103 Replies to “Buy the damned planes, finally!”

  1. Is the US insisting, as Trump had done, on NATO members meeting their NATO spend commitments? Will some assembly be required? In Quebec? Batteries not included?

    1. If it was being assembled in Canada, we probably would have heard about it. Italy is doing their own. So is Israel. I think Japan, too. Not sure about the rest. But doubtful Canada is.
I think the realization that history has not, indeed, ended, and that wars will take place, as is happening in Ukraine, was a much larger motivator.

      1. Brian: I can think of two motivators;
        1. Liberal benefactor Bombardier must give approval, as don morris notes below. The federal Liberals “opted to purchase 18 Boeing Super Hornets, without a competition, in the interim… (the Liberals) cancelled that plan after Boeing launched a trade dispute with Montreal aerospace firm Bombardier”. Ooops.

        2. Liberal consultants must give approval. “Procurement expert Alan Williams, who has written critically of the previous (Conservative) federal government’s handling of the F-35 issue, said in an interview with CTV National News that there was “no justifiable reason” to purchase the jets previously without a competition.
But now that it’s the Liberal’s idea: “You know, a decade later, we now have a pretty good idea of costs,” he said. “We know what it can basically do and we ran it through an open fair and transparent competition. So a decade makes a big difference.”. Blacklock should investigate this guy.

        https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/trudeau-s-about-face-on-19b-f-35-fighter-jet-purchase-severely-impacted-air-force-mackay-1.6224040

      2. The F-35 at present, today, is not a bad choice of aircraft. Save the fact that it’s powered by a single engine. The main problem with Trudeau’s ”future deliveries” is that at least seven of the major world powers are now working on their 6th generation fighters to replace the 5th generation such as the F-35. The USA allegedly now has a design that outdoes the F-22 Raptor.

Look at bright side. The Snowbirds will be flying great looking planes!!

      3. Back in the day there was a difference – completely lost by the media – between deciding to buy the then future aircraft, and buying into the project.

Some nations bought in, some just promised to buy.

The nations that bought in are now building parts of the aircraft. From where I sit in Oz there is manufacturing of F35 not one hour’s drive away. You can insert debate on the pros and cons of ‘job creation’, but the point is that these jobs were created and continue to exist.

The other advantage is that the Buy In nations pretty much already have their aircraft now.

    2. Maybe not “assembly en Quebec”, but you can be damned sure that part of the reason this took so long was due to a firm commitment to Bombardier to get at least the maintenance contract, as they did when Canada purchased the F-18’s.
We all fondly remember Canada’s Progressive Conservative PM Brian Mulroney granting the maintenance contract to Bombardier over Bristol Aerospace in Winnipeg, even though Bombardier had NO experience with fighter plane maintenance.
No large federal government contract is ever entered into until they find a way for it to benefit Quebec.

      1. And the Winnipeg Bids were lower too. The resulting slap to Winnipeg resulted in thousands losing existing jobs.

    3. Canada has shortchanged NATO spending since 1988 with the Mulroney Gov’t. That’s the most recent year Canada spent 2% of GDP on military. Maybe the expense of giving the F-18 maintenance contract to Quebec is what brought the level of spending up to par?

Current spending is about 1.36% of GDP and is expected to rise to 1.43% of GDP in 2 years (2024-2025)
I’ve heard in the past that Canada includes military pensions within the 2% of GDP standard, they should be raked over the coals on this. I doubt a MSM dependent upon gov’t handouts and tax credits is going to pipe up too loudly over this.

Tier 2 Canada could buy 1/2 of this number of F-35’s EACH YEAR and still be just under the 2% standard. There’s a $15 Billion shortfall each year on military spending in Canada.

So pick your favorite… Canada could source an aircraft carrier each alternate year, a couple of nuclear powered ice breakers, maybe a few nuclear subs each alternate year, and a whole stack of new armaments and barracks for the military if there were any #Libranos who knew which way was up amongst their ranks.

Instead, tier 2 Canada pisses money away on every conceivable waste of brain power to appease their focus groups, an enormous number of Indian Reserves still don’t have treated water and nobody living on the reserves seems to know how to industrially clean water, while social workers drive around in Cadillacs.

