We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Cars

Zerohedge;

About 20% of all “planet saving EV owning visionaries” in California are defecting from their EVs back to gas-powered vehicles, according to a new report by Business Insider. The switch back to gas comes as a result of charging being a “hassle”, the report found.

The report cites a new study published in the journal Nature Energy by University of California Davis researchers Scott Hardman and Gil Tal. They surveyed people in California who purchased EVs between 2012 and 2018. […]

“If you don’t have a Level 2, it’s almost impossible,” said Bloomberg automotive analyst Kevin Tynan. It took him six hours to charge his Chevy Volt back to 300 miles of range using a Level 2 charger.

  1. They should be forced to abide by their initial decision and NEVER be able to own or drive a fossil fuel powered vehicle again….ever
They need to choke on a healthy platter of virtue signaling with a side of stupidity.

    1. Were they specific about the actual charging locations? Tesla owners are notoriously cheap, preferring their “free” fillup stations at designated Tesla parking lots, vs paying for their home station, and having to actually pay for their power usage

  2. That should be a chevy Bolt and not volt …. a volt was a hybrid and only had a tiny battery.

    1. We just need to find that Unicorn who specializes in the instant and free installation of those charging lanes… Until then….

  3. Good grief. Doesn’t anybody proofread these articles? Under the Math Is Hard banner, here is what they said:

“Level 2 charging at home, which can charge vehicles in about twice the time as a normal Level 1 plug.”

    but shouldn’t it be:

“Level 2 charging at home, which can charge vehicles in about half the time as a normal Level 1 plug. “

Good catch. When they say ‘Level 2’ they mean 240 volt as opposed to the ‘Level 1’ of a normal 120 volt@15 amps in your standard electrical receptacle. And yes, it provides exactly twice the power (measured in watts) for a given amperage and charges twice as fast. You could also, in theory, take the same 120 volts@15 amp circuit and double the available current to 30 amps, but that would be more expensive (heavier wire, different breaker and receptacle; with a switch to 240 volts, the wire can remain the same) and the chargers aren’t designed for it.

I like the concept of electric cars, but they aren’t suitable for certain distances/climates/terrains. Not yet.

  4. In my opinion EVs are a massive disinformation scam, it’s obviously an impossible vision, the objective is to eventually do away with our carbon-burning cars, only the wealthy and the ruling class will drive large expensive EVs. They will have servants to take care of the battery charging.

    1. yop, and you fail, there are no carbon burning cars, they burn gas or diesel, so don’t pander to those asshole4s by using their terms!

    2. I’ve been saying this for a while. Once they get fossil fuel reduced enough they will “suddenly” realize there isn’t enough material to make batteries, not enough material to make enough windmills and solar panels to supply the energy etc. The only people allowed to own a car will be the elites and special eco warriors. The rest of us will be on public transit or some form of ride sharing.

      1. Yes Greg, 100% accurate. I been saying this for a long time now but the stupid is so ingrained that it will not end until the stupid people end. There will be no public transit or ride sharing, none what so ever.

    3. Yop, “they will have servants” = Yeah, us peasants, if we survive the great cull!

  5. I assume that most people who buy EVs, have ICE vehicles as well. One for virtue signaling and one to go anywhere beyond city commuting. After the virtue signaling wears off and their owners grow weary of the hassles of charging and expenses, I’m surprised it’s only 20% that flog them.

  6. The Zerohedge article makes the mistake of conflating voltage with power. Sloppy usage. A 120 volt, 20 amp outlet can supply exactly 2400 watts of power, and no more, without tripping the breaker. There’s your “level 1”. A 240 volt, 50 amp outlet can supply exactly 12000 watts of power, and that is about all that most home electrical systems will support. There’s your “level 2”. It’s not just the voltage; the current capacity of the wiring and breakers is crucial, too.

It would not surprise me to learn that the 480 volt “superchargers” are three-phase power, which is more efficient for high-current users than single-phase, as delivered to most residences.

