FEMA Head Removed

With allegations of resume padding, this was just a matter of time. A commentor at "Poliblogger";

if "brownie" is so dang unqualified, then why was brown overwhlemingly confirmed by the senate when it was controlled by the dems?

FEMA is a management agency which must get cooperation if it's to be able to cut through the layers of local and state government during an emergency. it has no assets of its own; it's a management service that can marshall in and manage vast national reservoirs of aid into counties and cities and states.

brown had a lot of legal background in the relationships between local, state and federal governments/bureaucracies before he got the FEMA job. it's one reason he was nominated and confirmed.

ALSO: it's easy in hindsight to say that last year's FLORIDA hurricane season was un-extraordinary; IOW: it sure looks that way now. but ti was the worst hurricane season florida had ever had - except fore andrew. but the very fact that aid flowed in there so smoothly proves brown is NOT a total incompetent. he ran FEMA then, and NO ONE COMPLAINED. not once.
also keep this in mind: brown has done NO FINGER- POINTING. zero.

Next question: When are the Louisiana governor and mayor of New Orleans going to step up to the political chopping block?

The New Orleans mayor is a race-bating blowhard while the Governor cracked under pressure and could only muster a face full of tears and a snotty Kleenex. Oh yeah, their also left wingers so that's why the kid gloves thanks to the MSM.

michael d. brown 'overwhlemingly' confirmed by a democratically controlled senate? get your facts straight. he was appointed in january 2003, at a time of republican hegemony in government.

furthermore his handling of the hurricane season in florida last year was far from smooth. case in point were the cries to have him removed 12 months ago for handing out $30M TO residents of Miami, a city NOT affected by hurricane frances. its surprising that a group of rightwingers such as yourselves would blatantly support such a 'big government tax waster'.

and dont forget to cringe when we all look back at the excellent and almost immediate response of the Liberal government to the disaster.

"Chickenbeavers"? Ooh, I sense a Canadian fast-food franchise being born...

Posted by: ebt at September 9, 2005 2:54 PM

Have a look at what Pierre Bourque has to say about the "excellent and almost immediate response of the Liberal government"....

Memo from Bourque to Martin: "Excuse my bluntness, but I'm directing this to you the person, Paul, not you the PM. I've got to tell you, amigo, this press release of yours late this afternoon is nothing more than Johnny Come Lately pablum ... somebody's got to say it and I'm speaking as a friend ... Hey, man, get with it, this is nothing short of the single biggest natural disaster to hit North America in modern times. Or as Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour put it today, "the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States". There is no reason to wait for other world leaders to step forward first, Paul. Canada's supposed to be the United States' best and closest friend in the world, Canadians are urgently wondering where's your leadership, humanity, and what we're going to do to help ...and all we're getting are benign sterile press releases. Park yourself in front of the national media, Paul, show some spunk, passion, concern, and action. Offer up something material, concrete, and viable to immediately support our neighbours to the south. You and I both know that you're capable of it, that we as a nation are capable of it, that our American brothers and sisters deserve it ... what the hell are you waiting for ?"

I know Lieberals have short memories, but the Prime Minister never even made an official statement until August 31 (http://pm.gc.ca/eng/news.asp?id=570, 2 and a half days later and after the opposition made statements in the morning.

The Canadian government's lack of response had been all over the news - where were you?

Posted by: Mike S at September 9, 2005 2:57 PM

PM PM couldn't make a statement right away because he was busy anouncing a new seator or two. That's important stuf y'know!

Posted by: soup at September 9, 2005 3:28 PM

PMPM was busy calling up the media and begging them not to talk about Maurice Strong and the Baathists.

The Machine Stops

And that is the real problem. E. M. Forster's THE MACHINE STOPS, published almost a century ago, posits a world in the future in which the human race gives up any individual responsibility to an immense computerized system that meets every need -- until it fails.

Those who dream of the perfectibility of human institutions through increasingly, compulsorily collective government will always attack the highest levels of government when it does fail. Republicans and Democrats alike have created huge institutions like the Departments of Education, Housing and Urban Development, and now Homeland Security, built on dreams that can never meet the excessive demands placed upon them.

If we are to learn anything from the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, we will have to review the more practical expectations of the Framers of our Federal system. Local and state government are the primary responders. To keep their powers and responsibility intact the Federal Government is a resource they must administer wisely and decisively. Focusing on the habitual incoherence of Bush Administration communications is beside the point. There is no excuse for ignoring the key failures of local and state government in facing the challenge of Hurricane Katrina. Doing so will only ensure the next disaster.

PMPM was too busy, what with all this oil for fraud stuff about to hit the press. He had to work double time getting all those roadblocks (levies?) in place vis a vis Access to Information, get the spin doctors briefed, make sure the turd polishers at CTV and CBC are ready to tow the Librano party line, etc.

Express sympathy and concern to that Great Satan to the south? That would be un-Canadian! After all, he may need Carolyn Parish's vote again.

