  1. As a lifelong conservative … I argue VEHEMENTLY with this former “liberal” that believing MLK Jr’s. “I have a dream speech” is liberal and not conservative nor “ progressive”. It seems Mr. Rubin STILL sees the world from his “lefty” perspective … granting only HIMSELF and his fellow lefties the wisdom of judging a man only by the content of his character. I have ALWAYS agreed with MLK Jr’s DREAM. Always. I have NEVER had a problem with his peaceful, non-violent protests … ever.

The idea that conservatives are equal to Jim Crow loving deep southern crackahs who all fly the stars and bars from their muddy pick ups, and want black folks “in their place” is … well … it’s what you’d call a stereotype. You know … the very thing MLK Jr. was trying to fix. Rubin is a rube. A self-important, prejudiced, lefty. You can take the Lefty out of the left … but you can’t take the left’s orthodoxies out of the lefty? Too harsh? Too prejudiced? Then stop with YOUR stereotyping of “liberals” as pure and noble creatures.

Makes me wonder whether he ever REALLY … walked away

    1. Kenji, purely out of curiosity, do you differentiate between “Leftists” and “liberals”? Or, to be more precise, between “Modern Day Leftists” and “Classical liberals”? Very interested to hear your thoughts on this.

      1. Robert. Yes, of course there is a difference between “classical liberals” and today’s “Progressive leftists”. Liberals still loved and believed in America and our sovereignty. Today’s leftists hate both and want both torn down to the ground. Classical liberals believed in helping people improve themselves and have full, successful lives. Progressives believe in victimhood.

And as a UC Berkeley graduate … classical liberals believed in Free Speech … as opposed to the entire Progressive cabal infecting our government and Silicon Valley. As a lifelong Bay Aryan (wait … that doesn’t sound right, haha) … some of my closest friends and families were raging liberals. But they were never, ever, hateful like the apparent majority of people living here now. The Progressive culture dominant in the Bay Area now is … in a word … nasty. Very nasty people who demand conformance to their beliefs … and God help you if you don’t toe their line. Bay Area Progressives and their Progressive Corporations are Maoists who demand obedience to THEIR Party. Classical liberals were never like this.

And I suppose I would be considered a “liberal” conservative in many respects … but I don’t see it that way. I believe TRUE conservatives want many of the same things liberals want … but we differ on how to best bring that about.

        1. “I believe TRUE conservatives want many of the same things liberals want … but we differ on how to best bring that about.”
This was my typical stance when I was in college, 40 years ago.
I don’t believe it anymore. I’m not as optimistic as Rubin. Eventually, sanity will return but not before it gets much much worse. I am encouraged on how the new right is fighting back and winning people over but I still see dark days ahead.

          1. I tried. Now my question for you. Are you a ‘walk-away’ liberal?
If you are … I still consider you a friend. 🙂

    2. Dave Rubin is one of those “Professional Conservatives” on YouTube who make a living being “Conservative”. Not much to disagree with in what he says, but it all seems a little calculated to me. Maybe that’s just me, but there it is.

Compare and contrast with Rush Limbaugh, a life-long Conservative who made a living doing radio. He did the same thing from the time he was the late-night talker in Rio Linda with an audience of hundreds, to the time he passed away with most of the USA listening. No calculation, but rather an outpouring from his heart. If it was true, he said it. If it wasn’t true, he mocked it.

Still, Mr. Rubin’s points are well considered. The Left has always been about pulling down Western civilization and putting a collectivist tyranny in its place. One need only look at a university these days to see how that’s going to go.

    3. Just curious Kenji where Rubin’s concept of MLK’s speech disagrees with yours?

I think Rubin’s understanding of the ‘progressive /regressive left is bang on.

      1. He cited MLK’s … “not judging one by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character” … as a “liberal” belief. That caught me up short. As I said … I am a lifelong conservative who has ALWAYS held that belief. And I don’t consider it a liberal belief. What it is … is logical … it is natural. It places personal responsibility upon the INDIVIDUAL … which is a fundamentally conservative philosophy.

I agree that classic liberals may hold that belief … and it is the Progressives who are tearing it down in favor of victimology and intervention of The State. But INDIVIDUAL responsibility for one’s CHARACTER is a fundamentally conservative philosophy.

And I would note that it was the “classic liberal” Clinton’s who first FLIPPED the notion of CHARACTER being a valuable personal characteristic. When Bill Clinton was revealed to be the “unholy” (to quote modern “music”) dirtbag that he is … the Clinton’s and the media TOLD the American people that … “character doesn’t count”. So long as the dot.bomb economy … the “new economy” … wherein corporations didn’t need to make a profit to be investment-worthy … was BOOMING! … well … then … the POTUS can be a dirtbag scum sucking sexual harasser of barely-legal chubby girls with self-esteem issues.

      1. Is he? I didn’t know that … and that doesn’t factor into my criticism. In fact … since I don’t know anything about his sexual proclivities … that suggests he has got his priorities straight. Wait. Did I say “straight”?

        1. I don’t believe being a “faggot” disqualifies you from being a conservative. But yes, he’s gay, married to another Dave and they have recently had two kids by separate surrogate mothers.

An interesting sidelight, having met Trump socially, Rubin makes it clear that Trump has no problem with gays. I guess Trump’s not conservative either!

          1. Nor do I. However … being a QUEER absolutely disqualifies you from being a conservative. Sorry. Rubin doesn’t strike me as a queer.

        2. So…. you did not catch, in the video, when he says he is a “married” gay man? You did watch the video, right? Like your comments and insight on the Bay area, by the way.

    4. Rubin is talking about classical liberalism, which is conservative by today’s standards. He’s not not wrong to call himself thay.

  2. Larry Elder changing Dave’s mind about being liberal.

    https://youtu.be/phPXTWJhnYM

Much of it is old news to us but there are some interesting points Larry makes.
And he puts on a master class on how to make a liberal defend their opinions.

Dave is a pretty agreeable sort and mentions that this interview might move him a bit to the right and move Larry a bit to the left.
Larry disagrees and explains that won’t be moving left because he’s heard all the liberal arguments before while Dave hasn’t heard the conservative arguments.

    1. For those who haven’t seen it, Larry Elder beating up Dave Rubin is a classic.

Elder’s use of facts to slap Rubin around is a pure joy to watch.

It’s a shame Elder lost the California gubernatorial race to a slimy greaseball.

  3. At the core of today’s Liberalism is the spoiled child – miserable, as all spoiled children, unsatisfied, demanding, ill disciplined, despotic and useless. Liberalism is a philosophy for snivelling brats.
Anyone or any demographic come to mind?
    Thanks, P.J. O’Rourke.

  4. John of Patmos has some interesting views on recent events too. Everyone would do well to become more familiar with them.

(for the Biblically illiterate, I refer to the Saint John not of Christ’s disciples but the prophet who lived on the Aegean island of Patmos and received what we now know as “the revelation” which is the last chapter of the New Testament)

What we see unfolding around us is basically this prophetic vision. Spoiler alert, the bad guys lose.

    1. Actually he was the Apostle John.
But yes, I agree. Good advice, if you can wade thru the imagery and allegory.
