January 11, 2022: Reader Tips

In one of his excellent Movie/TV tips yesterday, SDA regular B A Deplorable Rupertslander provided this link to the 1973 Police Story pilot, Slow Boy. This prompted a quick search to find this 1987 Police Story movie, The Freeway Killings.

Your most interesting tips of the past day would be surely appreciated!

  1. Poor dog, hope he shits in his owners’ shoes.

So many things are wrong here. Yes, the mask is obvious, ridiculous, pathetic and potentially dangerous. But look more carefully. The dog is a flattie (i.e. a flat coated retriever). A breed designed to jump into near freezing water, retrieve a duck and dry up back on the boat by soaking up every tiniest bit of sun rays. So the idiot owner puts boots over his webbed feet and makes him wear some kind of belt/vest contraption. Also, note the harness the dog is wearing and the Gentle Leader on his face, both devices a testimony that the owner has never bothered to teach the dog to walk on a loose leash (it is easy, all my flatties do it) and instead prefers the magnificent animal constrained like a draft horse. And it looks like the Gentle Leader is poorly fitted, too tight over the face thus putting pressure right under the poor dog’s eyes, that too is dangerous. Maybe it is not such a bad idea if liberals adopt dogs from Korean meat farms instead?

    1. One reason my parents’ dogs never liked going outside in winter was because their paws got cold, and, being dachshunds, so did their bellies if the snow as too deep for them.

I remember one Christmas, my parents and I walked over to the house of one of his colleagues. The dog at the time (a female long-haired dackel) came with us and she didn’t like the snow or the cold at all. Eventually, my father picked her up, opened his parka, and put her inside.

It was an amusing sight to see him walking along with a brown furry snout poking out from underneath his chin.

      1. Anything to make them happy. Once they look into your eyes they see your soul.

Long haired dachshund will probably be the dog I’ll own when long walks and exercise will become too much. Until then I’ll stick with retrievers. The ones we have now do not mind the cold or rain. It has to get below -15C for them to decide that short walk n’ dump is all they are interested in. It is summers that drain them. They need AC or water to soak their bellies in. They’re great swimmers too.

        1. One disadvantage of long-haired dachshunds is their coat. They need to be bathed more often and one finds their hairs all over the place as they shed. (Mind you, I’m still finding hairs from my canine step-brother–a short-haired dackel–in the cab of my truck. He often travelled with my father.)

          1. Dog hair? Oh noes, anything but that. LOL, I got retrievers, when I wake up I spit dog hair. Just learn to live with it. Hair ain’t fleas or ticks.

          2. I’ve had my truck for nearly 5 years now. Just when I thought I got rid of all of my canine step-brother’s sheddings, by hoovering the dickens out of everything, I still find his hairs. They are rather persistent.

      1. Interesting, I’ll have a look, thanks. Coincidently, have you seen a 90s film on similar topic titled Citizen X, excellent if very dark cinema with great performances by Donald Sunderland and especially by Max Von Sydow. The whole thing is on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_Agr2SOaM8 Again, it is very dark, also a great depiction of communist reality.

      2. I saw that movie “Child 44” too and what blew my mind about it was the way it depicted the insanity of living under the Russian Soviet communist regime.
I dont know how this film slipped past the gang of Hollywood whitewashers of Socialist evil.

        1. @Mr.Greg: And I can confirm it was exactly like that. I’ve ‘defected’ from E Europe, I lived my 1st 23 years under Communist rule and Yes, it was like that. I’ve always kept saying this to everyone here about all the little Communist/Socialist things creeping up in Canada. Pointing to office meetings, HR ‘inclusion’ emails, media propaganda/misinformation, Liberal and NDP crap etc. But to no avail. People either say ‘at least some socialism is good though’ or smile in disbelief or just shrug ‘oh what you can do?’. And they keep voting for Libranos and/or NDP.

          1. “I’ve always kept saying this to everyone here about all the little communist/Socialist things creeping up in Canada. ”

Welcome to the club, I grew up behind the Iron curtain too. Family would not get passports until it fell. There is a reason every second Rebel video covering the anti Wuhan Flu demonstrations has people with Eastern European accents giving interviews and warning people about what is coming. Idiots in the West can’t get it through their heads that our warnings are meant to be interpreted literarily, they are not hyperbole. Pity this time there will be no West to run to.