      1. You are right: part of the increase in defense spending in Strong Secure, Engaged (the defense policy) is the result of accounting tricks. They decided that the old way of looking at defense spending in Canada did not include things like pensions to military personnel, IT support, “other departments”, etc etc. So they decided to include it now and presto, we have an increase in defense spending!
Actually by the old metrics, the budget is going down, but something else is going up and I think it’s called “changes to defense policy” or some nebulous BS (I can’t remember the exact term), but it is undefined and contains things like social support (daycare, help to find jobs for ex-servicemen, etc). To the tune of about 0.8% GDP. So the increase is mostly bullshit and contributes less to the old metrics and more to some undefined items that are very loosely associated with the military. The Defense policy (SSE) reads nice, it’s reasonable and “fully costed”, but the problem is that it is “aspirational”, there is no intent to carry it out. Anybody who likes finance and numbers (that excludes me) should read the policy and the acccounting tricks and outright bullshit contained in the document.
The other thing to bear in mind if that if NATO countries spent 2% of GDP on Defense, they would end up out-spending Russia by a factor of about 7. Russia has the GDP of Canada or South Korea (well, it had before Trudeau wrecked our economy). Putin would be an afterthough. I wish we knew how Russia can end up causing soooo much trouble in the world with a GDP the size of Canada! But Orange man said that before and he’s always wrong.

    4. ” … Will some assembly be required? In Quebec?”

You can rest assured that billions ( at least equal to the purchase price) will be shoveled to turdo’s scummy buddies dans la Belle Province. For crucial stuff. Like translation services, printing bilingual labels and decals, etc.

  2. Soon enough for what? To get blown out of the sky when trudope sends them over to Ukraine or some other clusterf-ck? 100% certainty they won’t be used to fight for Canadian’s interests

    1. Is Canada at WAR with someone? Come on maaa’aan … not the genial Canadians? Not the 78% leftist naval gazing Canadians?

    2. Killdozer, my question as well, soon enough for what? The pilots will be retired and I will be dead before we see the order filled. If the defence of canada is the reason, don’t bother, the people are no longer worth defending. The only interest canadians have is what they can get without working and the government just wants slaves and no economy.

      1. Indeed … those 78% leftist Canadians will not be fighting to save Canada … they’ll be learning Mandarin

  3. Coincidence. Like with any advanced technology, it’s obsolete by the time you pay for it and bring it home. One shouldn’t buy the first model/year of anything, unless being paid to work out the bugs.. The fact that the super hornet still exists and is competitive, says something about the venerability of its engineering, improved over the years, like a 1911 pistol (can I still mention it?).

Canada is a large country, with lots of ground to cover and large distances between airfields, so redundancy is a must; 2 engines, possibility of VTOL, capability to be air refuelled, just for starters..

    1. Redundancy of two engines as relevant to size of countey is a spurious argument. It hasn’t been valid for decades. Witness US Navy moving to single engine F-35.
Super Hornet is a super stopgap, existing only due to ill conveived cancellation of A-12.
The reality is that F-35 is the only viable choice. It will be flying for decades, long after any currently available alternatives will be retired. The only problem is the homeopathic quantity that Potato wants to order.

      1. A-12? The precursor to the blackbird?
In that case, we cancelled our own A-12, the Avro Arrow..
Depends on the role of the aircraft, as well, ask any pilot whether they prefer one or more engines.. A-10 Warthog, for example..
Hopefully the f-35 is a good aircraft and will be flying 50 years later, as the f-18 is doing now..

          1. No, it was cancelled like Crusader or RAH-66 a decade later because big wars were not supposed to happen anymore and the world would only do anti-terrorist/asymmetric wars. Worked out great obviously.

          2. COLON
My scrap trailer is empty at the moment, I could use one of those (A-12 avengers) pieces of junk

        1. “Hopefully the f-35 is a good aircraft and will be flying 50 years later, as the f-18 is doing now.”

          Not a chance.

          1. Actually that is pretty much guaranteed. Given how it outsells everything else it will be the standard for decades with consecutive upgrade packages mushrooming every few years. It will be like F-16.

          2. When they retire the F-18, in 2032, it will have been in service 50 years. Some front line USAF aircraft are about that old too (F-15, F-16). The F-35 will be around for a long time. I’d wager a bet with you, but we’ll both be gone when they retire the F-35.

