What’s it called? Monorail!

Lately we’ve heard of some overtly Marxist policy proposals emanating from the federal NDP convention, but concerned about being upstaged, the ruling Liberals have apparently decided to counter with some overtly Simpsonesque ideas at their own convention.

This year’s policy resolutions run a wide spectrum, with resolutions on such issues as expanding rural internet access, raising old-age security payments and creating a high-speed rail network across the country.

As the nation slides into bankruptcy, supposedly we can take comfort in owning the world’s most expensive railway tunnel between Banff and Vancouver.

    1. For what it’s worth China built a bunch of higher speed rail lines between Shanghai and Beijing in the last decade or so. JT must be getting coached by his impressive uber progressive pal Xi. If the CPR built Canada maybe the CCPR will force it to remain together.

  1. Sort of reminds me of rocket sleds and rock walls…
Love us, we are all in this together. Big smooches all.
Ops, that’s against the law now…hmmm.

  2. What is it with the Left and Railroads?

    1827 – 1st US RR
    1836 – 1st Canadian RR

So, it is 8 hours by plane from Halifax, let’s say, to Vancouver. At an average speed of 150mph, and that would be including stops a long the way, it would be 24 hours by train. Why is that a technological wonder to the Communists and Socialists of Canada?

Please do not tell the Left wing idiots about high speed Conestoga Wagons or High Speed Chariots – they might fall for them.

    1. Omg c’mon man.
My last train ride from Calgary Palliser station to Thunder Bay (CPR) was at least 36 hrs.
Driving takes two 12 hr stints.

    2. Today you can board a train in Cornwall Ontario, and in 24 hours, you’ll still be in Ontario…

      1. True. But you can understand why someone would want to board that train, right?

  3. High speed rail across the country.
But wait Liberals, won’t that be an immense boondoggle that will require billions in subsidies to run?
As long as the experts that they lavishly pay to do feasibility studies that tell them exactly what they want to hear say it’s a totally awesome project, that’s good enough. When it all goes to hell and becomes a taxpayers nightmare then these things could not have been predicted. Everyone said it would be a catastrophe, but the experts said it would be a success so therefore it was not something that could be officially foreseeable and have culpability attached to it.

  4. “The California High-Speed Rail Authority on Wednesday bumped its overall cost estimate for completing the rail line between San Francisco and Los Angeles to $80.3 billion ….”
“The price tag of the massive project to build a Los Angeles-to-San Francisco high-speed rail system has shot up from an original estimate in 2008 of $33 billion with service starting in 2020 to at least $100 billion with an uncertain start date.”
“Downtown Los Angeles …… between Union Station and San Francisco in 2 hours and 40 minutes, a distance of 380 miles (610 km)”

What exactly does it mean “a high-speed rail network across the country”, do the so called ‘Liberals” even know what is it that they are talking about.

Would suggest that the politicians have absolutely no clue what so ever what’s involved, though the plebeians, no doubt, will like the talk and vote for the same useless slimeballs as usual.

    1. The CA High Speed Rail Authority has also made outlandish claims of projected ridership. What a crock. More Californians will take the Greyhoud Bus than will ride the high speed (Max. 72mph) choo choo train. The left wing “green” political entities continue to LIE to our faces. With impunity. Unashamed.

  5. We all know how well the highspeed rail in California has worked out. By all means, let’s do it here! /sarc

  6. The NDP socialist/fascists/green and the Liberal green/fascist/socialists certainly have the so called left and bankruptcy sown up. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for their center-left, me too, wanabe fascist/socialist/green O’Toole and his Red Tories. I have no idea where a conservative or libertarian could vote or live.

  7. Transporting people and freight is never the point of these “Infrastructure projects”
The massive opportunities to steal, while appearing legit is the only reason.
    Addscam on steroids.
Part of Jean Cretins pique over Add Scam, was he has been party to way bigger steals, enriching all involved..The irony to be called to task over such a tiny theft..
Just as the (Former) Kinder Morgan upgrade would not have cost taxpayers a penny, but now ,under government ‘management’, it piles up the delays and costs..A feature not a bug.

