Do we have any readers who’ve made the move?
Armstrong Economics- The Flight to Mexico
The Biden Administration has been at war with fossil fuels from the beginning, despite trying to blame Putin. This has benefited Mexico from a value perspective, but while claiming to be on board with this Great Reset, they are not as gun-ho as Canada and the USA.
Our capital flow model has been pointing to tremendous inflows to Mexico since they have had the best anti-COVID mandates so there are a lot of Europeans leaving for South and Latin America and Mexico has been a primary target.
This trend appears to be continuing into 2024.
I’ve been hearing this A LOT in my personal network of non insane people.
My wife and I moved to Lake Chapala south of Guadalajara from Muskoka, Ontario in June 2020. We bought a house twice as large as the one we sold in Canada for half the price. We basically live on our CPP/OAS. The weather is perfect year-round, the food is great, the people are friendly, the cost of living is very affordable and, unlike Canada, there is no-one telling you what to do all the time. Covid restrictions and lockdowns were virtually non-existent. I am unvaccinated, not that anyone has ever asked. There is very little violence here and none against foreigners. I have no desire to return to Canada; the kids and grandkids can come visit me here. I’ll even pay, if that’s what it takes!

It’s on our short list. We’re going back there soon for a vacation for the first time in three years. Mexico is not the only place we’re looking at but we definitely don’t want to stay in Canada.

BUILD A WALL, TOP IT WITH RAZOR WIRE, DOT IT WITH MACHINE GUN TOWERS… AND LAY LAND MINES…
There are now almost 100,000 people missing in Mexico, according to figures released by the National Search Commission.
The majority have disappeared amid the drug war violence of the past decade and a half, with most being killed by drug cartels
and dumped in unmarked graves.”
Sounds pretty cozy to me.

But what about the gang violence?
Leave Winnipeg out of this!
Hi, I live close to the border in Texas.
We do not go to Mexico at any time anymore. just too dangerous. The cartels are everywhere.
No place is safe, even in your own compound. Try Belize or someplace like it.
My husband and I were planning to. He’s actually from Mexico and we met while I was temporarily living there. We held off for now but it’s still in the future plans. Depends on several factors including how bad Canada gets.
My husband isn’t a Canadian citizen either so moving to his country is also an option. There’s some nice, out of the way places to live in the US. The kids getting dual citizenship could be beneficial in their future.
That’s where we’re at because my wife is an American citizen but we’re waiting for the election in November. We’re looking at rural Missouri, Arkansas or maybe Tennessee. Someplace with a bit of winter and no alligators.
We’re waiting to see how things play out in the US too. I have a brother with dual citizenship who lives in Texas and a cousin in Texas too. I’d lean towards Oklahoma but Tennessee looks interesting.
For my parents, North Dakota and Montana are also possibilities. Close to Canadian family, similar climate and geography.
Missouri and Arkansas are great options. Very few Canadians are familiar with that area since they focus on California, Arizona, or Florida. But the Ozarks are beautiful and inexpensive in comparison. Just like the other more popular states, get out before the snakes show up in May!

Son has an opportunity to take a job with a growing company in Nashville, Tennessee.
We might just make the move if he jumps. Thinking of buying a 50 acre chunk of rural
property with separate houses for him and us. Only heard good things about the city…
milder winters, no personal income tax and, bonus… constitutional carry state.
Wouldn’t miss Ontari-owe at all.

Have friends that moved from Florida to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee about three years ago. They love it. Several of their Florida friends subsequently followed them, and more are on the way.
Its on the Cumberland Plateau with cooler summers relative to lowland TN. Mild winters. Lots of golf courses, with some open year round.