      2. These planes are useless, and will never see a single day of combat. Even if that sad day were to come, $250 million airplanes being knocked out of the sky by $100,000 drones is not good arithmetic.

Canada would have been far better off to have an internal drone competition, and build out our own native drone defence force.

        1. Dontcha know, Canada’s armed Forces are expeditionary. They will see some action in the 50+ years they will be in service.

  4. The only reason they’re ordered is because the yellow little prick is afraid of a revolution.

A chip off the old block. His old man shit his pants and called in the military.

    1. I tend to agree, the truckers scared the shit out of him and his collection of thieves he calls a cabinet.

I rather expect that internal polling and intelligence is showing that there is a level of seething rage in the population not seen since forever in Canada

  5. These will not be used to defend Canada, Canada, as we knew it, no longer exists, and probably hasn’t for a long, long time. Canadians should wake up to the fact that they are now ex-pats of a country that no longer exists, a country that is simply a WEF district now. When was the last time a shot was fired in anger to defend Canadian borders? Of what value are these when our own leaders are importing hundreds of thousands of foreigners a year?

    1. I think their value is to “maintain a ruled-based world order”, as the Defense Minister whats-her-face alluded to. You can interpret that the way you want. It may not immediately benefit the average Canadian, I’ll give you that.

  6. I’m not up on such things but will the F35s just end up just being expensive targets for hypersonic missiles? I notice that Australia is getting subs with nukes while we still allow the Chicoms to secure seats for the Spawn in our elections. Do we even have ABMs? We allow the Spawn along with his cheerleading media to pretend that we have an interest in Biden’s proxy war in the Ukraine which, will likely result in a rebalance in the ME as Turkey will leave NATO and align with Russia (and Syria, Iran, Yemen, etc) while the Euroweenies and their UK Wefer toady push NATO into a potential nuclear war. Could we even field a single Division from our Army?

    1. Probably correct, John. As we are now seeing in Ukraine. piloted aircraft are becoming a thing of the past, slowly being displaced by drones. F-35s will likely be the last manned combat aircraft interceptors purchased by the RCAF.

      1. That’s the reason they gave for scrapping the Arrow by the way. Manned aircraft will be around for a while, but they certainly will end up having little friends helping out. The US Navy is near fielding a drone refueler (the stingray)

    2. “I’m not up on such things but will the F35s just end up just being expensive targets for hypersonic missiles? ”

Doubtful, since the over-hyped ‘hypersonic’ missile is only capable of taking out large stationary or slow moving targets. They are almost useless against aircraft.

    3. John…

We haven’t had a “division” in 65 years, hells bells we don’t even have a Regiment of fully trained combat ready troops…nor hardly any way to transport them anywhere…Uber may come in handy.

Still using a 1930’s Browning 9mm as a sidearm…I’m actually surprised they aren’t using the FN C1/C2 today. As with every aspect of our military materiel…its either 50+ yrs old and being repaired ala Cuba style (fitting though eh.?), Light Vehicles that cant handle IED’s, helo’s that were obsolete in 1972, and subs that sink…but cant float. Add in the purposeful destruction of Esprit de Corps, by killing off the Various Regimental Names…and what do you end up with…??
“men” wearing skirts n lipstick ffs.

A Bloated Military bureacracy with more useless Guilded Senior officers than combat ready troops – one that resembles your avg South American ensemble. A Litany of Arrogant Liberal ignorance brought to you by Quebecified LIBERAL COWARDS since I was a kid.

When was the last time the French ever won a Battle…??

      1. Steak: “The Battle of Castillon between the forces of England and France took place on 17 July 1453 in Gascony near the town of Castillon-sur-Dordogne (later Castillon-la-Bataille). Historians regard this decisive French victory as marking the end of the Hundred Years’ War.” From wikipedia.

See,it wasn’t all that long ago!

          1. was that the last time the french won a battle. sounds about right . at the arc de triomphe i once offered the crowd 20 euros to find me the word waterloo. I was entertained for hours in the line up .

      2. But we have brand new programs that insure the proper pronouns are used and the military dress code allows you to express your identity. They plan to disgust the enemy to death – if they don’t die laughing.

    4. You have to see it first, before it sees you. This is why stealth is a must for a modern fighter. The Aussie are not getting nukes. They are getting nuclear propulsion subs. Last question: Nope.

