We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Bricks

You don’t have to be stupid to buy into the EV claims.

America is steadily switching to electricity for its driving fuel. But the early days of EV ownership are filled with bugs and small frustrations. Even the aspects of the experience that promise to be easy aren’t always easy at first.

When J.D. Power analysts studied the experience of using public EV chargers, they found drivers frustrated with defective chargers and balky payment apps. More than 20% of public charging attempts last year ended in failure, analysts found.

But that’s OK because public charging is rare, right? The promise of electric cars includes an easy, cheap refuel at home every night while you sleep.

That’s not working out well yet, either.

But it helps.

  1. I’d like for one of these climate scolds to explain to me the environmental benefits of paving over what will probably end up being hundreds, maybe thousands of square miles of undeveloped land to house all of these charging stations to charge the millions of these EVs in their hoped for not too distant future. Oh, and what about all of the increased stormwater runoff that will need to diverted into our wetlands, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, tributaries, bays, oceans. Not to mention the heat island effect from all the black asphalt?

    1. the Urban Heat Island effect is a myth according to some climate “scientists”, never mind it’s probably about the only “warming” that man is responsible for

    2. Hi Sid V.,
“Funny thing you should mention that!!!!!!???!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
I live down in the “Florida Parishes section of the bottom of the BOOT called Louisiana!!
Back in ought16 we had a “No Name” Tropical depression come up from the Gulf and “DUMP” a lot of rain on us!!
Every river from the Pearl over on the east side all the way across to the Amite (Next to the Mississippi at Baton Rouge) gave us a run for our money!!! It’s history now but that “RUN OFF THING!!!” you mentioned was really a Big deal!!! Funny how that goes.. That was a few years ago now..
Fortunately today … things are gettin’ back to well not quite but were hangin’ in there normal… at least we are havin’ a great “CRAWFISH SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” an’ Man!! are they tasty !!! ‘Goin’ to a Family Crawfish Boil Party later this morning!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Within this INACCURATE, disingenuous, article there is a link to the promise of telling you how much it costs to operate your EV. They claim the AVERAGE cost is $0.12/ kWh across the US. Oh … that’s nice … but the only problem is that 99% of all EV’s are bought and driven in the Southwest … and maybe the East Coast. PG&E charges $0.27-0.35/kWh for OFF PEAK power use (no charging between 4-9 pm) … and PEAK power use costs: $0.29-0.41/kWh

    https://www.pge.com/pge_global/common/pdfs/rate-plans/how-rates-work/Residential-Rates-Plan-Pricing-2020.pdf

So this article is utter rubbish. I highly doubt there are enough EV’s being sold in OHIO or Louisiana to justify their STUPID $0.12/kWh cost. The REAL cost for MOST EV drivers is THREE TIMES + what they claim. Yeah … guess what!? Your EV costs AS MUCH if not MORE than my Land Rover I just filled today. Oh! And BTW … it’s also costing the average PG&E homeowner $1,000.00/mo. to power and heat their homes this winter. Why? Because the State of CA, PG&E, and the PUC are all conspiring to PUNISH energy use. They want every homeowner to feeeeel what the homeless feeeeeel on the streets … cold.

I must say, that I get viscerally ANGRY when the media fabricates silly transparent LIES and feeds them to the dull-witted public who simply cheer and clap at the bald faced LIES

    1. One must factor in the total cost of the vehicle, maintenance, burning batteries, tires, you know, all the stuff that goes into operating any vehicle. I C E vehicles are far and away better than any electric toy that has no benefit related to the climate of the planet.

      1. The biggest factor in the total cost of the vehicle is the initial cost of the vehicle. People seem to need leather seats, navigation, 8 speaker Bose stereo, aluminum mag wheels (20″ inch of course), sun roof, carbon fiber or “real” wood trim, +300 HP. The actual cost of a vehicle is about 25% higher than it needs be, just on options. Second highest cost is tax. Third is likely fuel. Then maintenance. Then insurance. Then repairs if amortized over the life of the vehicle (unless you drive a Kia or Hyundai).

