releases. Each one is a tragedy. Each one will carry us further into darkness.
