Banging your head against the wall

Since the last two centrist/Red Tory federal leaders got nowhere electorally, one could reasonably expect that a different approach might be warranted. But not according to those whom Margaret Thatcher famously referred to as “the wets”. Mimic the Liberals, they say, or else…

“There will not be a new political party or anything until the next election because this leader has to be given a shot, right? But if we fail for the fourth time in a row, if we lose the next election, then, you know, all the cards are off the table,” predicted Peterson.

The only way to win, he argued, is to find a way to appeal to “moderate, pragmatic, middle-of-the-road Canadians” who do not see themselves in the other more progressive parties.”

  1. Principals before pragmatism has been my mantra for the last few elections. I will not support liberal lite Conservatives. If that means we are cursed with Trudeau forever, so be it. I’ve stood my ground.

    1. There is a silver lining.
The country won’t exist much longer if leisure suit Larry gets to remain PM.
Then you get your new country.
He also gets the blame for destroying the one we have now.

What about appealing to the everyday Canadians who lined the highways and overpasses for the Freedom Convoy?

      1. No. Trucker support was close to 50%. Your figures must be something the Toronto Star came up with.

    1. What about convincing the 40% that doesn’t vote that it is actually worth voting, that there are choices?

      1. Good friend of mine says that, “If voting actually mattered, they wouldn’t let us do it”. He’s not wrong!

  3. Nonsense.
Division is what “democracy” is about. Just because any disagreement in “conservative” circles is illuminated to a much higher degree doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist in all parties.
Fretting about it publicly is just an attempt to marginalize right wing voices.
Challenging a known liberal running for the leadership of a Conservative party is is necessary. Even harshly.
Remember where everyone thinks the same no one thinks very much.

If “conservatives” lack anything it’s not knowing how to communicate their message.
They need to recognize that people don’t like to be sold. They want to buy.

    1. If “conservatives” lack anything it’s not knowing how to communicate their message.

      Can’t emphsaize that enough.

  4. If the leader has to give up being a conservative in order to get elected, then what’s the point? Just look at the current election in Ontario, nothing to choose between them. Pierre Poilievre is the only conservative in the leadership field and, therefore, the only possible choice. I have my doubts that he’ll be able to bring it off, but then I don’t live there any more substantially for that reason.

    1. Leslyn or Max are the only real choices for Conservative people. Pierre is a lifelong politician, like Charest, and has the same dark connections. Leslyn is the only one willing to stand by her beliefs, the others are conducting polls to see if they should stand for something.

      1. Well, to the MAX obviously. I’d like tp know who backs Leslyn financially.

      2. Indiana Jane:

You should watch the Jordan Peterson interview of Pierre Poilievre. Clearly he is the ONLY choice of true conservatives.

AND, what are those spooky dark connections?

Is not having been a life long politician intrinsically good. Trudeau wasn’t, and sunny ways didn’t materialize.

    2. Poilievre has one quality that makes him a good choice in spite of what his platform is.
He’s driving the establishment mouth foaming mad and tormenting them as much as they have been tormenting the majority that don’t need government parenting.

    3. well, you could vote for:

      the Papulist Ford
      the Corrupt Dr Evil clone
the Orange with the anti-semitism problem
      or the Green Lunacy

we have a wide selection of bad choices

  5. “O’Toole ultimately shifted more to the political centre in the 2021 election”

This is the crux of the problem. OFool moved TO THE LEFT in the election, which cost him. Who is Rick Petersen? Another Red Tory I presume, with no ease of what a real conservative is. No doubt, he’s a Charest crony.

    1. In Canada there is only Centre, Centre-Right, and far Right extremist.

      There is no “left”.

      1. Must be dislexic there Jeff, the Conservatives are currently to the left of the US Democratic party. There is no Right wing in Canada we only have the Loony Left (Greens), Loser Left (NDP) Looting Left (Liberals) and the Centre-Left Pretenders (Conservatives). The Conservatives haven’t been right of centre for decades and were only financially right but socially left under Harper. It could be that you consider Communists to be right wing, that might explain your viewpoint.

  6. Regardless of who the Conservative Leader is, if he doesn’t get the blessing of the bought and paid for lame stream media, he’s already lost.
Paying attention to whom the Media promotes or ignores will tell the thinking voter a lot. Good luck with that.