Nevertheless, it’s true that the inconvenience of slow recharging exists.

    1. “It would not surprise me to learn that the 480 volt “superchargers” are three-phase power, which is more efficient for high-current users than single-phase, as delivered to most residences.”

      (another electrician?..:)

Yes, watts are watts, regardless of voltage. 120 volts x 20 amps is indeed 2400 watts, as is 240 volts x 10 amps (or 480 volts x 4 amps).

Three-phase would certainly be preferable in terms of raw power (although out here in BC we use 600 volts rather than 480), but as you no doubt know the battery itself would still be the limiting factor. Develop a super-battery that will fully charge in 5 minutes and you’ll have a game-changer.

  7. Lobby for end to subsidies, don’t buy one, non-existent problem solved.

  8. An interesting tidbit in Car and Driver’s ongoing long-term review of a Tesla Model 3: they use Tesla’s Superchargers a lot, and the price per gallon-equivalent amount of electrical energy at the Superchargers works out to $9/gallon. The Model 3 is about 3x as efficient as a comparable car, but with an energy price 3x as much as gasoline, the net savings is … nothing.

At least you get to sit around and wait while it’s charging.

  9. I know saying “stupid idiots” is creating an oxymoron, but we’re already finding that the giant wind fans cost more in energy to produce, than they will put out in their service life, and kill lots of wildlife as well. Solar panels slowly degrade and lose their already poor efficiency, and they both need to be subsidized first wqith gobs of government money and then with regular power supplies as well. Then the real kicker is none of that crap can be recycled and it all becomes landfill. They are also finding that EV vehicle batteries slowly lose their efficiency, and their kicker is also that they can’t be recycled either, so more and more landfill. You would think that the Greenies would be aware of this glitch in the EV matrix, but mixing Greenies and awareness is also creating oxymorons.

They will only learn the truth when they too are forced on to public transport or must walk or cycle, and they too can weep as the elites swoosh by in their luxury cars, IC vehicles, or EV’s. They will be the only ones able to afford them, and of course the reality is that this, is the eventual plan anyway. I guess when you evaluate the outcome, it will be acceptable because of the very few elites that will use and discard them, as opposed to the masses using EV’s and discarding them. The Greenie revolution will be a success when they complete the reduction of the planetary population to one billion or less. Most of the Greenies won’t be around to witness it though, useless idiots are always the first to go.

  10. Some folks on this blog just can’t get over that lots of folks can afford them, are partial to clean air and any other benefits. The subsidies are the only legitimate argument against. My son in law bought a Tesla, did not care about the cost to run it was more interested in the technology. If I could afford one, I would buy one too. Oh the horror, independent thought. I repeat…just don’ buy one and if EV’s upset you call whine11 for a wambulance.

    1. MDK, that really was funny as your ambulance will be on charge and well, who cares, good bye.

      1. Exactly!
Anybody want their fire trucks or snow plows running on batteries? Not a fricking chance.
How about politicians who need armored cars because they need security because they’re hated like grim death. (Can’t think of anyone offhand.) Yeah no.
I’m not against battery cars, but the sun doesn’t shine out of their trunks.

        1. Your observation and concerns display your level ignorance…..common in your case.

      2. Hey VOWG, in 1978 I was potentially severely injured in a toboggan mishap. On the way to the hospital, the ambulance ran out of gas and they had to send another. Care to explain the difference?

        1. Stop being a fool. You will be more appreciated. Nothing electric can be produced without fossil fuels and that sir is a fact.

        2. “potentially severely injured”

WTF does that even mean? Potentially my ass. Howz about this, “The ambulance potentially ran out of gas.” LOL

    2. MDK, you missed the largest argument against them – the government, by favoring EV’s and attempting to eliminate conventional autos, is consciously trying to destroy the investment made by millions of people in the auto companies and the fossil fuel industry to give them income in their retirement. That is a textbook example of a government taking, and the government should be required to make payment to those investors equal to the value of the investment and the future stream of income that the owners of them will be forced to forgo.