For fuel, if you drive 25,000 km per year and your vehicle takes 10.0 l/100 km you use 2,500 l (@$1.50/l) or $3,750 a year. If you have an electric car and get 5 km per kwh and 1 kwh is $0.30, your cost of driving is 6 cents per km or $1,500 / year. Let’s “pretend” you save $1,250 per year and you own the car for 10 years. This would allow the electric vehicle to cost about $10,000 more than an ICE vehicle, which I don’t think it does (thinking way more for a comparable EV over ICE).

Regardless, if you are trying to save money, forget about ICE or EV. Buy a much cheaper car (of either design). But buying an EV to save money? Ha.

        1. I would not want to try and drive to Florida in an EV. I do not have that much time left on earth and sure as hell don’t want to spend any of it waiting for an EV to charge. I like my Tucson that gets, in metric, 7.5 km per 100 km, on highway travel. It is a sad society when people think they can control the climate or the environment.

  3. The electric charging infrastructure is a disaster. Went out to get some sun exposure today and walked around the legislator grounds. Plugged into the Flo charger for 3 bucks an hour, same cost as using gas in my car. Walked by the chargepoint charger that was out of service. Went shopping to the local grocery shop that has free charging and that charger was out of service too. BTW i’m not a climate scold and a 10 KW battery comes in handy to warm up my car in winter before and during the first few kilometres and cooling in summer.

  4. Need to be able to easily swap a battery.

Have a network of stations with a hundred fully charged batteries waiting to go

    1. Swap a battery? Are you daft? Do you know the cost of them? I guess not! They are not like the ordinary car batteries!

  5. You morons are like the Stone Age people poo pooing those new Bronze Age a$$h@les.

We will leave you in the backwoods with your archaic expensive stupid tech while you continue to yell and rant at no one in particular.

Keep shaking your fists and losing your
Minds ya dumb apes. See ya.

    1. Yeah … I’m a caveman … because I want to pay a REASONABLE, AFFORDABLE, price to heat my home that is foam insulated to DOUBLE the “green” standards and every appliance is 97% efficient including my tankless water heater. Yeah … $1000.00/mo. To keep my house at 66deg.F because PG&E is charging us 3x the market rate for Nat. Gas.

Sayyyy … did Stone Age People have Nat. Gas. to efficiently heat their home and water? Asking for Og

      1. Hey, “Bruce” Jenner … you’re NOT a woman … your name ISN’T Kaitlynn. Wake up. Get on whatever meds will return you to sanity. Men are men, and women are women.

    2. I like how you pretend that a car running on electricity is some type of new age tech.
      Oh wait, you’re not pretending?
      Yikes!
We don’t care what you drive, just stop telling us what we can’t drive.

    3. Will be interesting to see what happens when there is a big solar storm…..or when the car manufacturers are ordered to shut off vehicles at certain times depending on the whims of government.

    4. Charlto…..That there is really funny. You want something to function that in reality will never function and supply the transportation benefits that I C E vehicles can and do. Pay attention right now. E V s cannot be built without massive inputs of fossil fuels, it is a physical impossibility. You need to think more and insult less.

    5. You might make it to the back woods in your EV but you won’t make it home.

    6. I’ve noticed green skeptics can respond with a blitz of numbers and facts to support their realistic assessment, as seen on this site. People like you just have unfounded confidence and arrogance. Try and fuel your car with that.