          2. I have no love for the commies, either. I was born in Berlin in the shadow of the Red Army, though we were in the British Sector. My mother told me a few stories about the Soviets after they came to the city, some of whom occupied her family’s house.

          3. My ancestors lived mostly in Eastern Poland (today’s Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania) when the Siberian horde invaded in 39 they run west to German occupied parts of the country. They hated Germans but the level of casual, bestial, subhuman cruelty they experienced from russians in 1920 made them seek refuge in Nazi occupied lands… Tells you everything doesn’t it?

    1. The failed lawyers in the Supreme Court claimed innocent until proven guilty only applied to criminal matters. Alberta bureaucrats made impaired driving a non- criminal offence. Thus, the end run of our rights was completed. Now except for very serious offences, all infractions will be deemed administrative penalties.
McLachlan needs to be swinging from a tree over this.

      1. “Now except for very serious offences, all infractions will be deemed administrative penalties.”

And JBTs will gain a further degree of immunity and further opportunity to torment people.

    1. Thx for the link.

Notice that nearly every option was spend, spend, spend? It appeared to be more an EnDeePee survey than a conservative one. “Either way, we’re gonna spend a kajillion $$$. How would you like it apportioned?”

      Bastards.

    2. I made my comments that independence would be the best option for Alberta. I’m sure they’ll be ignored.

    1. I wonder how so many of us knew that from the very start? It couldn’t be possible that there was actually science and medical information out there that anyone could find and read. Useless people are now the majority, it is not difficult to see why the elite want to reduce the numbers. Quick, line up for the shot dejour.
We have become a pathetic society ivbinconned.

  2. Further to my comments yesterday about the TV series Police Story, I mentioned that the weekly episodes ran for 4 seasons. After that, the series went for 2 more, consisting of a number of longer movies (2 hours, as I recall), which were shown semi-regularly every few weeks.

The last official episode was shown in 1980 and it was announced as such. But during the next few years, there were a number of Police Story movies (about half a dozen, I recall), such as the aforementioned The Freeway Killings, that were broadcast.

Thanks for the tip, Robert. I’ll add that to my round tuit list as I watched it when it was broadcast more than 30 years ago.

    1. You’re welcome.

A number of the weekly Police Story episodes can be found on YouTube. I spent much of last night watching a few, using the titles listed on the PS IMDB page to find them. (I’d forgotten how good the show was.)

There were a few that I don’t recall seeing before. When they were originally shown on CBC, I was an undergrad and I didn’t have much time to watch TV, not to mention that, being in residence, I didn’t have ready access to a set.

I spent a lot of my time during the holidays and summer breaks trying to catch up on some of my favourite shows.

      1. By the way, if you do look for any Police Story episodes on YouTube, your search might turn up links to some Jackie Chan movies with the same title.

      2. I really enjoy police stories! The Mysteries are all wrapped in a short hour or two. Likely missed most of these so now I’ll really appreciate them as they’re old and, for me, fashion is an added feature as well as cityscapes and old technology, such as telephones, as only an old Ma Bell chick –could admire and greatly appreciate.

P.S. it finally warmed up in Calgary. Saw a beautiful Chinook arch in the sky today!

Post Script #2: Not a huge Jackie Chan fan, should I be?

        1. Jackie Chan is one of those movie stars I could take or leave. I saw some of his movies he made before Rush Hour and I shrugged as I wasn’t overly impressed.

I liked Police Story for a number of reasons. The scripts were well-written, hardly surprising as Joseph Wambaugh, a retired LAPD officer, created the series. Once in a while, there were some exciting action-filled scenes.

The series, being an anthology, had a variety of actors in it. There were episodes that featured some whose careers were drawing to a close (last night, I watched Chain of Command with Stuart Whitman, Edmond O’Brien, and Charles McGraw) as well as some up-and-comers (one episode starred Kurt Russell and another featured Jan-Michael Vincent). Even a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone made an appearance.

