  1. May 5, 1961, Alan B. Shepard became the first American in space:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xd9kg-fJ9g

While Yuri Gagarin is given credit for being the first man in space, strictly speaking, he wasn’t because he ejected from his spacecraft shortly before landing. Shepard, on the other hand, remained inside Freedom 7 from launch to splashdown. Also, he manually controlled his spacecraft, which Gagarin didn’t do. In addition, the Mercury Shepard flew didn’t have a proper window, so he made his observations of the ground through an on-board periscope.

Back then, holds and delays in launches were common and the story is told of something that happened to Shepard. On the day he flew, he had to wait several hours because of all sorts of technical problems. Unfortunately, his metabolism couldn’t wait, so there he was, bolted into the Mercury and he found that he had to relieve himself. No one had thought that it would ever become a problem.

There was considerable debate in mission control as to what to do. Eventually, he was given permission to–well, you know–in his suit. That incident is given a somewhat humorous treatment in the film adaptation of Tom Wolfe’s book The Right Stuff.

In 1971, Shepard commanded Apollo 14 and landed on the moon.

    1. Thanks for the post and the link, very interesting. Hard to believe it was 60 years ago.

  2. Put a bunch of rocks in the Hellmann’s jar and throw it in the lake to Sinka The Mayo.

    1. Years ago, I remember talking to a number of hams located in southern Arizona and California over a satellite on the 5th of May.

One of them made reference to “Cinco de Mayo”, so I gathered that it was a significant date in the calendar down there. The window of accessibility for the satellite was coming to a close for me when I heard that comment and I never asked for further details.

        1. The way I heard it was that Mexico was one of the first of the new sovereign states in the post-Napoleonic world, and the first to work the scam where a small group of families gets control of the government, uses the sovereign borrowing power to take vast loans on the international markets, then divert most of the money by various means into the personal hands of the families, leaving the government insolvent for the taxpaying public to restore. It’s the way of the world now, but the Mexicans figured it out first.

As it happened, when Mexico defaulted, most of their creditors were French, and one was Louis Napoleon personally, so France effectively put Mexico into receivership, figuring that it had the resources to pay the debt if it was just properly administered. At that point the most respected administrator in Europe was the Archduke Maximilian of Austria, who had taken on the complex and ramshackle Austrian government and produced a model of efficient competence. He agreed to become receiver-manager, but his dignity required a more elevated title, so he was acclaimed Emperor of Mexico.

He proceeded to give Mexico sound, competent, honest administration and sensible policies. The economy began to flourish and the budget to balance. When the Mexican people saw what was happening, they rose up in outrage, took up arms, slaughtered Max and drove the French out, to declare themselves proudly bankrupt and go on pioneer that institution we now know as “Latin American government”. Thanks to Cinco de Mayo, Mexicans need never again fear the return of honest, competent government!

Of course, I don’t really know much about this. For years I thought “Cinco de Mayo” was a Chinese restaurant in Ireland…

    2. the beautiful instrument that is the voice of the talented Rose Max, thank you

P.S. I forgot to insert some Spanish music. Rose Max’s “Girl From Ipanema” is sung in Portuguese!!! Right? Please forgive the error. The song is great in any language.

    1. A little bit of surprisingly relevant history. She likes repeating herself.
The technical details are not relevant to the issue, but pay attention to the political doctrine and the interplay between military and the state that shaped the future events.

  3. Anyone looking for a book to read can line up for one called “The Bench” by Meghan, “Duchess of Sussex”.
In it she talks about the special relationship between fathers and sons!
Her unmitigated gall knows no bounds!

“the special relationship between fathers and sons!”

prince charles was apparently unavailable for comment.

    2. Sorry Liz J…I would rather watch paint dry than waste time reading anything about MeAgain and pussy-fied Harry!

For those two that wanted a “private life” they seem to get their faces and opinions in every news media they can. Hypocrites,

      1. Appears she still wants to be a Duchess…..she’s Duchess Meghan in her “private” life.

    3. Anyone who believes she is capable of writing any kind of book is dreaming in technicolor. Ghost writers come cheap, especially from the mainstream media who are experts at making shit up.

