Cadman's dream for justice now a little closer
The Gazette’s ELIZABETH THOMPSON reports:
He entered politics to fight for justice for the victims of violence and their families after his son was stabbed to death.
Now British Columbia MP Chuck Cadman's dream of justice is a little closer to being realized after Justice Minister Irwin Cotler said late yesterday he shares many of Cadman's concerns and plans to act on them.
However, Cotler said he told Cadman only after last night's critical vote because he didn't want to be accused of trying to influence him.
"I went to Mr. Cadman (after the vote) and said, 'I didn't want to speak to you about this before the vote and never did, but those initiatives that you had with respect to victims' rights, I said I am going to be supporting them as best as I can because I believe we have a common cause in that regard.' "
Cotler said he had been thinking about issues Cadman had raised for some time, such as victims' rights and Cadman's bill to crack down on street racing. Cotler said his preoccupation with victims' rights came long before there was any question of a vote. Now that the immediate crisis has been averted, Cotler said, he can move forward with addressing those concerns.
Public Safety Minister Anne McLellan had nothing but praise for Cadman and also appeared open to acting on some of Cadman's causes.
"We are bringing forward legislative amendment to strengthen the rights of victims and victims' families. We're putting more resources into our existing victims' programs to expand them.

Down with National Socialism.
Long live Harper-Duceppe.
Long live freedom and democracy.
I don't think Cadman was bought so much as he was considering his health (He's ill with cancer and doesn't know if he'll run again)and the prospect of loosing his benefit package... Think about it, only the strongest among us would consider putting ourselves out of work, were we in his position, for an ideal. Especially when said ideal seems to mean to little to the brainwashed Cannuckistan sheople...
Posted by: Richard Evans at May 20, 2005 8:17 AMCadman sold for a benefit package?
The Librano$ "benefit package".
The benefit package of the Librano$ ????
Cadman is ill.... with cancer?
Will Cadman be the first human to live forever by virtue of a "benefit package"?
Is that what the Librano$ are selling? A "benefit package"?
This conservative cannot be bought by the Librano$.
That was a pretty damming article but I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.
Considering only 1/2 or 2/3 of the people don't follow federal politics, and of that remainder, many hate the Liberals but have been misled to believe Gomery will clear this up. Add to that, the dis-information and stupidity of my neighbors, and it's very possible that the opinion came out like that.
"HAPPINESS IS A STUFFED BROWN ENVELOPE"
Posted by: SDC at May 20, 2005 10:23 AMI don't blame Cadman, he did what his constituents wanted. As for being bought, it could be true, but the new legislation could also be to keep him happy in case there's another confidence vote. Moreover, assuming it's true look at his 'price'; Victims rights is an important cause. He's a populist who believes in representing his constituents, he would have compromised his principles by voting against them. A lot of the problems in Ottawa today are a result of politicians thinking they know better than the people they represent, now everyone here is bashing Cadman for listening to the people who gave him his mandate? Save your harsh words for Belinda, who sold out her boyfriend, her party and her constituents for a cabinet post. She's the real reason we lost that vote yesterday, our very own Judas.