      1. “You have to see it first, before it sees you. This is why stealth is a must for a modern fighter.”

Bingo! And something that ought to be chiseled into the sloping foreheads of fighter mafia disciples who proclaim that stealth is useless because you can’t indefinitely loiter over the target without being detected or some such.

      2. “The Aussie are not getting nukes. They are getting nuclear propulsion subs. ”

And yet Canada, with much more need for nuclear boats (for under-ice operation), won’t get even one.

  7. Liberal-leftist twitter isn’t happy about the purchase either, as seen by reading the replies to…

Anita Anand @AnitaAnandMP Canada government official
Today, I announced that Canada is acquiring a new fleet of 88 F-35 fighter jets. This project is estimated at $19 billion – making it the largest investment in our @RCAF_ARC in three decades. This project will ensure that our aviators have the tools they need to defend Canada.

    https://twitter.com/AnitaAnandMP/status/1612476995325284354

    1. If they are upset about that.
Think how po’d they will be when they find out about the agreement to buy that US. missile defence system.
Oh wait, Leisure Suit Larry will be buying it for Ukraine, all good.
      What did we get again?

      1. By the time Canada takes deliver of the 1st jet Ukraine will be in the rear view mirror and the Bong will be a distant memory.

  8. And there is one more thing you have to give Trudeau credit for – he always said we needed 88 planes, not the 65 Harper said.
Put the brakes on Skippy, that might be true now but it certainly wasn’t back in the day. I distinctly remember petite potato telling everyone who would listen that new F-35s weren’t the way to go at all. In fact he promised to scrap Harper’s F-35 procurement plan, set up a bidding process (Which is a cutesy way of making sure the F-35 would never win only because Harper liked them) and funnel the savings purchasing ice breakers and assorted Navy upgrades. Actually he accused Harper of having an unhealthy fascination for the F-35.
    Credit where credit is due.

There’s a major war on right now – one that could at any time include us, should the Russians decide to roll into Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia or Finland (likely to become a NATO member any day now).

Yup, let’s mix it up with a nuclear super power…what could possibly go wrong? Sheesh…get a grip on yourself.

    1. Burton, I think you’re on to something when you speak of a war.

That’s the pattern that turd is following.

      Why 88 now?

Think of the carbon footprint that will leave.

    1. “Also announced: a NASAMs battery purchased for Ukraine. Yay!”

Drawing the conflict out even longer and resulting in even more dead Ukrainians? Awesome.

      1. Allan S and his ilk are so full of hatred that they consider 1000 dead Ukes to kill one Russian a bargain.

        1. Shitstains like Hobot will send millions to Siberian gulag just to see Western World humiliated.

      2. You care so much for Ukrainians, as long as they don’t get to decide for themselves.

        1. “You care so much for Ukrainians, as long as they don’t get to decide for themselves.”

I must care about them more than you, since you seem to want them all dead. “Free”…but dead…

          1. They made a choice to fight on their feet rather than to die on their knees. You’re a scumbag who would deny them this choice and send them to a gulag. Like Hobot you’re below dogshit.

    2. NASAMS is an economical solution for all the AMRAAMs no longer airworthy that need recycling in every NATO arsenal, but the range is much lower when launched from the ground, it is a stopgap. They need Patriots for mid range to replace the S-300s and they need CAMM to replace Buk for mid to short range.

      1. “They made a choice to fight on their feet rather than to die on their knees. You’re a scumbag who would deny them this choice and send them to a gulag. Like Hobot you’re below dogshit.”

        Seek help.

  9. New F18s were my preference. Unfortunately the idiots at Boeing made a trade complaint against Bombardier that severely effed them up so no Boeing aircraft will ever again be purchased by any Canadian government.

  10. The F-35 is an extremely capable weapons system.
IMHO, its overkill for what Canada needs for defense.
Defense appropriation is always an exercise in jingoism.
The Swedes make planes that are much better suited to Canada’s needs, but its not about value for cost, and it never was.

    1. Why would you argue that Gripen is a solution for Canada? It is an older plane that will probably be retired before the latest F-16s. It seemed great when it entered service but it flopped on export market, very few were sold and the upgrade market will be short lived.

