I’m not a lawyer, but I was under the impression that kids cannot give legal consent to damn near anything.

Understanding what consent means has nothing to do with it.
‘Consent’ is a distraction.
The point is that children are, but definition, NOT ADULTS.
They haven’t finished growing in both a physical or mental context.
Not only are they physically not ready, but they are mentally experienced enough to be able to make valid life choices.
