Stronach Splits

Belinda Stronach has crossed the floor to the Liberals, with a new cabinet post her bonus.

Well, we always knew she was a Liberal - they were just hagging over the price.

I wonder if she realizes how many new Western separatists she just created today with her comments about Conservatives not understanding the "complexity" of the country? That the party must "grow in Quebec" before it's a national party? I wonder if she understands that her defection speech will be interpreted as another slap by a self-serving and politically ambitious Ontario power broker at western aspirations to finally have an equal voice in Canada?

Probably not. The woman is that stupid.

Will McKAY cross?

Posted by: hoarydragon at May 17, 2005 10:51 AM

Always knew Belinda was a Liberal in Conservative clothing. Look at the close ties Magna Corp. has with Paul Desmarais et al. Guess Peter got caught thinking with the wrong head!!1

Not only a bimbette, but a traitor. I am now an avowed Western Separatist!!!

Posted by: Old Mother at May 17, 2005 11:00 AM

That means several things, I suggest.

First, the people behind her are, not simply her father, but Power Corp, Desmarais - i.e., the whole infrastructure that runs politics in this country. After all, Belinda, on her own has achieved nothing. Her job? She was head of her father's corporation. How did she get into politics? Via her father and his cronies. So, she's their puppet; the fact that she is willing to act this way is another story.

What's the agenda of Power Corp? Their agenda is to maintain power - at any cost. The political system is simply their upfront office - and they must control that upfront office.
They are worried that they will lose power via Martin. That suggests...and I'm just musing here..that they think that Martin on his own will lose the election. They are setting up Belinda as his sidekick.

That also suggests that they know that can't run Harper. What puzzles me is... IF they felt that Martin would win the election ..they wouldn't need Belinda with the Liberals. They could leave her with the CPC, to take-over from Harper if the CPC lost.
So, they must think that Harper might win the election...and they would be in trouble because they can't run him..and Belinda would be 'out'.

So- they have put Belinda in with Martin, to help him win the election with her as his trophy.

Make any sense???

Is there any honest politician left in Canada, or is this how our society works now? Screw over as many people as you can, as long as you get ahead? Have I fallen into Mirror Universe Canada and no one told me?

Let me know. If that's how the game is played now, I got to call my (Liberal) MP. If we're splitting into screwed and screwer, with no other choice, I want to be in the latter category.

Posted by: V-Man at May 17, 2005 11:03 AM

So when do we get going on separartion? I am ready to rollllllll! Looks to me like Paul Desmarais has called in his debts from Belinda. She should never have run on the conservative ticket in the first place. I think Desmarais thought he would parachute her into the leadership of the Conservative party then things could continue"business as usual". The Montreal Mafia is feeling the heat!

Check Shaken's Field Guide to Liberal Cabinet Ministers

I posted earlier this morning about Martin leadership campaign contributions by the Stronach's that we should not forget about...

Posted by: Shaken at May 17, 2005 11:06 AM

Is anyone really surprised about Stronach? I predict that she will be running for the leadership of the Liberal Party during the next convention. Maybe in the end, the Conservatives should be glad she is gone!!!

I am still concerned & would really like to know just where Martin plans on getting the money to support all these billion dollar promises he has been making.

Posted by: Lou-Lou at May 17, 2005 11:07 AM

People need to realize that Bimbenda was and is a Power Corp. whore. Magna International and Power Corp. trade advisores like Mulroney and William Davis. It is clear that this was planned a long time ago and was saved for the right time. I am going to wait a little while yet, but I am not going to be part of a country where provinces are reduced to whoring themselves for Liberal dollars from Liberal governments. Either the country will sweep these scum from power, or, which is more likely, it will give soft federalists like me a reason to become hard core separatists. Canada has a choice... Banana Republic or a Federation of equals... anyone care to bet which it is? The Bloc have had it right all along.

Posted by: DT at May 17, 2005 11:08 AM

Is it just me, or do politics and skullduggery go stratospheric once one crosses from Manitoba into Ontario. And I thought it got dirty in Saskatchewan. Long live the West!

Posted by: DT at May 17, 2005 11:17 AM

I'm neither for the Conservatives nor the Liberals but Kate, I think she made a good point about the Conservatives not being a national party right now. Their support is still marginal in Quebec. Then again, the Liberals are very marginal in Quebec right now as well. I'm not sure if holding off several months on an election will make any difference in this.

I'm dying to see a statement by McKay as to what is happening with him, if anything.

Posted by: Todd at May 17, 2005 11:21 AM

Just printed off an application form for membership in the Separation Party of Alberta. I have felt for years the entire country was going to h_ _ _ in a handbasket real fast, now I'm sure. I believe in the traditional definition of marriage, it has served mankind since prehistoric times, to discard this into the trash heap as being no longer valid, invalidates our entire history and removes a major foundation stone of our civilization. Oh and Mr. Martin......
I don't know what you are.....

Posted by: logjammer at May 17, 2005 11:22 AM

Belinda wouldn't cross if she didn't know the fix was in. She's providing cover for some nobodies to cross too, or to vote confidence and save Martin's butt.

Belinda won't run for the Lib leadership. Her defection is going to spell the end of Harper and of any chance that the government of Canada should fall into the hands of Westerner that can't be bought. MacKay will take over the Cons, and the Red Tory end game will have been completed.

Get used to Martin, he's going to be around for a few more years.

If the West doesn't leave now they never will.

