ASPCA Rescue Diary

The ASPCA blog is reporting efforts in pet rescue from the disaster zone, including the rescue of 75 dogs from the Superdome;

Don't believe everything you hear. The ASPCA has investigated allegations that family pets in Louisiana are being taken from their owners and shot. We have found absolutely no truth to this widely circulated rumor. According to reliable sources, one dog was shot and killed after he tried to attack an officer. There is no order to shoot animals unless they are endangering law enforcement officers. You can help keep a volatile situation from becoming even worse by checking out rumors before passing them on.

You may have heard the rumor that evacuees in Louisiana are being ordered to abandon their animals. In some cases, they have had to leave their animals but there are many animal rescuers in the area. The Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine has assured us that every effort is being made to reunite animals and people.

The website has contact numbers for those who have found or want to report stranded pets.

As a footnote: if you're inclined to help, research the foundation you give to carefully - animal rights activist groups like HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) and PETA are political entities more concerned with promoting legislation and are not animal rescue or welfare providers. Private rescue can be equally dodgy. It's probably best to stick with the ASPCA or contact your local kennel club.

"The emergency official (Curt Belton, a Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent)said that of the 15 to 20 people his patrol encountered in homes on Monday, only one agreed to leave.

"There's just a ton of people still out there," Belton said. "They don't want to come, and the main reason they're giving us is their pets," he said. "It's crazy."

People have not been allowed to bring their pets with them. There are too many clips and print reports to call this a "rumour."

PetSmart, incidentally, seems a worthwhile bunch in the pet rescue operations:

I am a vet in London, Ontario. Seems many folks in the London area do not want to help, 'cause the people hurt are Americans.

I'm going down the first week of November in a RV, hopefully full of supplies, and volunteer my professional services with a colleague from Memphis.

I am donating the RV after we're done, and flying home. A family of 4 can live in it comfortably for a long time, and it'd be under a tarp here for the winter.

I also recommend donating to the ASPCA or the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. www.avmf.org Definitely not PETA.

There are 4 VMAT teams in Mississippi and Louisiana as we speak. I volunteered with them in NYC after 9/11 at the World Trade Center. They do amazing work, and there is no misuse of donated funds.

As silly as it sounds, their pets mean more some people than their two-legged kinfolk. Animals can and do have a calming theraputic effect on most folks and especially after such a traumatic event like Katrina, one can understand their hesitance to abandon their pet.
Having said that, I can see how rescuing humans should be a priority. The whole scene could get nasty without people like Dr. Dillard out there. Thank God for the Dr. Kylas in this world who are out there helping.

Thank you Texas. I don't know what hit me, I'm going in October. November I was scheduled to be on vacation in New Orleans.

Still can't find my colleagues and friends there on any survivor lists. I went to vet school in Baton Rouge.

TO SOME PEOPLE PETS ARE LIKE THIER KIDS.

I KNOW FOR DAMN SURE I WOULD NOT LEAVE MY DOG BEHIND, IT IS VERY WRONG FOR OFFICERS TO SAY NO YOU CANT SAVE YOUR PETS LET THEM DROWNED.

NO SORRY I FEEL VERY DIFFRENT TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT BONDED WITH AN ANIMAL YOU WOULD HAVE NO CLUE WHAT ITS LIKE TO HAVE SUCH GREAT LOVE FROM A HELPLESS ANIMAL IT IS YOUR JOB TO PROTECT THE ANIMAL AND DO EVERYTHING IN YOUR POWER TO TAKE CARE OF IT OR YOU SHOULDNT HAVE IT.

THERE ARE SO MANY ANIMALS OUT THERE SUFFERING AND THATS SAD I FEEL MORE BAD FOR THEM THEN THE HUMANS OUT THERE THEY WERE TOLD TO GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE AND DID THEY NO COULD THEY HAVE YES THEY ALL COULD HAVE TAKEN THE ANIMALS BUT SADLY THEY DIDNT LISTEN AND LEFT AFTER THE WATERS WERE GETTING HIGH AND THE ANIMALS WERE LEFT THERE TO DIE.

THIS IS A GREAT THING THESE PEOPLE ARE DOING TO SAVE THE ANIMALS WHO DIDNT HAVE THE CHOICE TO LEAVE I FEEL VERY SORRY TO THE PEOPLE WHO FIND THAT ITS HARD TO BELEAVE THAT PEOPLE WANT TO SAVE THE PETS THEY DONT WANT TO LEAVE THEM BEHIND TO SOME PEOPLE THATS ALL THEY HAVE.

THINKING ABOUT ALL THESE ANIMALS LEFT BEHIND MAKES ME VERY UPSET.

THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN TRANSFERED TO MY SATE UTAH TELLING ON THE NEWS HOW THEY HAD TO SIT IN A GARAGE WITH THERE ANIMALS BECAUSE OFFICERS WOULDNT LET THEM BRING THEIR ANIMALS FINALY THEY ACCEPTED AND LET THE PEOPLE TAKE THE ANIMALS I JUST CANT BELEIVE THEY WOULD TURN A LIFE AWAY LIKE THAT THEY ARE JUST LIKE HUMANS ITS JUST SO SAD THAT SOME PEOPLE DONT THINK THAT WAY.

I just moved back to Texas from Florida and had to go through many evacuation orders during last year's hurricane season but I stayed home through them all because the shelters do not allow pets even if they are in carriers. I didn't feel it was right to just leave my pets alone and just hope that they survived. I would rather stay with them and ride out the storm. I have no children so my pets are like my children. Even when I am broke I am more concerned with feeding them than feeding myself. There is one story that I heard of a boy getting onto a bus in Louisiana and he was told that he couldn't take his dog with him so one of the news people volunteered to take the boys dog and take care of it for him till he has a place to live. I think that there should be places for people to evacuate or relocate to in cases of bad weather/natural disasters that allow pets and some that don't...it would only be fair. They don't say that you can't bring your kids with you do they? There is plenty of room here in Texas for everyones' pets as well as themselves!

Hey Kate,

You're a breath of fresh air. I just tuned to you after hearing you on Warren today. Keep it up.

P/S- Especially about the self centered Dion. She's a real jerk and embarassment.

Thanks so very much.

As long as PETA dont ever get the pets then they will be returned to their owners and not killed and thrown into a dumpster
