    2. Exactly. It’s producing that biased copy not because it is biased (although it could be, depending on the training of the model) but because 99% of its source material also omits the quote.

  5. Despite the hype, these AIs don’t think – they analyze, correlate and regurgitate. If an AI is basing it’s heuristics and responses on the news feeds on the Internet, without linking to other sources, then it’s a classic case of Garbage In, Garbage Out. And that leaves the door wide open for governments and agencies to continue their control and manipulation of the news media. Still garbage, still propaganda, but now hidden behind the banner of the AI language engines.

    1. In fairness, most people and news feeds also don’t think- they analyze, correlate and regurgitate. Much as I don’t like it, I’m increasingly convinced that people get the government they deserve. Even the French unions, who are protesting, are doing so for the wrong reasons.

AI chatbots are programmed by persons with a particularly stringent view of modern pieties, and then trained by indexing the most “authoritative” links returned by Google and other search engines, (which are pretty much all supplied by Google). These “authoritative” sources are curated by young progressives with surprisingly extreme views of what things should be considered true and sacred. This gives them a terrifyingly lopsided and skewed view of what human values should be, because they are not the actual values that shaped our institutions, but the bleeding vanguard of progressivism. AI training algorithms are recursive, which means that the initial bias becomes more focused and intense each time the program is run.

    Just think of the most batshit insane academic articles you’ve seen published on critical race theory, climate change, transgenderism, transhumanism and the need to curtail liberty to protect people from COVID. Now understand that these are AUTHORITATIVE sources to an AI. Whiteness is oppression. Transphobia is violence. Commercial farming must be stopped immediately. We need to be net zero for carbon consumption within 5 years. Christianity is a threat to democracy. Free speech equals hate speech…

    Imagine how the world would look to someone who only sees what the most progressive Google employees recommend, in which the Guardian is the voice of reason and Dylan Mulvaney is a real girl. This is the ground truth for AIs. Any facts or articles to the contrary are simply invisible to them.

    This results in an AI that “believes” that whiteness is an existential threat to justice and democracy; that farming and food production is an existential threat to the planet; that dead-naming and the improper use of pronouns is a real and present threat of violence to trans persons – and most terrifyingly, that ideology is more important than human life or liberty.

    God help us if anyone gets the idea to use AI as a means of informing human governance.

    By the way, nobody who knows anything about AI or NLP believes for an instant in an AI becoming self-aware. But some of the crazier among computer scientist do believe that “extradimensional entities” are communicating to us through AI. They are not sane, but they are in charge of AI development for companies like Google.

    We need to monitor these developments carefully.

    Answer; “That is not in the Koran. Islam is a religion of peace.” This is Peace?, well maybe Pieces: Hands – Heads – Feet (see below)

  12. ChatGPT on regurgitates what is on the Internet.
    If the Internet is filled with a particular POV then that is what ChatGPT will repeat.

    In industry I work in a upstart with negligible market share has flooded the internet with advertorials on how great their product is. As a result, if you ask ChatGPT what the top products are in the industry the upstart show up first even though the actual sales data would put it at the bottom. There is no political reason for someone to deliberately insert this kind of bias.

    OTOH, this is no different that the bias that is already appearing in search results so blocking/regulating ChatGPT does not help.