Should such spending go ahead, the larceny will be legend.
“Engineering Firms” and Construction “contractors” will appear from no where all government certified as competitive, when their only skill will be Liberal party Affiliation.
Government is the definition of corruption, especially when Kleptocracy rules.

    1. Engineering firms (aka SNC)
      Construction contractor (aka Ellis-Don)
And let’s not forget any funding directed to cities will be contingent on a contract with one or both of the above

  8. Abolish billionaires by taxing all gross wealth above $1 billion at 100 per cent

Note the words: “gross wealth”. This is not a tax. It is a seizure of assets. And this is what passes for “conservative” in your country? Hint: it will only START at one billion

    1. No, Kenji. They’re not conservative. The NDP is Canada’s Labour Party. But unlike in the past, the NDP are now the playthings of the ‘moderate’ Left Liberals: the NDP makes a point of appearing truly wacky, so that the slightly-less-wacky plans of the Libs look reasonable by comparison. But they aren’t.

        1. Kenji they are all communist. There is absolutely no policy difference between Cons/Libs/NDP/Green/BQ/PC/UCP they are all Commie all the time the only difference is the timing of the policies.

      1. No David, the NDP pretty much abandoned labour years ago, they’re now the radical “woke” environmentalist lefty (beyond socialism) party .

    2. In Canada that would mean that the 45 people who qualify would take up residency in tropical paradise (along with their capital) but the policy makes for a good actualization of the politics of envy resentment and hatred that is the prime motivation and pathology of the left.

    3. Does Canada have any Billionaires?

it’s a stupid plan because people who have a lot of money, as tend to be able to move anywhere they want.

  9. Surely Trudeau and the assorted Liberal assholes know we don’t even have a rural bus system while they hand out billions in subsidies to urban transportation. They really do hate everyone outside of Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

  10. Cross Canada High speed Rail…….

SNC has already started hiring and paying bribes for the Engineering..

Bombardier is assembling rail cars as we speak.

    LOL

    1. “Bombardier is assembling rail cars as we speak.”

Bombardier excels at cashing government cheques. Assembling anything is normally a couple years behind schedule.

      1. I’m reminded of my son’s trip to Japan a couple years ago. He traveled many different commuter high speed trains (and filmed impressive videos of just how FAST they actually travel). But MOST impressive was … the luxury. Each over-cushioned seat was appointed with a fresh head doily every stop. The trains and the stations were immaculately clean. The floors were luxuriously carpeted.

By contrast, our BART trains, here in the slums known as the SF Bay Area smell of urine and vomit. The surfaces are designed like prison cells, with hard surfaces, and graffiti resistant materials (to no avail). Truly disgusting. And the passengers? Even more disgusting … and dangerous. Thankfully, COVID has ENDED BART ridership. It’s down 90% … and it ain’t NEVER coming back. So our sales taxes (in BART counties) will spiral up and up to offset the losses … even AFTER Biden throws Billions at the deficit infrastructure black hole of BART. Those train “drivers” have got to maintain their $250k salaries (with overtime), eh?

The contrast between a CLEAN, culturally pure country … and the multi-culti morass of America is shocking. In Japan, the least common denominators are shunned and put in their place. In America the least common denominators are exulted and given free run to diminish the quality of life for EVERYONE.

Sorry. All cultures are NOT equal.

  11. They used to call it “Das Kapital” when it was first published, then a paper hanger did a rewrite and a bit of editing and re-titled it “Mein Kamph”.
The liberals are just recycling the DNC version that they titled “new green deal”.

I would think at this point the liberals could lose the next election however OToole spouting the same nonsense my expectation is the lowest voter turnout of any federal election ever.

  12. Monorail ! Surely it would be called a ‘Diversity Rail’ in Canada. How about leaving our money in our pockets.

  13. The Spawn could take a lot more NDP vote this time as I doubt that Ragmeet has that much support in the non-Sikh, blue collar rank and file and with the Spawn not only as their de facto leader for the last year and a half but having implemented their policies (free stuff all around), they may have gotten use to his arrogance and qualifying ignorance.

  14. The Socialists want rail to move people alright, but not for what we’re thinking.

    Think cattle cars and gulags.

  15. In typical Canadian fashion, the feds would be about 487 trillion-billion-zillion dollars over-budget on their cross-country high-speed rail system. It would finally open, 79 years past the scheduled deadline. And it would be shut down during the first week of operation, by protestors blocking the tracks.

