Making Babies

Armstrong Economics- How Hungary Is Combating Population Decline

Birth rates across developed nations are rapidly declining. One country is combating this problem by making it easier for young couples to start families. Since 2010, the Hungarian government has been offering a paid incentive to improve the declining birth rate.

  1. There was an economist who once stated that as people became more prosperous they would have less children. Look it up.

    1. Perhaps. However, I doubt there was an economist who predicted we’d stop having babies altogether and commit cultural suicide

    2. If you follow what our politicians do and impose and NOT what they say…
Our current society is decimating families for individualism which is a lonely existence of self destruction.
As miserable people push their own unhappiness into government policies.
Look at Canada’s current destruction of Christianity and Churches as our politicians encourage this behavior.

“The state has gradually annexed all the responsibilities of adulthood
health care, child care, care of the elderly – to the point where it’s
effectively severed its citizens from humanity’s primal instincts,
not the least the survival instinct…They corrode the citizen’s sense
of self-reliance to a potentially fatal degree.”

    1. Sad to say it, but those Americans who believe in self-reliance and Independence from the government are called … suckers. Too dumb to get them some.

First. Our culture died. The Nation dies next.

  3. Yeah … just wait until the enrichers hear about that.
There will be nothing but babies and babies and babies.

  4. Government penalizes child birth and families who chose to raise children.
    Taxed out of existence..
    As Ronald Regan stated.
Government regulates and taxes productive behaviour out of existence, they subsidize a copy of the original motions…
Young people who chose to have children, take a vow of poverty for 20 years..
    Government solution?
    Import more ignorant children..
Until we recognize the problem, there will be so solution.

    “Co-Parenting indeed”.
That new Country is a necessity, because a break without vengeance will not be sufficient.
Sending our tormenters screaming across no mans land will befit their malice and arrogance..

  5. So Hungary has started implementing these policies in 2010. We are not told whether there is any growth in the number of births in Hungary. That’s poor journalism.

Funny thing, the fertility rate in Hungary grew from 2011 to 2019, from 1.23 to 1.49, still being way below the replacement rate.

    Canada’s fertility rate in 2019 was 1.47.

  6. Quebec has been paying women to have more children for over 30 years. From a 1990 article:

“With one of the lowest birth rates in the Western world, the provincial government of Quebec is taking action to bolster its dwindling numbers: It is paying residents to reproduce.

Since May of 1988, Quebec has been offering parents a bonus for each baby they bring into the world. Last month, the government raised the stakes in its race for bigger families, increasing the cash bonus that goes to parents of a third child from $4,500 to $6,000.”

  7. The conservatives once floated the idea of income splitting for families. It was pretty simple, the total income for the family was divided by the number of adults that income was supporting. Plus for every two children you had the income could be split an additional way. So if you and your spouse had four children and your combined income was 100k, the income would be split four ways and taxed at 25K for each split instead of at a higher rate. While not a payout like Hungary I know a number of families that would have benefited keep a little more of their income.