    1. Even if Pierre wins the leadership of the CPC the MSM will go full Trucker Convoy crazy and voters will get the message.

Woke Progressive hegemony was attained in 2015. It’s entrenched now. 2011 will likely never happen again.

  7. When you understand how the cpc chooses the leader it would be surprising if Charest doesn’t end up being the leader. Pierre is palatable, but Charest is pretty much a Trudeau clone. Pretty much our only real hope is the ineptitude and corruption combined with the out of control cost of living make people realize there isn’t much left to loose and we dissolve this circus.

  8. The Blue Crested Laurentide Bloodsucker, thinks voting matters?
After trampling our God given rights and freedoms ,because they are afraid, they think voting will accomplish anything?
    We are controlled by aliens.
When every branch of the Canadian Confederated Uni-Party proudly proclaims us as property, their property, to use and inject as they see fit, then it is time they enjoy the sheer pleasure of being treated as they have chosen to treat others.
I will be immensely cheered by the shrieking and hollering from these same parasites, when their human rights and freedoms are being stripped.

For people too stupid and evil to live by the golden rule ,always trigger Retribution.
    Canada is gone.
The dream is corrupted and poisoned.
Western Canada can and will separate, because we have nothing in common with our Eastern Comrades…Except our income..

Funny they seem intent on crippling every economic venture out here, but they really really want to “help us” spend our money.
On them and their welfare Kleptocracy.

What is “The Conservative Party of Canada” conserving?
    The Milch Cow?

    Do they stand for anything?
    Anything of value to me?
Every single member of Parliament failed us.
338 Statist Thugs or silent enablers..
Did you hear one, just one, speak up for our God Given Rights and Freedoms?
    I did not.
Apparently they honoured their oath to “Uphold the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms”,just like all those cops..
Easily honoured, because we have zero rights and freedoms under that corrupt document.

So voting for the Cons does what?
The line is crossed, how do you “Return to normal”?
Knowing that in progressive Canada you are not seen as humans..
    Property of The State..
A work of fiction ,which serves the most organized thugs.

    1. When Canadians understand that they vote for servants not leaders things will change. Stupid people do not grasp that very simple fact.

    2. The Charter?
      That document is flawed.
It was written to tell the lesser citizens what rights the state has deemed allowed (for today, until it becomes an impediment) as opposed to a document restricting the government from what it can and shall not do.
If the founding document has in its first couple of paragraphs any statement that makes it law that the government is above you the intent of said document was never to protect you, it was written to protect the government.

      1. the Charter was written by people who believe all rights come from the government, much in the same was as the Soviet constitutions was written.

there is only 1 that recognizes that all rights belong to the people, and government is supposed to protect those rights

  9. The columnist is regurgitating the same “centrist” talking point loved by official Ottawa.
    Let’s deal in absolute numbers.
Namely the number of voters that did not cast a ballot which according to actual results is about 36-40% of the eligible voters out there.
Now juxtaposition that number to what’s being offered during the campaign as “centrist” and explain why the non voting block keeps increasing every election?
Could it be that the folks that keep using the term “centrist” and “moderate” isn’t what the majority of voters want, but vote using a means test of least worse option, or they stay home on Election Day?
Last time I checked, the so-called angry voters are getting fed up with the centrist, moderate, business as usual establishment and are looking for a chance to decentralize, and unsettle the established way things have been running after having the folks in charge interfere too much in their lives. If asked most if not all of the non-voting would say they just want the government to leave them in peace and let them live their own lives as they see fit.
The politician that gets that is entering the next election with a big advantage, and that’s not something any of the party establishments (or their pundits) fully grasp except to express dire warnings lest any politicians dare speak such things.

  10. I supported the CPC for years, but I will never again support a legacy party. ALL of them brought us to this point, none of them deserve my time.
For now, my support goes to the PPC, but if I don’t see a large uptick in support for them, I will conclude that Canada as I know it is finished. I will then put all my support into whatever party has the best chance of getting the West out of confederation.

  11. We are not voting our way out of the gulag formerly known as Canada.
Freedom is not granted, it is taken.