  4. Join the Trudeau cult and get free Yoga lessons from Sophie!!!!!! Yes, the National Post reports that Blackie’s wife is offering free Yoga lessons to Liberal staffers. Waiting for further information on whether she will sing and wear her funny clothes from India. Her groups will be a great replacement for the old Hare Krishna cult members at airports. Of course instead of chanting Hare Krishna, they will be chanting Justin Trudeau.

      1. Ah, so Soapy figures she should start earning her keep for a change, eh?

        1. I guess that podcasting job with Keilbugers’ WE ain’t working out as planned.

  5. Any SDAer interested in working at a federal-airport-quarantine-hotel? 13 workers at Toronto hotel test positive:
    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-toronto-airport-hotel-where-13-staff-tested-positive-for-virus-wont-be-2/

“Public health officials in Toronto say they won’t fully shut down a federal quarantine hotel for international travellers where more than a dozen staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.

Thirteen staff at the Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport Hotel had tested positive for COVID-19 as of Tuesday.

Toronto Public Health says inspections on Tuesday found some areas for improvement like more restrictions in the lunch room, more signage and centralized screening.

It says the workplace implemented public health’s recommendations and inspectors found strong adherence to public health measures.

Workplaces in Toronto with five or more COVID-19 cases may be ordered to close, but public health says because the hotel provides an essential service it may only face a partial closure.

The federal government requires anyone flying into Canada to isolate at a hotel for three nights to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19”.

  6. The University of Alberta is in cahoots with China on a number of security-sensitive research projects:
    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-alberta-vows-to-curb-universitys-research-ties-to-china/

“The Alberta government is expressing alarm and vowing to take action to curtail the University of Alberta’s collaboration with China in strategically important scientific and technology fields.

Advanced Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides said he intends to speak to the University of Alberta’s administration about the need to curb scientific research that could undermine Canada’s national interest. National security experts warn China could use these collaborations to steal Canadian intellectual property for the benefit of Beijing’s military apparatus.

The minister was responding to a report in The Globe and Mail this week that found the University of Alberta is carrying out scientific collaboration with China that involves sharing and transferring research in strategically important areas such as nanotechnology, biotechnology and artificial intelligence.

Under an agreement with China’s Minister of Science and Technology, University of Alberta researchers have gained access to at least 50 state labs in China since 2005, while upward of 60 professors have received grants for more than 90 joint projects with state and national labs in China.

In some cases, professors and researchers at the university have set up companies in joint ventures with Chinese companies and state institutions to commercialize Canadian-developed technologies”.

On this note, I will be emailing Robert Fife and Steven Chase about culling through the NSERC data base to see if our federal government is funding some of the security-sensitive research. NSERC has a data base which is easy to use, and can ferret out U of Alberta grants according to science and technology fields.

(Sorry, like a klutz I accidently posted these two posts on yesterday’s thread).

  7. sharing and transferring research in strategically important areas such as nanotechnology

That’s been going on at the U of A for at least 30 years.

  8. Blacklock reports that Justin’s federally funded home equity tax advocate, explained to the fake parliament yesterday, that a tax is needed because homeowners are getting rich at home sleeping and watching TV.

    1. Everybody is seeing substantial inflation…
…except central bankers, debt-soaked politicians, and their Modern Monetary Theory enablers. This will not end well.

  9. Media is excited about the runaway Chinese rocket that could fall anywhere on Earth. It will probably fall on a lineup of people waiting to get their China virus vaccine.

    1. Unfortunately Harrington Lake is outside the band where it will fall. Another opportunity lost!

  10. The true wuhan flu story: thirty years of neglect, by successive governments, of all major Parties.

“In the year between March 2020 and April 2021, more than 4,000 elderly residents of Ontario died from COVID-19, the result of decades of government neglect and policy failure — a tragic story documented in brilliant clarity in the final report of the province’s Long-Term Care COVID-19 Commission.”

    And …

“Over the years, through the 2003 SARS viral outbreak, the H1N1 events in 2009 and the Ebola threat of 2014-16, numerous reports and studies warned of the need to prepare for a serious killer pandemic. Nothing happened. By 2017, Ontario’s auditor general warned that the province was “vulnerable to a large-scale emergency.”

