I always thought if I moved to one of these areas I'd want the walls of my house made of poured concrete. Big thick shutters on hinges you can put over the windows quickly.

Course that leaves the roof.

Scary we had 160 km winds in winnipeg a month ago and a lot of damage was done but I never saw anything like that.

Hey Doc
They had winds reported over 160 MPH.
That's insane wind speed.

From Enviropundit: Green Building Blog:

One of the tidbits of information that I heard during the coverage of Katrina was that the homes were additionally susceptable to storm damage because of the pre-existing damage caused by the Formosan termites.
The bright side: flooding kills termites.