          1. During our bout of enforced socialism (now entering its third year) I’ve been reading a ton of books, usually from used book and thrift shops (up yours, Heather Reisman!). I’ve discovered new-to-me authors like Dan Simmons, finally-got-around-to-writers like John LeCarre and dived back into previously read works by the likes of George Macdonald Fraser, David McCullough and Len Deighton. One of those authors I’ve been re-reading has been Joseph Wambaugh who I had read through the 70’s and 80’s. I’ve gone back and read his fiction and nonfiction and am currently reading his most recent Hollywood Station series. Very funny stuff and not at all “politically correct”.
Weird thing is, back thirty years or so you couldn’t swing a dead cat in a used book store without tons of books by the likes of Wambaugh…now, it’s pretty slim pickings. I’ve been looking to get into James Ellroy but his stuff is hard to come by in the used books and thrift stores, to the point I’ve started buying used books online, leaving me to the whim of the USPS and Canada Post. Gawd help you if the tracking notification says your order is stuck in Burnaby, BC!

        2. old technology, such as telephones, as only an old Ma Bell chick –could admire and greatly appreciate

Actually, there are lots of people interested in it. Take a look on eBay to see what’s for sale and the associated prices. The original “brick” cellphones are collector’s items and can cost a small fortune.

I bought a pair of Motorola bag phones last year and I’ve been wondering if there was a way I could convert them for amateur radio use. They were introduced in the late 1980s and, about 2 decades ago, they became obsolete as phone networks switched over to digital service.

          P. S., it’s -3 here in Edmonton right now. That’s quite a change from the -30 or lower that I dealt with at my house in B. C. a week ago.

          1. I watched the new Sopranos movie a couple of nights ago. It features James Gandolfini’s son playing a young Tony. It’s called, “The Many Saints of Newark.”

The story picks up and runs with the storyline of Christopher’s father, Dickie Moltisanti. Remember in the Sopranos series Christopher killed the cop who Tony said killed his father? This movie delves right into that storyline and without giving all away, this movie clears up a lot about that.

The rest was good but there was less about Italians. And Tony’s role was small.

Actor, Ray Liotta was in it and played 2 roles. Music was good– of the era. There were lots of murders and the Newark riots were featured, so lots of blood and gore. Sex — of course, and exposure to nakedness but only boobs. Overall I enjoyed the flick. It wouldn’t surprise me if a new show would come out of it.

It’s now playing on Crave so you don’t have to buy it.

          2. Repurposing phones, good stuff. Did it work?
Tinkering for me is changing the batteries in something. I usually say, there, “I fixed it!”

            Creative huh?

It’s a balmy 0 in Cowtown right now.

          3. I’ve only looked at hacking the bag phones. I spent much of the past year getting my father’s old radio control transmitter going again, as best I could. It works, but I’m not so sure about the condition of the other associated hardware. At least I got a signal out of it.

          4. Climate change, eh?
We are at -30 for the second day, Northern Ontario.
Being in our 70’s we have determined to “not let the old man in” so hubby ventures out daily to feed the wood furnace, and we manage to find a few outdoor activities to carry on no matter what the temperature.
Not jabbed so the fresh air is part of our self determined health regime.

        3. I’ll really appreciate them as they’re old and, for me, fashion is an added feature as well as cityscapes and old technology,

If you can tolerate the cheese, Knight Rider is an interesting window into the past. There’s a first season episode where KITT and his pet driver are sent to investigate a real estate fraud scheme involving desert land being bought up for chip factories in what pundits are starting to call “Silicon Valley”. Since the show was intended for general audiences, the writers tried to be topical.

Dukes of Hazzard has some similar episodes; there’s a first season episode where Daisy gets caught up in a fairly complex music piracy scam.

          1. I’m one of the few people who never watched DOH. From what I understand, the plot wasn’t the main reason that some people did, if you know what I mean (wink-wink! nudge-nudge!).

          2. I may have seen Knight Rider once or twice but Dukes didn’t interest me much. I didn’t like the writing as much as, Law and Order, for example. The latter was a favorite, I liked… the bit where New York features in and the background music too –always the same, it was quite captivating. As for the stories they were based on reality.

          3. B. A.
We watched it for the car chases and the dynamite, nacherally.

I mean, Catherine Bach was nice, but at the age I was then, that wasn’t the biggest priority. It was a family show, so they didn’t hyper-sexualise it.

    1. Awwwwww, Geraldo Rivera (he’s still around?) and Donkey Chompers caught the bug…..

That screeching you hear in the background is the world’s smallest violin playing My Nose Runs for You.

    2. I heard from my sister who is down South.
“They” took Moderna jab # 1 last April, jab #2 in July or August, the regular flu shot in late October and a covid booster last week. Tested negative for covid.

Her friend could hardly walk nor sit on the throne, had to lift his own legs to get into their wheels. She gave him a painkiller pill. He went to a gym on Monday alone. So, who knows how he really is. She claims to be better.

