Yeah, there were a lot of references to “diversity” and all that blather. I was a bit disappointed as I didn’t think that CU would have had to resort to that.
But, one needs to remember that AGMs are covered by business media. (I saw a few reporters at the meetings I attended when CU held them at the Macdonald Hotel in Edmonton.) Highlights of such gatherings are quickly published. Investment decisions are often made based on details such as earnings and dividends. But, as well, the reports can either enhance or tarnish a company’s public image.
One shareholder raised the issue of “wokeness” being introduced into the proceedings. I got the sense from the response that the executives didn’t particularly like having to do that but felt obligated for the sake of good publicity. It wouldn’t look good for a company to have a headline like “XYZ Raises Dividend, Ignores Issues of Diversity”.
