  4. Seeing the video about the dog reminds me of what happened with my canine step-brother shortly after my father died. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating.

    I wanted to make sure that he had a good home as I was in no position to take care of him even if I wanted to. I had a hard time finding someone in Fort St. John willing to take him in until I could decide what to do with him, though I managed to locate a few people in the Edmonton area who were interested.

    My plan was to drive up to Fort St. John, bring him back and keep him in a boarding kennel until I could move him to his temporary lodging. A day or so before I was about to head north, I received a call from the lady from the vet clinic who was looking after him while I was out of town. She offered to adopt him and I gave it a great deal of thought–about 2 seconds worth–before I agreed.

    The next day, I called the kennel and cancelled the reservation I’d made. The receptionist wasn’t in the least bit disappointed at the loss of revenue. My little guy was going to a good home and that was all that mattered.

    As for his new family, he’s very happy there. I couldn’t have asked for a better situation for him. He has lots of room to run around at his new place, he had some doggy friends to play with, and she’s still at the clinic, where he’s a celebrity.

    On top of that, he sometimes stays with me at my house and he’s overjoyed when she brings him over. He’s just as happy to go back home when she comes to collect him. At either place, he knows he’ll be loved and cared for.

        Russia has tried and failed to take any airstrip or cities. They might take one for a bit but then they’re pushed back. They have not established air superiority.

        They don’t have any established supply lines. Their troops are running out of food and fuel. Theyre begging locals for food and water who tell them to kindly go *$%& themselves. Entire armored formations are being abandoned and even Grad systems.

        Their plan was to take an airstrip then continually bring in supplies. They couldn’t do that with regular forces so in desperation they sent in paratroopers who were slaughtered. They’re sending in paratroopers randomly behind enemy lines with no support.

        They have no idea how to take and hold cities. They just move armor down streets in close formation without any helicopter support or support at all. Sitting ducks ready to be picked off.

        Another sign of how badly it’s going is Russians are stealing Ukranian uniforms and using that to attack Ukranians including civilians. That’s a war crime.

        They’re also abandoning their dead. Ukraine is littered with Russian bodies.

        Contrast that to a highly trained Ukranian forces. Guess who trained them? CANADA. Thank you Stephen Harper! OPERATION IMPACT. The Swedes have also trained them. They’ve been training for this exact scenario for years. They know Russian doctrine (which isn’t being followed BTW). They have demolition plans for every bridge in Ukraine. They even blown them up in a way that keeps the supports intact.

        Russia will have victories, but it’s only going to become more painful for them. The Ukranian secret weapon is USA Intel. They’ve been a step ahead of Putin at every turn. Go look American Air force flights. Those are the ones we know about.

        Now Ukraine is getting some serious equipment from Poland and others. I wouldn’t be surprised if non NATO countries are sending in troops. Maybe even FSA who hate the Russians. We also know there are NATO special forces in the country, but they may be back from the front lines or recently left.

          Neither is an indication of things going badly. Savages will savage. As they always do. Read up on their behavior during invasion of Georgia or during Chechen wars.

          And yes logistics has always been a huge problem for russia. You can go centuries back and see the same thing happening. You can see that during WWI and WWII and Afghanistan. They never learn in this respect. Just like they never have enough well trained regulars. Their elites are very well trained and equipped, the rest is rabble.

  8. I just finished watching the movie Killdozer. It wasn’t as trashy as I thought it might be. I actually expected something different but it turns out to be a lot like the classic SF movie The Thing from Another World.

    1. So I have a question for you. What is the title of an old SF film where an alien spaceship crashes into the ocean and divers from some underwater research station bring a pod from the spaceship and some kind of alien monster gets out of that pod and terrorizes the crew. I have seen it maybe 30 or 40 years ago. It could have been a black and white film (we only had a B&W TV then) and it was probably American.

      1. It sounds vaguely like Sphere (Dustin Hoffman, Sharon Stone, Samuel L. Jackson), but that was made just over 20 years ago and it might not be what you’re thinking of. The Abyss had a similar theme and that was made in the late 1980s.

        I’m pretty sure that there was an earlier movie with a similar theme, circa 1950s, but I can’t quite place it at the moment. A lot of these flicks tend to borrow from each other, so there’s not all that much originality.

        1. I vaguely remember an episode of the 1960s TV series Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea based on that theme. Similarly, I saw at least two Doctor Who stories using the Sea Devils, one during Jon Pertwee’s run and another with Peter Davison.

          Then there’s the Roger Corman movie Creature from the Haunted Sea, though the action takes place mostly on the surface. Then again, it was directed and produced by Corman, so I wouldn’t take it too seriously.

          See enough movies or TV shows like that, it becomes hard to tell them apart.

          1. The only older film I can think of right now is It! The Terror from Beyond Space, which was made in the late 1950s. An expedition to Mars picks up some alien, which, on the return trip, kills off the crew, leaving the commander (played by Marshall Thompson) as the sole survivor.