I think the saddest aspect of this political mess is that in places like Iraq people seriously risk there lives and the lives of their families to get out and vote for some kind of a representative government with rights and free of massive corruption. In Bananada people are screaming to not have to waste an hour of their time to vote out a corrupt government that day by day takes away out rights and freedoms that so many people have died to hand down to us. Chuck says 75% of his constituents don't want a summer election and would prefer to keep the Kleptocracy we now have. I am not sure we deserve a democracy with that mindset. This country is pathetic.
Posted by: George at May 20, 2005 10:54 AMCadman as quoted in National Post, Friday, May 20, 2005:
""The only thing I ever demanded was a couple of tickets to Mark Knopfler and a case of beer. But nobody came through with that one," Mr. Cadman said afterward.""
Chuck Cadman, Member of Parliament, Canada.
For the Record.
Posted by: maz2 at May 20, 2005 11:20 AMIf You Don't Like The Result Of A Poll, Don't Report It
I love the speed and access to information the internet affords. I like those cutesy little mini-polls that sites like the Globe and Mail, CTV and others have. The curious thing is virtually everytime I vote in one of these things these days, the results show that 2/3 of respondents want the Liberals gone no matter what the question.
Like today's question for example, Were you pleased that the Liberal minority government survived? 62% of 28,796 respondents said No. Same result with most questions about the Liberals.
Now if you read the Globe or its website, you would surely conclude that the Liberal party was Canada's only defense against the conservative 'hidden agenda'. Funny they don't mention that the vast majority of their readers don't see it that way, at least according to the results of their own polls.
No doubt they use the results themselves to "massage the kinks" out of their own message as organs of the Liberal party
Posted by: oltx at May 20, 2005 11:32 AMCadman is bought and uses the tired liberal talking points to tell us he
wasn't, the same ones that Duffy and every single Toronto news head uses.
My constituents don't care!
When they say "don't want an election" what they are saying is "we don't
care about theft, keep on bribing us".
It's a blizzard of "Harper is not the guy" red herrings, and "no one
accepts Harper" crap 24 /7 in the centre of the idiot socialist universe
here in the GTA.
The CBC is in full election mode and there is only one story getting over
the TV news here and it's Harper is not quite right.
Man on the street interviews when asked about the commons vote spout off
last years election CBC lieberal talking points of Harper this and Harper
that to justify their willing blindness. For most of Toronto it comes down
to the best or most trusting haircut , I'm not being funny here.
We could run mother Teresa, Gandhi and Winston Churchill it wouldn't matter.
Only real hardcore Conservatives even bother to try to follow Gomery.
We've got our head so far up our own ass it will never change here .
I repeat Toronto will be liberal forever, it's filled with social
workers, guvment cheque cashers, activists, and more people that have a
client relationship with The liberals than we can ever hope to overcome, and
they will use every dishonest excuse you or I could ever think of to justify
their support of these thieves.
They are willingly blinded coercive stakeholders and will deny it and make
faux excuses forever.
Americans figured out that nanny state, tax peter to pay paul government is
a road to ruin and punted the left ,with more information of just how
corrupt this type of government can be and real proof that it is happening
right now in Canada we still want to re elect them here in Toronto.
I think this is why dumb Canadians hates Americans
the truth has hit us in the face like a cold dead 20 lb walleye on a
stringer and we can't admit it to ourselves and so fall back to belittling
the ones who have proven more noble than us.
We have been told from birth that we are more noble than the redneck,
cowboy, hillbilly, loud mouth, blah blah blah Americans and are willing to
drive our country over a cliff to prove it.
A 20 pound walleye? Holy crap! I thought I did good catching one about three pounds once (they were rare in Minnesota and I was I dunno, maybe 12 at the time).
Mmmmm, boneless fish!