Posted by: Eskimo at September 9, 2005 3:54 PM

Not to worry. The Stick Chick (Stronach) is down there now, mincing through the mud in her Pradas promising the evacuees much, much more help from Canada. Now, if she were really there as a concerned citizen, the media wouldn't know about this. Wonder if she's looking for Bubba?

Posted by: Iron Lady at September 9, 2005 5:55 PM

I wish "celebs" like our gal Belinda, Hollywood statesman Sean Penn, et al, would not go to places like this. All rescue and relief work stops to aid the visit of the high and mighty. Some of those folks that have lost everything would really like a bottle of cold water and a sandwich, not the visit of some high-placed carpetbagger.

Reminds me of the Monty Python sketch where two guys are lying in the mud and see the King ride by.

(By the way, has anybody warned the Louisiana residents not to stand under the Canadian Sea King helicopters when they finally get there?)
"He's the King!" says one guy.
"How do you know?" says the other guy.
"He ain't got s**t on him!"

One step behind Dubya

Posted by: ShitStirrer at September 9, 2005 6:54 PM

Right on Kate -- I posted the very same thing (when will Nagin and Blanco step up?) on a local libby website here in Cleveland (OH). Indeed, I believe Mayor Nagin certainly had contempt for the citizens of his city -- after all, he had the means available to move them (via bus) to higher ground. Perhaps he never read his own emergency planning documents posted on NO's website?

nah, she's riding Daddy's coattails. He, at least, is doing something creditable. When reading about it, my only wish was that he had a different last name.

Interestingly enough BS isn't mentioned in any of the articles, nor in the news clips.

Interesting article:

http://www.canadafreepress.com/2005/cover090605.htm

lest we forget PM Pearson appointed Maurice Strong to start up what became CIDA, with no accountability, hire what companies he wanted(no bidding required, favorite company, SNC Lavalin)

Posted by: LJ at September 9, 2005 8:15 PM

Sh*tStirrer;
Better brush up on your American civics class. By law, unless there is an insurection (lasting more than four hours), the federal government cannot just jump in and take over. Both the NOLA mayor and governor were negligent in their duties. Hell, they are still arguing amongst themselves whether or not a manditory evacuation is legal! BTW, that includes both of their staff as the Red Cross was not allowed to enter NOLA lest the homeless decided to seek shelter at the Superdome.
Unfortunately, the political inbreeding portrayed in those movies of the South have a bit of truth in them.

One last point: In 1999, after Hurricane Floyd, I believe, FEMA took three days to get on site in Florida. Nothing was said then. Difference? Clinton was prez.

Posted by: Texas Canuck at September 9, 2005 8:35 PM

TC
Thousands of people die and you quote civics classes
Jeez.
I guess if nothing was said the Republicans didnt care either. Slightly different order of magnitude as well

"and NO ONE COMPLAINED. not once"

Do you do research or just throw it out and think people will believe it?
The investigations into FEMA fraud and vote buying in Florida the summer of 2004 for Bush's re-election are widely documented. Check it.

Howdy y'all. I have never posted here before, but have enjoyed reading this blog over the last several months.
The mayor and governor may never "step up to the chopping block". Instead they will become "valuable" symbols for the Democrats, only they will be unelected to any public office, sorta like Jessie and Reverend Al. (sarc)
I will put my neck out here and say this hurricane is not the disaster we are all hearing about. The defining fact about this huge natural disaster might turn out to be how few people were killed.
Also, I watched Geraldo and Shep and many others in the media loose it on TV and I likely would have done the same. The poor people in the Superdome were very uncomfortable and in some danger, but it was hardly like Rwanda as Doug Saunders suggested in the Globe and Mail. The press is once again feasting on the thought of America in decline. I think of America as the top dog, who after the 9/11 attack and Iraq War is wounded and bleeding. The fact that the rest of the pack turned is not that surprising and I expect to see it more of this behavior after Hurricane Katrina. But I will never bet against the big dog. History is too compelling and Canada for the most part is very fortunate to have such a companion as the USA.
For me this disaster also underscores the need for 4 wheel drive vehicles in the city. Personally I would want a vehicle that can drive over curbs and center medians.

sarge here. yes, miss kate likes to post unfactual 'facts' on her site from the rovioan propaganda mill, but somehow never corrects herself when the lie becomes common knowledge...sarge remembers reading kate telling us jeffery gannon/guckert wasn't really a male prostitute, only rented sites to those bad male prostitutes, when a google search will clearly show many wonderful pictures of gannon/guckert naked on his now defunct website www.hotmilitarystud.com...sarge still wonders what this boy was doing at the white house over one hundred times, somehow the secret service unable to do a backround check. sarge loves those with facts being called trolls...jest keep up yer ittle echo chamber keep believing yer crappy lies and misrepresentations. its all easily researched but that would mean going outside yer little pretend world. if'n ya don't live in bushs america ya can't hardly know whats goin on here. as usual, ya Kanukistani make sarge want to puke.

Posted by: sarge at September 10, 2005 12:42 PM
