More Advice For Newbies

I've decided to add my own worthless bit of advice as a followup to yesterday's Carnival of the Newbies.

For all the comparisons to the MSM, at its core, blogging isn't journalism and it's not about writing your own private opinion column. While both elements can be a part of the whole, they don't define the medium. (Why try to duplicate something that already exists? )

So, my advice is pretty simple and it applies no matter what your niche or area of interest is:

Push the envelope.

Don't be afraid of writing something that sounds stupid in the morning. Stop worrying about being wrong. It's not about accuracy, it's not about always being right. That's what updates and corrections and commentors are for. Blogging is a conversation. Sometimes, in conversations, you blurt out things that offend someone or miss the mark. That's normal.

If once in awhile, you aren't saying to yourself.. "Oh boy... maybe I shouldn't do this" .... you're being too careful.

Take a deep breath and hit "save".

"Push the envelope."

And don't forget to fill it with unmarked bills!

Thanks, Kate. Pushing the evelope (ideally WITHOUT unmarked bills) should be what it's about. You've pushed the envelope to an artform.

"Don't be afraid of writing something that sounds stupid in the morning"

Judging from half the stuff I read here Kate, I don't think you worrry about appearing stupid at all.

"Stop worrying about being wrong"

Never stopped you Kate.

"It's not about accuracy"

Definately describes most of the crap you post.

"it's not about always being right"

Why worry about being correct about the details, details only get in the way of a good rightwing (or even leftwing) rant.

"Sometimes, in conversations, you blurt out things that offend someone or miss the mark."

Hmmmm sounds like CPC politicans to a tee.

Using anonymity when posting sounds like an LPC politician to a tee. Typical

An ambitious group of writers is setting up a weekly political satire, Libranos.com. They're looking for contributors. Check out
craigslist.org under Vancouver, go to Creative Gigs. E-mail address is info@Rockthevote.ca
I have no idea what this is about, but anything that will infuritate the Librano$ is worth our time and effort. They're looking for all sorts of folks. Given the MSM's determination to discredit Grewal and promote Libs-as-victims, this site is one whose time has come.

Laughing can make you slim

Look above to anon's comments. The liberal left socialists lack a sense of humour.

Stalin/Hitler/Mussolini/Pol Pot. & etc. did not have humour; they were Communist/Socialists; they were seriously depraved humans (?)who chortled with Satanic glee as they shot/murdered/burned their own people and millions of others. They and their followers promised to save humanity. Their followers today include the sour/humourless fellow-travellers such as anon.

Yes, satire/humour/wit are serious subjects. Laugh or cry? Your choice is ?

Breaking...Liberal MP Pat O'Brien is giving a news conference at 10:00 to discuss his political future. Sounds like he's bolting.

Posted by: john g at June 6, 2005 9:50 AM

Maybe O'Brien will force others to examine their consciences, too. No doubt he'll have to sit as an independent, unless he's got something arranged with the Tories. Watched a bit of CPAC yeterday (only because there was torrential rain), and they were holding the SSM C-38 hearings. 24-hours notice is all they gave the religious and other groups opposed to SSM. O'Brien was very compelling. He is an honest guy and would be a huge asset to the Tories. He told his constituents, most of who support him anyway, that no matter what his future, he was opposed to SSM. Got to hand it to the Paddy, he's got integrity. Okay, now it's time for the rest of the like-minded to make their move. What would happen if others followed, say about 6 or 8 of them? With all the murmurings/rumours about dissent in the Martin ranks, isn't it time these folks walked the walk?

Gee Paul, are all those brave Anonymity poster of the CPC on other blogs Linerals then. Face it, I just don't want my real name link to this Blog of Kates. If you don't like, TFS

Another bit of advice to Newbies: your blog is private property. If trolls choose to use it for little more than personal attack, you don't have to humour them anymore than you have to allow a drunk in your home.

Posted by: Kate at June 6, 2005 10:13 AM

Kate, the only thing I can see that might be wrong with posting whatever you happen to be thinking is future job prospects. You're pretty open about your name and who you are (including pics), but other commenters in the past have suggested that you run for MP or MLA. I think you'd be great that way too and am quite surprised that an MP hasn't given you a call to work for them. I know you didn't start SDA to get attention for yourself or to find a job, but with your talent for written output you'd be a great asset to the CPC leadership in behind the scenes. Unfortunately, with some of your past postings and the fact that Librano's like Kinsella read this fairly often (anon?), it's unlikely that a CPC member could hire you and make your name public.
Thanks for the great blog! SDA has inspired me to NOT start my own blog because you leave nothing else to say!

Not if you've decided that you don't like working for uptight prigs without a sense of humour. Being self-employed is a definite plus, too.

Posted by: Sean at June 6, 2005 11:07 AM

It isn't the ppl she'd be workin for you've got watch out for - it's the opposition, the Lieberals, the media.
Point taken though. I'm self-employed too. It'd be real hard for me to back to being an employee.

Posted by: King Richard at June 6, 2005 11:27 AM

But when you work for yourself, you can't help thinking "will this be the one that gets me audited" everytime you hit save. Oh well....save..

Thanks Kate. You said exactly what I needed to hear right now. I've been debating whether or not to post some personal politics, but I think you've made my mind up for me. Ya got balls, kiddo!

I have no desire to work for anyone, or run for anything. As I have mentioned in the past, I don't belong to any political parties either.

Hey Kate, I'm even gettin SDA trolls on my blog!:

"Hmm. I don't suppose you realize how utterly ridiculous you make your intellect capacity look when you post this.Didn't think so.Keep pumping out the outrageous propaganda. I will stick to blogs that provide insightful commentary. That of course, is what blogs are supposed to do. O wait I forgot...you subscribe to the "Kate Philosophy" for blogs. Post whatever you want, don't care about any form of rational thought or objectivity and degrade the quality of your blog to something below the slimey, sleazy tabloids I can find at the market.Bravo!"

I guess it's my fault. I was busy when I posted it and forgor to send it to the "Ministry of Blog Posting Approval" first...