    2. The Gripen flew a few years after the F-18, it is last gen aircraft. How do we know? The Swedes have already signed on to a European project to replace them. “But it can land on highways!!!”. Well, some F-35s can land on a boat. But the point is that for 40 years, we’ve never had to land on a road. And highways are kinda hard to come by aroud Inuvik.

      1. “The Gripen flew a few years after the F-18, it is last gen aircraft.”

The Gripen is a great second-tier fighter for smaller nations who can’t afford the F-35, absolutely.

    1. If you don’t have control of your own airspace, you don’t have sovereignty. It’s that simple.

      1. “If you don’t have control of your own airspace, you don’t have sovereignty. It’s that simple.”

True….and the very same reason that we need a nuclear sub or two if we intend to defend the arctic as Canadian territory.

    2. “We don’t need them.”

If we need any fighters at all, we might as well have the best we can afford…preferably the same ones that our NATO allies are using.

  11. After Feb 24th someone must have taken the Bong aside and explained how the world works in terms even he could understand.

He has moved on the China file. Not a long way – but there is a noticeable change of policy.

He now has purchased new jets for the military. To be fair negotiations for them have been in the works for years. He did make sure he was out of the country when the announcement came that he bought the Harper jets. hahaha

    1. “Harper jets” Those are last millennium jets – Chretien’s babies. Been flying over 16 years. Design prototype flew over 22 years ago. We are on our 3rd PM since then.

      1. Do you mean the China problem from Harper handing China the keys to the kingdom?, aka the Canada-China FIPA?

  12. Where is peace loving anti war NDiPper Jagged Meat objecting???
    HMMMM?
    Any time now……………..

  13. 88 jets is a much too low a number, and “stealth is about to become useless. The Chinese have developed radar that can detect it, and maybe the Serbs have also. And then there is ATC, long wave radar that can detect it. Optical guidance systems are already a thing. Sooooo, stealth will be useless in less than 10 years. BTW Russia already has optical guidance systems, as does Israel if I’m not mistaken. It would be better to by 200 super hornets, or the new 4 1/2 gen saabs, or F16-V, or latest F15, and develop better detection systems and guidance systems.

    1. “…stealth is about to become useless….”

Here we go again, same song since Serbs got lucky once with a first gen stealth (F-117). Enema 69 knows better than all the NATO countries lining up for F-35s. Must be also why US is buying B-21 and why new cruise missiles are stealth too. Must be why Chicoms, russians and Koreans are investing heavily in stealth. Must be why the two Euro sixth gen programs are going to be stealth.

Pierre Spray at an RT interview told you?

Also, complete lack of understanding what stealth gives you.

      1. yup McColon, how’s that R~4 working out, and that is the value of your opinion. Yes China has radar that can detect stealth. USA had anomalies detection ability, they use to track subs, from space. Try keeping up unCOLON. Stealth blinds shore wave radar signals, which missiles use, but you can use ATC radar to locate, and then transmit to fighters, which can direct missiles, like I say, try keeping up GOOF. In case you ain’t aware, some of what I post has been tried, successfully !

        1. Yes, we know you have no clue what you’re barking about and don’t understand the purpose of stealth. Feel free to carry on being retarded and remember to dial Pierre Sprey up to eleven.

  14. I will always buy lunch or dinner for our troops If I see some in a restaurant. So far not had to pay anything as I never see our guys and gals in the civilian world.

Trudope was forced to buy the F35 as he would be really embarrassed when NATO asks him how goes the ability to defend Canada if the Russians move into our Arctic.

  15. A further consideration knowing the Liberals, beyond everything being in metric and also converted to french, labeled appropriately for both, and palms greased accordingly, they will require rainbow emblems, and gender neutral, non binary personpits. the plane will be designed to veer left, and cost more in maintenance than production. By the time Liberals, okay and actually receive these things, Musk will be offering Mars vacations.

  16. Soon enough? You mean before nuclear Armageddon? Before Putin opens a second front and invades Canada?

News alert Canada…you are far more likely to die from an asteroid than suffer an invasion.

Here’s a sure bet. Those planes will be used in an attack long before they are used in the service of defending Canada.