There are 5 more chances for me to use them this spring before parliament prorogues. ;-)
Posted by: WL Mackenzie Redux at May 20, 2005 12:35 PMRe: Chuck's constituents who don't want an election. Remember that 45% of Canadians are too apathetic or too lazy to vote. Naturally, that 45% does not want an election since they find democracy just bothersome . It only takes, say, 20% of voters to say they don't want an election, for Chuck to say that "a majority don't want an election." Even if 80% of people who vote say they wanted an election, Chuck's poll would never tell him to bring down the government.
Posted by: Ben at May 20, 2005 12:45 PMWow.. the liberal grits... create a new version of the SURVIVOR series..
At least all the troughers can enjoy the summer while searching for a safer situation by the time the Gomery winds up.
And the development of grass roots consultation has hit a new level.. a low level.. Why do we
go to the expense of selecting and electing MPs
A grass roots ipod or blueberry investment might
do away with the drama we've witnessed over the last few weeks..
But then I suppose some Mafia or some liberal would devise a method to rigg the responses..
it remains the same..
Posted by: judi at May 20, 2005 1:05 PMUmmmm, I didn't know the vote was about whether or not we wanted an election. I thought the vote was about the Budget? An election just would've been the RESULT of the budget vote not getting passed. Claiming that his constituents didn't want an election at this time should have nothing to do with how he voted. Do you really think that in 3-4 more years PMPM is going to ask his constituents if they want an election? And if they say no, he'll just keep running the country until they say "yes - we want an election now"? Gimme a break! Iraqis faced suicide bombers in order to vote and we're just too dang lazy to even bother kicking out people who blatantly rip us off because it might interfere with our summer vacation. In Canada, Ontario gets the government it deserves!
Posted by: Bacardi Breezer at May 20, 2005 1:09 PMCadman is an independent .The Tories booted him out remember, remember.Vent your spleen on Harper. That was a bad move. This conservative is getting tired of Harper letting the Slime Party outmaneuver him.
Posted by: Dan at May 20, 2005 1:24 PMIt's funny that a guy who champions victims rights would rather vote to prop up the Libranos who have systematically dismantled the Canadian justice system than support the Conservative who have ALWAYS been for a tougher justice system and actual punishment of criminals. I think the main "right" that victims would like is to see the criminals pay for their crimes. Instead they can now sit in their cells (if they even ever end up there) and VOTE for the Libranos to de-tooth the justice systm even more. If that's not sick I don't know what is.
Posted by: Jeff at May 20, 2005 1:37 PMRichfisher for Prime Minister!!!
You have expressed many Western Canadians sentiments very succunctly. It will take another coming of Christ for Easterners to realize how duped they are by the Libranos.
I think a campaign should be started for the evisceration of Ontario from Canada, and the stuperous Ontarioans can suckle on the Librano teat happily ever after. Quebec is not the problem in Canada. It is the Liberal party and the Ontarians who keep re-electing them.
I would prefer to quit moaning my fate and put my energies behind the Conservatives or behind Western separation. Ontario is nothing but a black hole sucking the life out of the rest of us.

Please show your "no doubt about it" evidence next time you slander someone. Oh I forgot, you are hiding behind your keyboard.
You must be using the word Bought to describe the process of polling your electorate, finding out what they really want, and voting accordingly. Something us conservatives have never really caught on to. Thanks for being the proof.

There's so much wrong with that statement, it doesn't deserve this but..just see
www.downingstreetmemo.com
Also, remember that the Sunni's did not go out to vote. Also, you are obviously basing your sunny outlook on the reports fed to you by a media controlled by a country engaged in an illegal war.
Pick an appropriate example next time maybe?

Posted by: jhuck at May 20, 2005 4:45 PMMockpuppet, you gave hourself away with that "illegal war" cop out. Illegal in the eyes of Kofi Annon, the biggest and most dangerous, and anti semetic, anti "life," crook the world has seen since Stalin and Hitler.
Cadman is a leftie from way back coming from a leftie family, his brother is an avid NDPer, and to see where Cadman was "so worried that the Fascists in Ottawa were not doing anything re youth crime", and then voting for them to continue to do nothing for youth crime, sure the guy did it for a pay cheque, look at his resume, he excells in NOTHING. He was lucky that the Reform party needed a "household name" at the time, which gave him the only steady "work" the guy has ever seen.
Stephen. PS He cut off his Geronomo hair tail but could't resist to wear JEANS in the house, now that IS a class act? Watch for his promotion to a plush job with some, any Crown Corporation, even the Fascists know that he is no Senate material somewhere down the road.

Fri May 20, 2005 7:37 AM GMT-04:00
OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's opposition Conservative Party said on Friday it was unlikely to try to defeat the Liberal government again in the near future after an initial bid failed in Parliament on Thursday.
"It's not likely," deputy party leader Peter MacKay told CTV when asked whether the Conservatives would propose a confidence motion before Parliament broke for the summer in mid-June.
Says it all.. damage done. Goodbye! Now get back to work.