  11. GosFed?
    Editorial of The New York Sun | May 4, 2021 | * *

Is that what we want — GosFed? That’s our jibe, not Ms. Shelton’s. It’s a play on Gosbank, for Gosudarstvenny Bank, the name of the Soviet central bank.-
    – [snip]
It “may surprise people to learn,” Ms. Shelton writes, “that not a single dissenting vote was cast by any member of the Fed’s Board of Governors throughout the eight monetary-policy meetings in 2020 and the three meetings held so far this year. The same is true for 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014, covering Mr. Powell’s years as Fed chairman and the entire term of his predecessor, Janet Yellen.”

  12. Breaking news: apparently, the Whistle Stop Cafe in Mirror, Alberta was raided by police this morning.

    Welcome to Komrade Kenney’s Alberta.

    1. The provincial government is showing everyone who is boss in this province after they became the laughing stock of the World. They’ve been humiliated and they won’t have it. This is ugly, look what we’ve become under these childish politicians. This is doubly embarrassing.

    2. I am sure they will lock the doors on many more businesses soon – like Best Buy, Footlocker, costco , wallyworld, ect. After all , anyone can stay at home for two weeks and you won’t die even if you have no food (unlike killer china virus) .The reason we are at this point is no one believed there was a slippery slope. Walk into your home , seize your firearms , keep everyone safe. Don’t fill out your census , we will hammer you. Refuse a road side test without council – you are guilty. Defend your home- you get charged. Now we have – lock you up at the border , who you can meet with , what you believe and curfews. Thank you pet and all the other premiers , you have no right to property. And we are not even close to the bottom of the slope.
      ,

  13. Apparently – Kenny wants a “newbase”. Well Mr Kenney – when you try to come in for a home run – you are gonna find yourself OUT!
Read a recent issue of the Western Standard for Kenneys speech.

  14. The Liberal Party’s Toronto Star explains today that doctors throughout Canada’s history have committed genocide against indians.

  15. Blackie The Gay Pirate has screwed things up again for Canada. This is what happens when the Groper agrees to the UN declaration on whiny indian rights. National Post reports that the grand poobah of indians in Nova Scotia, has made a request for UN Peacekeepers to protect indian lobster fishermen as they ignore government regulations and fish whenever and wherever the hell they want.

    1. I say let them fish whenever. Let them destroy fish stocks. Let them bankrupt themselves. It’s the only way they’ll learn.

      1. Ah Chris … what about the rest of us “non-natives” who enjoy a fish and chip meal on Fridays? I guess we could go to McD’s for their undersized portions.

  17. L – No MSM radio/TV has done a long form interview with Canada’s most famous Canadian, an internationally accomplished authour and public educator. Because, they they cower in fear of the Trudeau regime, who has declared truth to be discriminatory.

  18. To all SDA’ers You are the most sarcastic bunch on anywhere.
And I find it immensely enjoyable.

    1. Saw Dr. Fuellmich’s lengthy video stating their case that you posted last winter.

I wish the team of over 1,000 lawyers and over 10,000 medical experts led by Dr. Reiner Fuellmich well in their legal proceedings against the CDC, WHO & the Davos Group for crimes against humanity.

Thanks for both your posts, Watcher.

  19. I had the misfortune of filling out the census today. It is a complete invasion of privacy. the majority of the 70 odd questions have no bearing on the census. We are slowly creeping toward a Chinese style dictatorship something that the turd in Ottawa admires. Wake up Canadians before there is no turning back

    1. Every time I ever filled one out for the last 30 years, I fill it up with obscenities about who ever the current pm is, I just write a big political tirade across all the pages. I fill in my name address age what ever properly. The actual legal or should I say what a census should be asking I fill in, all the rest I fill with as much bullshit as I can muster that day.

    2. Husband did as well. Really wanted him to put the cat as head of the household. Also was tempted to have us both switch “genders” and see how that would mess up things.

      1. Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for when Virgin Galactic will be doing the same, after making all sorts of promises year after year after year.
