In an anonymous corner of the Canadian blogosphere, there's someone out there who should be drawing the big bucks in syndication. Not only is he a better writer than half of the bloated pontificators in residence at MacLeans, the Star, and Globe, he actually has something important to say.
Go read Gramma's House.
Wells, Levant, Zerb - see what you can do. Get this guy a gig.

Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at September 23, 2005 12:51 PMGreat article as usual Kate. Can't help but notice the similarity between Native-Americans in Canada and Afro-Americans in the US. Same kind of culture, Grandma raising the grandchildren, girls with children from different fathers, young able bodied males with no accountability or sense of responsibility, and the catch all excuse "It's whiteys fault". In Canada the Native-Americans are blaming the residential schools, to the best of my knowledge there were no residential schools in US, therefore with two subcultures so alike can we blame residential schools. I don't think so. Comments?
Posted by: Don at September 23, 2005 1:13 PMI couldn't agree more Kate...this person really gets it. I have been a fan for a while now. If some MSM picks him up, he would be one of a kind in Canada. And nobody could ever call him a racist! What a concept!
Posted by: david maclean at September 23, 2005 2:21 PMThe problem of how to help the native population cannot be solved within the confines of our current political system. This seems obvious as there can be no effective solution implemented within a 4 year period. Since the only possible solution would be a long-term plan involving education, it's unlikely that any government in power would see the positive results during their time in office. Thusly, there would be no political incentive to implement a real plan. Instead, we can create an immediate pay-off by throwing money at them that we collect from other Canadians. Every native deserves to have a vote and as long as they have them, those votes will be purchased by politicians.
Perhaps, in this respect, the federal liberals and their lap dog media co-horts are doing the natives a favour by systemically killing democracy in this country. Once they are completely rid of any viable opposition, they will be free to set in place longer range policies. Perhaps, then, we'll see a real solution..... OK, probably not...
Posted by: Rob R at September 23, 2005 2:26 PMIf Gramma's house were printed in the Globe and Mail, i.e. when Amelia Earhardt lands at JFK, there would be immediate and national outrage from leftists everywhere, because Raskolnikov does the unthinkable: He speaks honestly and cogently from real-life experiences, and his path in life -- speak the truth, be courageous -- is Kryptonite to the MSM.
The sort of poverty pimps who keep kleptocratic governments (ahem) aflush with taxpayer money can find their perfect enemy right square in the center of Raskolnikov's heart.
Our treasure, their target.
If the day comes when we find Raskolnikov's voice in the MSM, or in any media with mass distribution, things will be sure be looking up in this country.
Posted by: EBD at September 23, 2005 3:41 PMHey,.. you guys, there are no words left. But thanks for saying it. TG
Posted by: TonyGuitar at September 23, 2005 4:41 PMI don't think Raskolnikov can really be native. Natives are only supposed to read books by Rigoberta Menchu and other "native" authors, so how would he know about "Crime and Punishment"? An obvious plant.
(I'm kidding but I've known graduate lit students who thought like this. And, yeah, he rocks.)
