  3. So… How about Canada take its cue from Sweden, Denmark and now (astonishingly) the UK instead of the Demented States of America or the largest open air prisons in the antipodes? Oh, right.       The only vote splitting going on is the LPC and the CPC splitting the liberal vote.

      Also, it isn’t ALL Australia. Our problem is that when the states agreed to Federation they insisted in maintaining a lot of their ‘state rights’.

      Health, without trawling through the fine print of our constitution, is a State Issue, not a Federal one.

      So we have a situation where Scott Fence Sitter Morrison, our PM, chairs his little National Cabinet meetings and tries to be everyone’s friend instead of smacking a few heads together and telling the premiers of the big eastern states to stop comparing dick sizes and allow the NATIONAL economy a chance to recover. Instead we have Mother-in-Law Gladys from NSW, Stairman Dan (open Belt and Road supporter btw) from Victoria and to a lesser extent the Chook Woman from Qlds jumping around trying to upstage each other about how many protestors they can violently beat each weekend in the name of stopping sniffles.

      Where I live (SA) we have a largely spineless leader and a Health Expert who openly told the entire state that catching a football accidentally kicked into a crowd at an AFL event was a serious virus risk and spectators should do everything in their power to avoid touching one. She later attempted to claim she was telling a joke, which when you are MEANT to be an adult giving expert health advice only makes it worse. If you want to tell jokes, get an open mic night.

      Here in SA very few people seem to be beaten. Occasionally the Leaders panic and have snap lockdowns, which turn out to be farces due to all the exceptions. Nearly all supermarkets, booze shops and restaurants were open. You had to get take away but you were allowed to sit down on the tables outside to eat. I spent every day of the last lockdown going for regular walks (maskless) and buying take away (maskless) from one of my local fish and chip/burger bars and chatting to the (maskless) staff.

      Since then there are mask regulations… I think… Maybe encouragements is a better word. I don’t even own a mask and no one has refused me service in the weeks since the July lockdown. To be honest I feel a lot of people wear masks outdoors simply because we are coming out of our winter and the mask helps keep the face warm.

      So that is my state. WA is so far from anywhere if it wasn’t for the Perth Test once a year we might forget about them. Tasmania is the little island south of Victoria. Tasmanians are traditionally so isolated from the rest of Australia that we openly accuse them of having two heads because of all the inbreeding. I believe they are fine. Or maybe in the middle of a cannibal apocalypse. Either/Or

      So, not all Australians live in fear of the Covid police turning up on their doorstep at 3am to check only authorised people are within the house, just all those in our three biggest states by population and largely because our Prime Minister lacks the balls to challenge the State leaders.

      New Zealand on the other hand? Been openly a proud Socialist Dictatorship for years. Don’t let the nice movie landscapes fool you, that place is basically North Korea with the words ‘sheep’ and ‘nukes’ reversed.

      He is not the same as Trudeau, running on a right wing ticket will get you exactly the number of seats PPC has now. O’Toole is far from perfect, disappointed in him, but still, Trudeau is magnitudes far worse for Canada than O’Toole.

    1. I would like to think that politicians actually listen to public opinion, but they haven’t done for some time. They push an opinion and their echo chamber replays it often enough that they believe it to be true. Then they stuff ballot boxes to ensure it is true.

      Rest assured, the left is not backing down on covi-pass, green pass, whatever they call it. There has been too much exposure, too much momentum building against them to stop now – lest they never be able to start up again. No, they are going to push and push and push.

        True. But then again, there is no public opinion … or certainly not one that is voiced.

        Canadians with opinions just lie down and shiver in the long grass hoping that the claws and teeth get someone else first.

        1. If you were a politician, how would you gauge public opinion? You might have your aides summarize the newspapers. That’s not public opinion, that’s what the G&M and Torstar editorial boards think. Or you might consult a pollster. That’s not public opinion, that’s what some hand-picked – i.e., politically torqued – focus group thinks, or what some egregiously non-random sample thinks. Or maybe you’d check the letters your constituents send you, or twitter, or blogs, but everyone knows those are just the kooks, right? Unless you made an effort to go out and randomly meet people, how would you even know what they are thinking? And that would be a fate worse than death. As far as I can tell, most politicians find the public distasteful, even frightening.

          The flip side is most Canadians will form their own opinions from those very same sources. So in some sense the politician is seeing where opinion is being driven.

          99% of politics happens in a bubble well insulated from the 95%+ of Canadians who are not themselves politicians, backroom boys, media types, celebrities or “useful idiot” academics. Some Canadians feel they’re participants because they read the same articles in The Atlantic that the PM does and then discuss them with their friends. Whereas other Canadians realize they are not.

          One of the few times I can recall the political bubble being pierced was when Morneau and Trudeau wanted to change the taxation of small business. And I’m not sure that pushback would work again today.

  6. It’s possible they have done a compete 180 degrees and now see how wrong and damaging domestic passports are for society but control freaks don’t often have this kind if epiphany. Other reasons:

    -they saw the protests in France and other places in Europe and got frightened

    – they realized they were going to lose in court and once legal precedence is set, they will lose domestic passports as an option to introduce at a later date.

    – domestic passports were a threat to increases vaccine uptake

    – they had someone explain the science that these vaccines wers going to be useless against newer variants, like Delta and Mu. If the vaccines no longer prevent infection, transmission, illness, hospitalization or death then vaccine passports cannot be justified (see 2nd point about court).

    – they could no longer hide the data on the poor safety profile and short duration of protection of the current vaccines. Has someone threatened to leak data or write a damning expose?

    – they’ve squeezed every last stock gain from current vaccines and have moved their investments to testing and treatments. Didn’t Soros and Gates recently buy a UK testing company?

  10. Science is confirming that vaxed and unvaxed can both transmit. So the passports are not really protecting anyone. So maybe the concern is that if they isolate the unvaxed, people will realize that the vaxed are transmitting. As it stands, they can still blame unvaxed for perpetuating the pandemic and the uninformed public will believe them.

      It’s amazing in the press reporters and pundits completely ignore the fact that fully vaxxed can get and transmit the Rona.
      They continually say, get vaccinated, be safe.
      You are no safer from COVID for being vaxxed than unvaxxed.
      It appears less severe symptoms for the vaxxed.
      In the UK there ages 40 to 60 there are more vaxxed in the hospital than unvaxxed.
