Of Course They Are

Chinese state-owned shipbuilder tapped to supply ferry for Crown corporation

A huge state-owned shipyard in China is building a 1,000-passenger ferry for use by a federal Crown corporation over the objections of Canada’s shipbuilding industry and at a time when two Canadians have spent 989 days in Chinese prisons as victims of what Ottawa has called “hostage diplomacy.”

Marine Atlantic Inc. awarded a $100-million, five-year ferry charter contract in late July to Sweden’s Stena North Sea Ltd., which subcontracted construction of the 200-metre vessel to China Merchants Industry’s Jingling shipyard for delivery in 2024.

  1. Hey, the maritimes compulsively votes Liberal, and they will not stop.

They deserve this. They deserve to be thrown under the bus, by the people they refuse to stop voting for.

    1. In other news Brian Mulroney was seen picking up the manilla envelope from the chinese embassy and delivering it to Justin.

ha ha …. I read down the comments and see Stan beat me to it!!

    2. They are easy to fool and can be bought off with a bit of election candy.

Nobody ever said it took a lot of brains to keep voting for the political party that destroyed their economies.

    3. In my “maritime district” the cons parachuted an outsider in from another province. Nice enough person but absolutely no name recognition, not even a decent door knocking campaign. People would ask at the polling station who the conservative candidate was. They didn’t know, yet the candidate recieved almost thirty percent of the vote. Imagine if the cons had a real leader and had a real campaign.

  2. Why does Marine Atlantic exist and why doesn’t Newfieland run their own effing ferries? Are Atlantic Canadians our special retards that need our charity? Do they realize they are getting a Chinese ship that will likely fall to pieces in a couple years, if not much earlier. I’m betting it doesn’t work from day one.

    1. Newfoundland and New Brunswick are very bankrupt. But Atlantic Canada has lots and lots of MP’s and Senators so they’re kept afloat by the Federal Government, regardless of Party.

    2. I seem to recall the previous BC NDP having fast ferries built for the Tsawwassen – Victoria run; thing is the ferries had to slow down to go through Active Pass, (due to wake/shoreline erosion concerns), so the ‘fast’ was an unnecessary expense…….“plus ça change…etc, etc”.

      1. As a Newfoundland resident, never having voted liberal, having worked all my life in private industry and paid the maximum in taxes every year, plus GST (which that piece of conservative excrement, Brian Mulroney, foisted upon us and as an aside and I already know the answer, did anyone in Canada other than the manufacturers, benefit from the elimination of the manufacturers sales tax? And where did all those manufacturing jobs go? You all know the answer. ) I never got a say in boat buying, dam building, or any of the other shite you lot are pissed about so f off with the welfare comments.
Christ in a sidecar, for a country that regulates everything to the point of death and then subsidizes what remains, posters seem to resent mostly the province of Newfoundland. Subsidies for farmers, the auto industry, the railways, Air Canada, Bombardier, yet here you are fixated on a ferry for an island province that Canada bought, stole would be a more accurate term.
You don’t want to buy a ferry build a fn road. You brought it, you broke it, now stfu.
Newfoundland before joining your loser country had 2% unemployment. That’s all sources. Two percent. Let that sink in.

        1. Greg as one who’s family background is from NFLD and Cape Breton. My wife is a Newf. The folks on the rock bought into the freaking socialist program and kept voting liberal and taking from the government purse until they were screwed. They still think that is the way to go. You being an exception, have to stop defending their stupidity. I could write a thousand pages on the reckless attitude of most people in the Maritimes and NFLD. But hey most people wouldn’t give a shit if I was right or wrong. I have family from Springdale to Lewis Port. They have been self sufficient all their lives with a couple of exceptions but they still vote for their own destruction. How about you? That 2% unemployment needs to be looked at very seriously as I know what the “employment” was.

          1. And how about Stephen Harper fighting tooth and nail to award Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax the largest military procurement contract in Canadian history only to have Nova Scotia go totally liberal in the next election. They don’t want employment, they want handouts. Sadly, some are forced to find jobs because they can’t get on the dole and those ones never tire of reminding us they have to work.

  3. Well, he does love their basic dictatorship. Funny how there is no outrage in the bought and paid for media.

  4. Our governments policies over the decades has crashed our system where we don’t produce anything of value anymore.
Sure makes for alot more jobs in the bullshit sector of adding no value to our economy at all.
Bankers, consultants, housing speculators and massively over restricted and indebted businesses are failing with this massive debt loads on everyone…
But the good news, our politicians in the cities can build even more infrastructure as they raise your taxes even more.
Ops, must be electric and costly. Some busses failed due to extra weight load not accounted for with batteries while others burned up by failing charging systems.

    Welcome to our future…

    1. Critical thinking simply doesn’t occur in the electorate or we wouldn’t be wondering why provinces would rather live off of one than develop their own resources.

    2. Yes but Canada is a world leader in discovering new genders, ahead of even China. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    1. For some reason, our politicians believe we have endless wealth and what they don’t see, we must be hiding.

  5. You know. They know you know. They don’t care that you know they know you know. Because stifle yourself peon. There’s nothing you can do about it.

  6. That’s $100Million for a five year lease – does not buy the ship. What is the plan after the five years? In a similar vein, under big bad PM Harper Halifax Shipyards won the contract to build the new navy ships, work that under Trudeau will be shared with Davie in Montreal, moving Maritime jobs to Quebec.
I despair of my fellow Maritimers.

    1. Don’t be surprised with the Native Community of government wealth transfers that they create their own Maritime Ship Building business.

  7. I wonder if the Chinese engineers will be of the same quality as the Nipegon bridge bridge designer. One cold snap and it snapped.

  8. But ferries contribute to global warming, disturb marine life and negatively impact fragile ecosystems. They should be banned. If you want to get to Vancouver island take a kayak.

    1. That’s not going to work either, unless you’re indigenous paddling a kayak is a brutal form of cultural appropriation. Water wings and a Speedo is the way to go.

      1. Water wings and a Speedo is the way to go.

That explains Canada’s answer to Esther Williams: Chrystia What’s-her-name.

  9. Marine Atl. Inc. ——> Stena North Sea Ltd. ———> China Merchants Jinling Shipyard(Weihai) Co

I guess money isn’t the only thing you can launder.

  10. Would that be similar to the Chinese designed roll-on, roll-off, ocean-going, vehicular ferry that has the extra-long vehicle ramps which can be lowered well past level? The ferries with extreme shallow water and serious un-beaching capabilities?

    Those Chinese ferries?
