Spartacus was the second Kirk Douglas movie that Stanley Kubrick directed. (The other one was Paths of Glory.) From what I heard, the two of them fell out over how to make the movie and that prompted Kubrick to move permanently to England.
BAD – Kubrick had a fairly large vision and ego it would seem. Some of the latter was justified.
Kubrick was well-known for being a stickler for details but he got good results. But, yes, he butted heads with his production staff when things didn’t go the way he thought they should.

It’s in 3 seasons and the producer’s tried to be as authentic to the period where a slave was classed no more than a piece of furniture and everyone was pretty much naked. The masters of the house were quite vicious and took care of their needs anytime they felt horny.
The original Spartacus was controversial as Dalton Trumbo was the writer and, if I remember correctly, he was blacklisted at the time.
Then there were the sexual references. I think the original theatrical release had those deleted or toned down, though they were eventually restored.
If you like lots and I mean lots of blood and guts, this has tons with a really good story line with lots of plots and backstabbing. Surprisingly, the nudity really does fit this series.
The main character gladiator was extremely good. He had cancer and died and they used another actor that wasn’t so good.