Belinda's defection makes me sick- and any vestige of respect that I had for HRDC is now gone! It's shocking that she would sell-out so cheaply: either that, or some of the conspiracy theorys are correct.
In French, "Vendu" means sell-out? I don't buy for a second her purported reasons for leaving, but the optics are damaging unless she, and all the fibs, are discredited ASAP.
And I agree that she does not understand the West, and we are not that complicated: we just want some honesty, democracy, integrity...

Posted by: Petlura at May 17, 2005 11:40 AM

Same here, depends on the vote, I feel they have something else up their sleeve. I will also be sending a lot of emails to Klein. It's disgusting and sad that so many people feel honoured to be bribed by their own tax dollars. As George Bernard Shaw once said "A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul." The west is feeling more like Peter and getting fed up with it. Ronal Reagan said "Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first." I wonder if he had a premonition of B(elinda) S(tronach) Her initials suit her...

Posted by: logjammer at May 17, 2005 11:41 AM

While very tempted, and a part of me is in the separation closet, I'm certainly not going to let Belinda decide my current focus.

The big fight is yet to come and we will and can win. The majority of Canadians are fed up. Belinda's crossing the floor is a drop in the bucket. Yet, not only did she fuel some separation, but she just pissed off more people than she realizes.

And how would you define the liberals support in Alberta? Does Alberta count for less than Quebec.

Posted by: Saskamoose at May 17, 2005 12:03 PM

Hey, Saskamoose! After the next election, Liberal support in PQ will be marginal too!

Posted by: Art Williams at May 17, 2005 12:15 PM

Blonde hair really does cover a multitude of sins, eh boys?

Well, I hope all her (male) conservative supporters feel stupid now. She was never a real conservative anyway, but few of us dared to say so, lest we get trashed as "anti-gay bigots" by our own kind.

Those supporters should just follow her to the Liberals or vote Libertarian or something.

Oh, and her boyfriend is so obviously gay it isn't even funny. He may not even know it yet, but it is so obvious to everybody else.

I'll be right about that too, just wait.

Party at my place when Quebec finally bails. I've been hearing about this since I was a kid and am sick of it. Leave already so we don't have to have ugly French cluttering up everything anymore.

Good news I reckon
Who wants a Librano in a position of power, in the so called conservative party.
The devious Mr. Harper new the greatest theat to his party and leadership was to have a blonde bambimbo as an alternative to him. Those men of a certain age in positions of power in MSM were beguiled by the Belinda and would certainly have be willing to give her a soft ride.
The machea villian Harper understands that it's important to keep close to your friends and even closer to your enemies.
To that end he devised a cunning plan to have a lieutenant keep as close to her as physically possible. This also cast a spell on those men of a certain age in the media, who fawned over their apparent coupleness.
Then with nerves of steel he thought to himself, How long should I wait before I let her jump to the burning ship?
Can't say for sure but 2 or 3 weeks ago he ordered Peter to lay off doing the little circles and swirls. And ipso facto she's working under another street light today.
How scary is this guy!
Petes gone wobbly before.
If he follows her, will that be a spanner in his machinations or another devilish move?

Posted by: Wayne from Wetaskiwin at May 17, 2005 12:28 PM

Shitstirrer: Sorry, it's too late for us to give you the black stuff. Haliburton already has it all. As for just giving up, if you define "just" as being 35 years of watching this sorry soap opera, then ya, I just suddenly have up.

OH Canada.

Best line of the day. Stephen Harper commenting, "I never really noticed complexity as one of Belinda's strong points," when he was asked about her reasons for defecting to the Liberals. I'm still chuckling. That guy is sharp.

Belinda Stronach is now where she belongs. In the Liberal Cabinet with the rest of the crooks. I have always said that she was the very worst thing to happen to the CPC. I really do believe that in the long run this will negatively impact the Liberals far more than the Conservatives.

Why don't you ask the CPC, they supported all of it.

You can't have it both ways.. first you complain about surprise surplusses, and then you complain when they announce all the spending as it happens.

No wonder you can't get support in the rest of Canada.

"DT" made a comment above about Belinda Stronach "whoring" herself off to the Liberal Party of Canada. Wake up, DT! This is politics and it's all about them, male or female! It's not about whores or wife beaters, or racists, perverts - whatever! Men climb their way up the political ladder by deception and betrayal, just like women can do, as well. What would you call Paul Martin or Jean Chretien whose political motivations bend and twist all the time just like trees in the wind, just do they can maintain their power base? Would you call them whores as well, or is this just a term you use to shamelessly tell everyone just how much contempt and resentment you have towards powerful women, regardless of how they reach their goals?

Posted by: MANUFACTURINGCONTENT at May 19, 2005 7:47 AM

She is a political whore, who sold her body (and vote) for a cozy cabinet position that she isn't even qualified for. No, running daddy's empire, doesn't make you qualified. There should be laws against crossing the floor, you should have to remain an independent as others have done, because this just stenches of the corruption that we all already know exists within the liberal party. This is BLATANT come over and I've got a position for you, this is corruption at it's worst. No other democratic country would put up with this blatant corruption, but passive Canadians will, even in the wake of the sponsorship scandal. It is pathetic that Martin is still in power, there should have been rioting in the streets until a much deserved resignation was offered by Martin. He was finance minister at the time, so you have 2 choices:

1) He knew about it and is lying through this teeth (the most likely)
2) He is incompetent, because it was his job to know about it

Either way, he should be out on his ass, and passive Canadians should be furious right now, especially now that we've seen him BLATANTLY buy an extension. Stronach is a political whore, and I would say the same if the same situation arose with a man, it has nothing to do with their sex.

I will NEVER vote liberal again.
