Four calls. That’s what led to an avalanche of hyped-up media reports on ivermectin.

The story behind the tweet that went ’round the world shows how a myth was born about a safe, if now controversial, human drug that was FDA-approved for parasitic disease in 1996 and bestowed the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 2015. It is a story in which the barest grain of truth morphed into an anything-goes media firestorm.

It began with one sentence in a Mississippi health alert on reports to the state’s poison control center: “At least 70% of the recent calls have been related to ingestion of livestock or animal formulations of ivermectin purchased at livestock supply centers.” In the thick of a fierce covid wave in the American South, no official at the FDA, or reporter for that matter, seemed to ask: 70 percent of what? Instead, government and media joined forces against a public health threat that, in retrospect, was vastly exaggerated.

Amid dozens of articles that ensued, Rolling Stone told of Oklahoma hospitals so jammed with ivermectin overdoses that gunshot victims had to wait for care — except it wasn’t true. Twice, The New York Times printed corrections of the same false information from Mississippi, which it described in one article and later removed, as “a staggering number of calls.” The Associated Press, Washington Post and, twice, the The Guardian in London also corrected its reporting on the alert.

The Times’ correction summed it up: “This article misstated the percentage of recent calls to the Mississippi poison control center related to ivermectin. It was 2 percent, not 70 percent.” (The Times and Post both made corrections in direct response to our reporting for this article.)

In real numbers, six calls were received for ingestion of ivermectin. Four were for the antiparasitic drug given to livestock.

  1. The left (particularly the media) will fabricate, ignore, censor, malign, or otherwise impugn anything that appears to be of interest or in anyway advocated by the the so-called “right”. To them, only they can evaluate and determine the good, the bad, the beneficial, what’s allowed, what’s banned and what is mandatory including what can be stated and thought. They are, by definition, at best, happy-faced fascists and at worst, mass murderers and totalitarian thugs.

    Any therapeutic that reduces hospitalizations and deaths will be black listed.

  4. Mary Beth Pfeiffer is wrong. The FDA didn’t “fail to allow a safe drug…”, it deliberately suppressed a treatment, as did the medical establishment across the world. Some people have blood on their hands.

    Also, the Guardian is in Manchester, but that’s a quibble; she has dug up the trail of a deliberate lie.

    I wonder, in Alberta and Saskatchewan, how many actually phoned poison control or visited er?

  7. There’s also a WHO-sponsored rebuttal of the widely rumored success of ivermectin in parts of India, notably Uttar Pradesh state.
    The report basically says okay they used ivermectin and rates went down but it’s probably just a big old coincidence, they also had other measures in place, and maybe they just got lucky.
    Or maybe we just got unlucky when Bill Gates passed on buying shares of ivermectin.
    The report is so clumsy, it makes North Korean propaganda sound like highly reasoned analysis.

  8. Ivermectin is a generic prescription* medication. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it.

    There is not any profit in Ivermectin. Same with Generic Hydroxy Chloriquine. Monoclonal Antibodies? There is lots of money in brand new patented Monoclonal Antibodies. Not as much money as they will make from vaccines, vaccine boosters, and new vaccines.

    I don’t know for sure, but someone said that the US FDA cannot issue an Emergency Use License for any vaccine if the disease has an effective treatment plan and drug treatments? Is that true?

      Under section 564 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act), when the Secretary of HHS declares that an emergency use authorization is appropriate, FDA may authorize unapproved medical products or unapproved uses of approved medical products to be used in an emergency to diagnose, treat, or prevent serious or life-threatening diseases or conditions caused by CBRN threat agents when certain criteria are met, including there are no adequate, approved, and available alternatives.

      Lots of money can be made if there are no approved treatments for COVID19. Treatments using Ivermectin (or HCQ)?

  9. In my province doctors are not allowed to prescribe ivermectin. So i, like many other people, have been using ivermectin labeled for livestock (“veterinarian use only”). The injectable formulation can be taken orally, but I prefer topical application of the pour-on formulation – it’s alcohol based just like hand sanitizer.

    It is possible to get covid even with prophylactic use of ivermectin, but it ends up being much less severe and shorter duration. I am not aware of anyone who took ivermectin as treatment for covid who ended up being hospitalized or dying.

  16. They use trickery as well – I’ve commented on this before. A sleight of hand commonly employed is what Brian Stelter did last night when he had Bari Weiss on his show. It’s subtle but if you listen carefully, it’s there.
    Weiss was bemoaning the fact how the world has gone mad with respect to how our speech is governed with things like gender appropriation, Ivermectin, etc. etc.
    Stelter’s response was: “You keep saying we aren’t allowed to talk about those things Bari but who exactly is forbidding you to say those things?”. Such Bullshit. Stelter knows damn well what Weiss is talking about but he gaslights his viewers by implying there’s someone or something in the world that will shut down any voice that dares to broach these topics. Stelter tries to makes Weiss look like she’s off her rocker and admittedly he caught her off guard. For once I’d like someone to reply with: “Stop acting like you don’t know what I’m talking about because you do and if you don’t, you’re incredibly stupid.”

  18. Ivermectin’s great if you have roundworms. Tylenol often relieves headaches. Neither of them are effective anti-virals.

    1. Ivermectin is an inhibitor of the Wuhan virus. It has been used against other viruses such as Zika and Dengue. Not only that, but ivermectin is far safer than Tylenol. You are clueless and simply a liar.