We looked at this strongly. It’s easy to get Temp and Permanent Residency, if you have modest investments.
Haven’t ruled it out, but, as we got serious about it, we could also see the tide turning here, albeit grudgingly, from the commies and statists in Victoria and Ottawa. So, it’s a back burner option. We also have elderly family to watch out for.
FYI, EVERYTHING about Mexico is also getting more expensive.
Food
Homes to buy, and rent
Hotels and travel.
Like it or not, much of Mexico is owned by Americans and valued in Am dollars. If you’re considering going there, the cheap days are gone.
Needless to say, security is also a YUGE problem there too
You’d have to be insane to move to Mexico.
.
Corrupt beyond human comprehension.
.
Crime totally out of control.
It’s a Narco-State
.
And on top of that being a “GRINGO” ??
.
You loco ??
So… it’s like Saskatchewan?
Greg
Buk Buk Buk booook, Chicken soup for you!
Mexico is a corrupt and dangerous Third World country.
Only the truly desperate Will move there. Talk to any Mexican expatriates and you will quickly get the idea of what I’m talking about.
Drug gangs go wherever they want throughout the country.
We have some friends in Colima and we we were considering going there. They said the same thing. They are in the process of getting out.
I lived in Latin America for 23 years. I am and always have been a Canadian citizen. Born in the GTA area. Latin America is very dangerous. Especially to foreigners who stand out because of how they look (can anyone say racism?). I am a man, I was never afraid. Follow certain logical behaviours and you will be ok (don’t carry valuables, always cooperate with criminals, mind your own business, turn a blind eye to corruption, etc.). The police are of no help in the land of the lawless.
I moved back to Canada about 12 years ago after the drug lords came to power. They are now politicians themselves, not just paying the politicians. The real problem with living in these countries is for females. I have a wife and 3 daughters. It is not safe for women. This is not sexist, the problem is, you cannot leave your sex at home. You will be raped. Count on it. Husbands and fathers will be killed if they try to stop it. This is the only reason I left and the only reason I do not return. It is impossible to protect the females in your family. If they are not raped by criminals, they are just as likely to be raped by the police.
Mexico is a little better (less violent crime) than the country I lived in, but same problems.
Don
So…?? Where were you.?
Guatemala or elsewhere in zcentral America…or Venezuela. ??
I’m thinking Chile might well be an option. Wife is fluent Spanish speaker (Italian born in Argentina)…which is also an option.
the gun murder rate is higher in the US..
the total murder rate is nine times the US rate.
maybe gringos are not in that stat??
Oh come on, the cartels only have total control of 25% of Mexico.
I have a general resistance to moving because of politics.
I agree with some of the commenters above who warn about the extreme violence and corruption. I read this morning that the cartels control about 40% of Mexico and that the current president is soft on them, maybe even associated with them.
Also, I would be very careful about making a decision based on pleasant holiday experience.
I won’t move because of politics either, but I am now a stranger in a strange land in my home town. The city I live in is very rapidly being Islamized. Some things can’t be fought, ignored or lived with. If I’m going to die a stranger in a strange land, it might as well be somewhere warm.
Don’t run. Choose your Fight.
Just like all the other economic migrants. Things are rough at home, so they FO to allegedly greener pastures, instead of staying home to try to hold things together.
I guess, in the end, that we don’t really want those people here, anyway.
Good riddance.
Several Mennonite families from southwestern Ontario went back there to the colonies that still had family members. Others went to Saskatchewan and Alberta. The colonies are away from the cities from what I know. That doesn’t mean they are immune from crime.
Only Soviet communities are free of crime.
i know a Mennonite family who moved to Uruguay , they enjoy it. I was in Uruguay about 3 years ago and found it boring . But looking back that’s what one wants in the end times.
If you are not squeamish , do a search for this website. “Borderland beat”. It reports about modern day Mexico.

The only vacation destination, you’re ever likely to hear the phrase, “Mountain of severed heads”…
“Gunmen from Mexican narco-terrorist Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion burned off the face of
a rival and recorded the man’s agony as he begged for death.”
I think I’ve heard of these pharmaceutical bon-vivants…
“Cartel Jalisco New Generation gunmen kidnapped, castrated and murdered a rival group of
men in Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz.”

Yes, stay away from the border area, but the vast majority of Mexico is as safe as Canada or the US. The nice thing about this misconception is that it keeps most of the Karen types out!
I’m holding out for Elon Musk’s planetary conquests. I’m getting my own planet. And, wait until you see the hoops I put people through just to be able to visit.

Not Mexico. Problem with being a foreigner in third world countries is that if things go sideways you will be at the front of the target list. We are looking at a couple places but it’s not ideal to be an old white guy from abroad in the middle of a Latin American revolution.
I winter (6 months per year) in Arizona, about 80 miles north of Mexico. Was thinking of maybe going to Baha beaches for two-three months this year. My thoughts:
– Mexico is dangerous in specific places, just like my USA is dangerous in specific places. I know where to avoid here. I’d just have to learn where to avoid in Mexico.
– The high peso right now is not a help.
– Gasoline is plentiful down there. (RV’s eat a ton of it.)
– I have friends who have made the leap to nice apartments/condos in small touristy towns down there. They love it. They live cheaply but well, most Mexicans in their areas can do some English (most of my friends can do some simple Spanish, but not much), and the people are mostly very nice to expatriates from the US.
Outside of gang areas – like saying “outside of Chicago” – Mexico is a conservative, religious, family-first place. Doesn’t sound bad at all.
(ETA: Oh, and, it never snows, your wet dog doesn’t freeze to the back deck, and you don’t need engine block heaters ever!)
I know of a couple that made that move. I would not, personally. Have known people that did not do well in Mexico.
But Mexicans are very fine people in my experience.
Made the move 15 years ago. I know a little bit about security and safety as I was previously an Infantry Officer and a Police Officer.
Those that use a broad brush to paint the entire country as dangerous are misinformed – and I hate that word. I could bore you with stats on the overall tourist numbers compared to violent crime, however, bottom line, violent crime against law abiding Canadians is statistically a non-issue.
Any of the major tourist destinations, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Playa del Carmen, Cancun, as well as some of the lesser-known areas like Lake Chapala and San Miguel are as safe as Vancouver, Calgary and especially Toronto.
The caveat, of course, is that, as a Canadian, if you enjoy hanging out in Forest Lawn in Calgary, the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, or Jane and Finch in Toronto, you’ll likely end up dead, sooner or later, if you hang out in equivalent places in Mexico.
The value proposition is a strong one…. $150,000 USD (or less depending on area) will get one comfortable condo or small house in a safe area. Property taxes are super low. Cellular is cheap. Labour is cheap. …. It’s financially a very comfortable country to retire in…. with zero requirement for Spanish (although it’s a good thing to learn).
There’re certainly challenges and things that require getting used to, however, I can’t ever imagine moving back north.
