Saskatoon mayor Don Atchison blasts SaskParty leader Brad Wall for drawing attention to the problem of crime and gang violence in Saskatoon's inner city (with the cutting retort that "he lives in Swift Current") ... the Saskatoon Police are investigating an apparent crystal meth lab at the Salvation Army. They're holding about 30 people for "decontamination" and have a couple of blocks around the building cordoned off.
(Via local radio news.)
Postscript Further investigation proved the chemicals to be photo developing fluid. Found in the section of the SA that serves as a "half-way house" for corrections inmates, nobody is sure why the occupant fled.
This story has it all.The Sally Ann's making crank, and Mayor acting like a Clouseau.
Posted by: howie meeker at August 23, 2005 7:29 PMNot to mention that by 2 pm today the police were so busy on the east side that they needed to pull officers off the west side... God help us on a Saturday night. Could only listen in for a few minutes (via saskatoonscanner.com live)... a murder and stand-off on Main St., break-ins here and there, ..and..oh ya.. a female real estate agent was raped while showing a house. Move along... nothing to see here. Computers in squad cars going on the fritz (lack of communication), not enough cops to deal with the calls, etc.. What a joke the public safety in this city/province has become.

This is an ideal situation for Military training, and I do not mean green recruits by any means.
Obviously the locals need help at regaining some ground towards normalcy.

Justice John Gomery, head of the Commission of Inquiry into the Sponsorship Program, listens to testimony in front of stacks of printed material in Ottawa.
OTTAWA (CP) -- The sponsorship inquiry is asking ordinary Canadians for their comments on the scandal.
Justice John Gomery is asking people to submit their comments through the inquiry website or by mail to help him put together recommendations for changes to the way government handles things such as sponsorships.
In his mandate for the inquiry issued in February he was authorized to conduct consultations on his eventual recommendations...

Posted by: maz2 at August 25, 2005 9:36 PMMaz2, I went and politely answered Gomery's questions as you suggested. Very enjoyable when you get going.
I couldn't help but gently push buttons a bit. There may be a double take or two.
Let's hope there is a sense of humour there, otherwise, if I go missing, you may have to try Emails to Camp Gagetown New Brunswick.
That's where Liberals keep their political prisioners, isn't it? 73s TG
I feel for the people of my former city and home. It's to bad they just try to sweep it under the carpet. I have a couple of friends that are on the Police force in S'toon and they tell some of the most disgusting stories about what really goes on. Things that make CSI look like Sesame Street. If things were more transparent it would be alot easier for change to happen. I imagine this is not just a problem in S'toon.
