Examining the exaggerated death rate of Canadian Indian Residential Schools.
The Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, never misses an opportunity to give his enthusiastic stamp of approval to any new claim made in the perennial quest for evidence of residential school wrongdoing. Two days after Williams Lake First Nation announced on January 25, 2022, the “discovery” near the St. Joseph residential school in B.C. of “93 potential unmarked graves”, Mr. Miller embarked on a tweetstorm that encapsulated his thinking, or, shall we say, his habitual presumptions, on residential school-related matters.
Among Miller’s tweets on January 27 was the following: “As early as 1909 (1909!!!), Dr. Peter Bryce estimated that the death rate from all causes for those attending residential schools was 18 times higher than that of non-Indigenous people in Canada of the same age [the curious exclamation marks are Miller’s, not mine].”
The “18 times higher” assertion is based on a report that Peter Bryce, Indian Affairs chief medical officer, prepared for the Department in 1909. In looking at mortality in three residential schools – Shingwauk in Ontario, Sarcee in Alberta, and Cranbrook in B.C. – Bryce found that during the period 1892 to 1908 the schools had a death rate of 8,000 per 100,000.[1] If Bryce’s finding for the three schools reflected the overall mortality rate across all of the 60 to 70 residential schools operating in Canada during that time period, the rate in the residential schools would indeed have been approximately 18 times higher than the 430 per 100,000 that Bryce reported for Canada’s general school-age population.
However, the evidence shows that Bryce’s “8,000 per 100,000” death rate was an overstatement for the three schools he studied, and a gross exaggeration of the overall rate for all of Canada’s residential schools operating in the 1892 to 1908 period.

When i was doing family tree. I went to mamy small pioneer cemetaries. All full of children and women.
I have 2 Aunts buried in Norton Alberta. Both died of cholera. In those days they knew little about disease.
My ggreat grandfather and most of his comunity died of cholera in 1820 in Upper Canada. They just threw them in a mass grave.
That was life then.

This ain’t rocket science. There is a shitload of primary sources to track Indian population. There are censuses, baptism records, birth records, death records, school records, band lists, and likely a few more. It is likely possible to track the lives and deaths of 99% plus of Indians since residential schools started. Nobody wants to do that. It is equally likely that every ground anomaly could be explained with a shovel and a couple hour’s time. Again, nobody wants to do that. That would disrupt the narrative and the cash flow.
I’ve done a lot of research. For a couple hundred grand for wages and a couple hundred grand for expenses, I will spend a couple years of retirement in assorted archives and figure it all out. When I’m done, on a similar deal, I would supervise a half dozen big dumb guys for $25 per hour plus subsistence to dig up every suspected residential school grave in Canada. I suspect we’d discover a lot of grandmothers in abandoned community cemeteries and some basements of old buildings but so be it.
In 4 years and less than a million dollars, problem solved. And we would likely save billions in compensation.

What is NOT known is that – by the 1930s – special hospitals called “Preventoriums” were being set up specifically to take in natives (often children) with early symptoms of TB in the hope that the best practices of the day (there being no drugs to cure it) would allow those afflicted to recover and develop a resistance to the disease. But one forgets that TB was a much feared disease among the general population as well; one needs only to read Emily Carr’s book “Pause” to realize the toll it was taking on all groups. Unfortunately, the natives were more susceptible as whites had developed some (but not that much) resistance to same, and their habit of dwelling in small, crowded dwellings contributed to the spread of same.