  6. I should save this for Reader Tips … but as I just typed my angry missive, above … I was listening to my pristine copy of Buffalo Springfield (one of my favorite SUPERGROUPS, like Blind Faith, Yardbirds, etc.) dbl lp Buffalo Springfield reissue

    https://www.discogs.com/release/8173642-Buffalo-Springfield-Buffalo-Springfield

This vinyl lp is the only media where you can hear Stephen Stills 9:00 guitar solo studio version of Bluebird. I know I am an old guy and like (love) my olllllld music … but DAMN … if you don’t love and appreciate the utter musical genius of Stills blending and bending multiple music styles in one song!? His angry, ragged staccato guitar is a master class in timing and rhythm. Followed by gentle acoustic riffs … damn! A bloody guitar genius … in 1967. So good.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55q2rRh5UUU

His angry rhythms may have coloured my comment above … putting a sharp edge to it. I blame (credit) Stephen Stills.

      1. Thanks Nancy … Happy Easter to you and yours as well. May the Peace of God, which passes all understanding, guard and keep your heart and mind through Christ Jesus. If you’re not Christian, or religious … please accept that benediction simply in the spirit of love and care.

And May Spring come early to your corner of Canada 🙂

        1. “In the spirit of love and care”

Lijewise, you’re the guy–affable Kenji! Thanks!

          1. Pronounced … ‘ghee ? affable. I’m good with that … hell … I even like GYM 666 NME

    1. I’ve never been a fan, but can’t deny their talent, even though Suite Judy Blue eyes reminds me of fingernails on a blackboard.
To be fair, I’m presently working on Jimmy Yancey’s piano style, so my opinion is probably safely ignored.
I bet I can get an “amen” on that one….

  7. Slow down.. Remember how we were going to be out of oil in ten years? Well, if you think oil is in short supply, wait till you start digging all over the world for the rare elements needed to make the batteries. The same batteries that are not much easier to recycle than the blades on those GodAwful windmills that are killing birds, burning down, requiring helicopters to spray deicer, and totally fukkup the beauty of the world. All you Environmentalists are doing is screwing up. The mining for the elements needed to make the batteries is very intensive. The equipment is huge, uses loads of fuel. Oil is cheap and plentiful. SOME electric vehicles is a fine idea. Try it. PROVE it is a good idea. ALLOW the technology and industry to mature and find its place in the market. The top down demands that WE ARE RIGHT and You Must Yield is getting old.

  8. Just imagine here in Canada, at 6:30 PM every night, 30,000,000 vehicles plugged in, each at, say, 10kW. A sudden increase in demand of 300 GW. In 2021, Canada could produce 141GW.

    https://www.trade.gov/country-commercial-guides/canada-energy

Yes I know Canada is not all in the same time zone, but the statement is illustrative of the idiocy of attempting to replace liquid fuel with electricity.

    1. Robert, look at it a different way. Experts say we need to expand our electricity capacity by 25% to meet the needs of EV charging. That would mean another 35 GW or about enough to recharge 3 million EVs. So someone is out by a decimal place and I don’t think it’s you. This suggests “they” are already designing in a substantial drop in automobiles. Three million autos isn’t even one for every ten families.

      1. As they are doing nothing to increase electricity supply, rather just to make it more expoensive, less available and just plain less, it is obvious to me they (the eco-zealots and wanna-be Davros aristocrats) do not want us to have cars.

  9. It is pointless to debate with the well-duped true believers. They believe in the science fiction of EV life.

I will wait and watch it all fall apart as time goes by and the conspiracies all come true.

Excuse me while I gloat for a moment as I remember how simple and lovely life in North America was through the greatest period in human history regarding freedom, prosperity, opportunity and did I mention FREEDOM?

We all seemed to get along and loved driving our gas guzzlers, cruisin’ for burgers and chicks with roller skated servers at A&W. Gas was a penny’s per gallon.

And Elvis was still in the building.

  10. Tesla owners will be in for a shock when their cars become worthless because they require a $20,000 battery replacement.

  11. The real fun begins when a certain demographic discovers that they can cut off the charging cord and get 25c for it.

    1. Should be a few more bucks worth of scrap copper in those “Fast Chargers”.
Probably easier to get at than those shiny copper ground wires in every substation.
And after the court awarded the family of an electrocuted copper thief compensation,in Alberta, the potential payoffs abound.