  11. Until a nuke powered grid circles the world and can charge all those electric vehicles it will be an impossibility. Oh hell, I forgot, when the coal and oil runs out there will be no vehicles or wind turbines or solar panels. Holy shit back to the future, horse and buggy with everything made out of hand crafted wood with 200 year old iron/steel tools. Oh well, as many have said, reality bites.

    1. Astute observation VOWG. The anti nuke movement of the 70’s was not started as an environmental issue but a weapons issue. Morphed super quickly once the lefties got hold of it and blindly ran with it as they are oft to do. In the process we threw away the chance of 40 years of research as how to get rid of or reprocess the spent fuel. All of the problems they opine over would not exist but for their past ill considered actions. We all know lefties NEVER are made to pay for bad decisions and because of this they are damn hard to reverse. There is great hope in the new mini reactors which would make VOWG’s observation entirely doable. I suspect the green weenies will go absolutely bat shit crazy over this, may even cause the likes of Suzuki to stroke out (feature not a bug) and Butts et al will willfully and happily bend over and kill it.

  12. Have to agree. First heard of of this crap in 1972 in university after the Club of Rome released the study Limits to Growth. The prof at the time was concerned that the whole thing seemed to be very Malthusian and that the people of that ilk would make Hitler look like a swell guy. He felt going this direction was very dangerous to humanity. How prescient he was.I suspect there are not many profs like that out there anymore.

  13. The only thing that is grater than an eco commie going back to ICE is the same lefty getting zero value on the toaster they are trading in. FETE

  14. I believe the preeminent goal of the ev scam is to drive down the value of fossil fuels so that the billionaires can buy up the whole industry for pennies on the dollar, then re-sell them to China.

  15. I would guess the majority of Tesla Model 3s are bought for their acceleration 0-60 in 3.1 sec. The handling on the 3 is supposed to be outstanding, too. They are selling hot rods, not vehicles that will “ save the planet “.

  16. My wife and I have Teslas and we charge them just like my phone at night when I am having supper or when I am asleep. In the summer time we charge about every 3 days. My Model x has 550 KM range when fully charged. I only charge at home to 80% of that value as it extends your battery life. I only go to 100% when I have to, on long trips.

We used to have an Audi and a BMW and I kept track of my mileage and gas costs for 2 years. When we bought the Tesla’s I installed a watt meter just for the 240 plug in that I had installed in my garage, (The outlet is similar to your oven plug.)

At any rate for the past 2 years I have been keeping track of the electric costs and I take a power reading every month. The cost of the electricity is rounding out to about 30 % of the gasoline costs and that’s when gas costs about $1.00 / litre. I believe gas is in the $1.30 / litre range now so the savings are even more. Last year we saved about $167.00 per month on average and this year because gas costs have gone up so far we are saving about $269.00 per month.

I have taken the Tesla 2 times to Vancouver Island and we have driven 3 times to Phoenix using the super charger stations. When we purchased the Tesla’s we got 8 years of free super charging so those trips cost us nothing.

So far we have no issues and I am one of the 80%. I would buy another one. The only maintenance is that when you reach 100,000 KM is they want to check the brakes which I hardly ever use because when you take your foot off the accelerator the car slows down and the motor turns into a generator and sends electricity to the battery. The only other maintenance would be tires.

I am not a CO2 hater as I believe we need more for plant life, but what impresses me the most is the torque of the motors and when going 140 KM on Highway 15 in Montana, Utah, and Idaho if you come up behind a truck at 140 KM stepping on the accelerator it’s like a jackrabbit. No shifting down, hearing a bunch of noise from under the hood and waiting a couple of seconds before the car responds. The Electric motor are instantaneous.

    They are a good car.