      Think they’re obsessive compulsive?

When I’m off line and the TV is off, there’s no such thing as covid! Life is too good, why be O.C. man?
Aw My Nose Runs Too, I Use A Tissue is a good song as well!

    1. Great letter. He thinks like a detective and sets out his reasons very well. I read that a few days ago, and wondered whether his pension was recinded, I think the rcmp earn it after 20 years service. I sort of doubt it though. He put in the time in the force.

    2. DanBC / Nancy Ross

Letter From A Banished RCMP Officer

I read that a few days ago at The Burning Platform
Here’s what astonished me the most.

      End 2018
Pop: 7,631,091,040. Deaths: 57,625,149. Overall death rate: 0.76%

      End 2019
Pop: 7,713,468,100. Deaths: 58,394,378. Overall death rate: 0.76%.

      End 2020
Pop: 7,713,468,100. Deaths: 58,394,378: Overall death rate: 0.76%.

      1. Isn’t that amazing, no increase with the “deadly” whu who flu. I wonder what the overall increase will be after a full year of gene therapy shots. A big insurance company in the US is recording a 40% increase in deaths from all causes in people 18 to 64 years of age since the vax was pushed on people. That should scare the living shit out of vax takers.

    3. Awesome letter by this RCMP officer (I’ve already sent it to my circle of thinking friends/relatives).
BUT unfortunately I think they will not win their legal battle or the win will take forever and they will be all drained of time and resources. 2 reasons:

      1. Let’s remember how RCMP commissioner caved in to “systemic racism”

      https://globalnews.ca/news/7060822/rcmp-commissioner-systemic-racism/

      2. Supreme Court of Canada ruled that “global climate change is real. It’s caused by greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activities and it poses a grave threat to the future of humanity. ”

      https://www.scc-csc.ca/case-dossier/cb/2021/38663-38781-39116-eng.aspx

So both RCMP leadership and Supreme Court are carrying water for Prime Moron and Liberals. Corporal Richard Mehner is 100% right but Canada is not a rule of law country any more.

  3. The utopian future of our Canadian trucking industry.
This is another good example of our governments wanting your mathematics skills of a toothpick when you delve into the practicality and even being a feasible option.

    https://www.howestreet.com/2022/01/burning-less-to-power-more/

The author fails to understand that you must add times two or this poor transport truck must loop back to be charged.
Never mind if it breaks down, how ya gonna get it back for repair?
At night, none of those batteries are charging and just discharging if your trying to recharge the transport trucks massive batteries. Add another element in carrying weight.
Sound beautiful in concept but reality is quite a different story.
That not even covering the huge temperature fluctuations we have…

  4. Project Veritas dropped a bombshell – hopefully its true.
#ExposeFauci is now the #2 trend in the USA.

  5. Blacklock has the story on how Justin’s Mounties want Canadians to report any anti-government and anti-police messages on the internet.

    1. Aw. Isn’t that cute. The Queen’s Cowboys think they’re competent enough to be the Canadian Stasi. Bumbling fools.

      1. I never used to have much of an issue with them. They were mostly background noise, some decent & with the occasional asshole rearing his head. About 6 years ago I was involved in an event wherein this cocky little Kaybecker with short man’s complex looked me in the eye and outright lied to my face. Since then, piss on ’em.

    1. Old news.

He got away with what he did, though, of course, there was a “settlement” to keep things hushed up. It makes one wonder if that didn’t give him the idea that he could do whatever he liked and not be subject to any real consequences.

    1. Not surprising. The CEO is one of TurdHole’s idiots. She checked the right boxes, none of which were intelligence or skill.

    1. That’d be a fun ride on the Hawg. Sans the gravel patch & at a somewhat more sedate pace, of course.

      1. Ha, not a rider myself, I prefer to keep four wheels under my stupid ass, but have known bikers my whole life and appreciate the hardware. What do you ride?

BTW, funny you mention the gravel stretch, I found it fiendish to design that into such an already nasty track, so that you are forced to compromise on your chassis setup and tire choices for the pavement. Nasty bastards.

  6. One last kick at Novak Jokevic.

I could care less whether he’s vaccinated. In life he’s a total asshole. There, got that off my chest.

    1. I wouldn’t need much incentive to cuddle my canine step-brother or vice-versa.