    1. I think people that are worried Russia will invade Canada (bypassing Alaska?) should go to the Arctic for a few months. Try to run some operation that requires some sort of Logistic support for machines and people. Doesn’t matter if it’s in the summer of winter. If you’re interested, Canada did an experiement in 1946 (called operation Muskox) to see if it was possible.

  17. Isn’t 88 also HH which is Heil Hitler!!
    Juthtin’s a Nazi!
And a retarded, lying, latent homo, douchebag, coward.

    1. Well he certainly didn’t just realize the importance of air superiority in a battle.

Brandon and Blackface Hitler get their 10% and also 88 keys on a piano and Hi-ya, big lucky number in China too.
Did Socky McBlackface run this through his personal Feng Shui guy or his travelling piano player . ( Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality Open your eyes, look up to the skies and see I’m just a poor boy)

    1. Think of an aircraft that can see you before you can see it. Actually, it can see everything its buddies can see, even if those buddies are drones or AWACS. The pilot can see through the aircraft too. The missiles for up close work are linked to that helmet and work off-boresight – we already have those on the F-18 and they are called AIM 9x. For farther away, the latest version of the AMRAAM has about the range of the old Phoenix carried on the Tomcat. I think the days of going round and round until you get angles are gone.

    2. The stupidity with the F35 was not building a Harrier 3 for the Marines. One size fits all meant too many compromises.

      1. Yeah I’m on the fence about that VTOL version. Impressive technology but it just looks to complicated and asking for trouble. But I guess they needed something to put on those short-ass carriers. We’ll see how that Lighting carrier concept pans out. Throw in that V-22 in the mix and you really wonder if the Marines have taken one too many on the noggin.

        1. V-22 works well. The replacement for Blackhawk will be similar configuration but smaller.

  18. Israel uses the F-35 in combat. They like the plane and want more. They use it virtually every week to launch missiles at targets in Syria and Syria’s Russian radar/missile system can’t do a damn thing. At present 16 nations use F-35’s. Canada is number 17. If the F-35 was a bad platform theses countries would buy something else. They don’t. End of story. Stop with the stupid articles saying the plane is bad. That is hogwash.

    1. I expect to see a lot of disinfo on the F-35 to go away now that its competitors are out of th running. Or maybe not, it helps if the enemy thinks you’re flying junk. Of course, the enemy isn’t stupid and knows this thing can kick ass. Even the Swedes are looking for a replacement for that old gen Gripen they were trying to sell us.

  19. A day late and a dollar short, as they say.

Another expensive, pacifying move that will go nowhere.

Justin is not a real leader and no one thinks that he really is, not even his piggies at the trough.

  20. Of course we were going to buy, whatever the Americans are flying,in this case the F35.
How else could we maintain the pretence of being “Combat Ready..?
Unless we are able to “borrow” parts, munitions and fuel from our American protectors.
Can Ahh Duh has not been a serious country since Pierre The Idiot, now we have Justine the Petulant taking us down for good.
Unless the F35s has been refined and slimmed down a whole bunch since it was first showcased,we will be buying the best of no worlds.
look to past experience with war planes..The plane that can do everything always winds up doing nothing well.

  21. well John, I remember the Gary Powers U-2 incident, that plane flew too high for USSR missiles , except it didn’t. The USSR never hit the plane, they just got close and shrapnel took Gary out. And that is how they can, and will , take down stealth . Also, how useful is the 35 against Russian hyper sonic missiles?
BTW: I like the 35, great plane, but too late in the game, and this Uke Rusky war proves that, missiles rule!

    1. “Also, how useful is the 35 against Russian hyper sonic missiles?”

What hypersonic missiles is the F-35 suppose to dodge now? What are you talking about now? Who do what? Would it kill you to be semi coherent for a change?

“Uke Rusky war proves that, missiles rule!”

Ukrainian war proves that Siberians are unable to suppress Ukrainian air defenses, not “that missiles rule”. Had Siberians tried to tango with NATO their air defenses would be curb stomped.

Listen, you’re really really stupid and you should not talk. Ask a person closest to you to apply a brick to your snout and your fingers so you can no longer disseminate your stupid.

  22. Assembled in Fort Worth, shipped to Canada, handed over to (checks future notes, is it still Ukraine or Taiwan or Poland, or, or?).

  23. Interesting commentary, as always..

The question is, will petit patatte get a chance to whip out his f-35’s or not? Only the shadow knows!