    1. Is there anyone in Calgary that wants to get to Edmonton in 30 minutes?

In the pre-NEP days, oil companies had offices in both Edmonton and Calgary. People would fly between both cities for meetings and the old PWA Chieftain Airbus was almost always full. Those trips were made more convenient as old airports in those respective places were readily accessible from downtown.

After PET’s war on western Canada’s oil industry, many of the Edmonton offices were closed and the staff moved to Calgary. The Edmonton municipal airport was closed a number of years ago and, I think, the one in Calgary is as well.

Because of that, plus a number of ways to conduct remote meetings being available now, there’s little reason for large numbers of people to travel between both cities for business purposes during the week. A high-speed rail line would, therefore, be economically unjustified.

  16. Maybe we could build a high-speed pneumatic tube system to send pods filled with happy tourists across country at near-supersonic speeds. Then, after the inevitable grisly accidents, we could repurpose it as an oil pipeline. Win win!

  17. What is it about the left leaning mindset that always wants to go backwards, no matter what the topic?

Energy? Go back to wind and solar generation.

Travel? Go back to trains (trains that run on wind and solar energy only – gotta wonder how well that will work out). How long before they start recommending stage coaches?

Sure, modern technology makes it better than the original, but wind and solar qualify as ancient energy sources, and we have much better now, like fossil fuels and nuclear.

And yes, high speed rail is better than the old steam locomotive, but we have much better travel options, like private automobiles that take you anywhere, not just restricted to the route between major centers. And airplanes that can take you to any city and town much faster than a high speed train and all you need to build is an airport (aka station) at either end. And the private sector provides the planes!

  18. How does Via Rail stay afloat?

    It doesn’t.

And how to we avoid those future Lac Megantics because of no pipelines?

Japan and South Korea have the volume and partial privatisation to keep such ventures going.

What is the next Simpsons episode that Canada will mimic? Will Dr. Nick Riviera administer these glorified flu shots?

  19. I just took a look at the NDP’s convention resolutions – utter insanity!

Ditto for the Liberals, just not quite as out-to-lunch.

  20. Just call it Keystone or Northern Gateway and watch them turn around and oppose it.

  21. Big ass carbon footprint X a million.
You can’t go hi-speed on a regular rail line with perturbances, let alone frost heaves. I’m no engineer, but I bet that means footings into bedrock, and rail support structure in between each footing…the whole 9,000,000 meters. May as well raise it up.
But in other words – insanity.
It would be cheaper and less polluting to let Canadians fly for free for the next 100 years.

    1. Put people in plastic bubble tubes and pressure shoot them through the pipe lines…
Since their trying real hard to get rid of them.

  22. Trudeau should just be satisfied with his legacy of being the only Canadian PM to have appeared in blackface (multiple times at that), screwing up the pandemic response, bankrupting canada, and destroying the energy sector. Why add any more embarrassments to his resume?

    1. Getting turned down for a seat at the U. N. big kids table? Being a complete prat with his prancing around in India? Elbowing a female MP in the chest? Being convicted of ethics violations…. more than once? Hiring a harridan to live in Rideau Hall? Building a second “cottage” at his hideaway to keep his wife happy?

Yeah, real accomplishments, aren’t they? Really makes you proud to be Canadian, doesn’t it?

    2. And speaking of screwing, I think you forgot the West Point Grey Academy erm, affaire……!

  23. Never
    Done
    Paying.
Vote NDP and you never will be.
Best use for the NDP members is collecting welfare as they bitch about how hard done by they are..when compared to people who actually work.
The first month of our new country will need to be spent encouraging freeloaders and parasites to depart,A.S.A.P.
Or by less violent methods by instituting the only income tax,in the land,is to be paid by those advocating using “public moneys” for welfare of any form.
    NDP?
Gone or forced to get a job.

  24. Next election I’m running for MP as a member of the Rhinoceros party. High speed rail? Heck, we’re gonna promise a tunnel from Bona Vista to Vancouver Island. And if reelected we’ll build another tunnel going the other direction.

    Suck on that, California.

  25. Calgary just can’t get a break. High speed rail is the fashionable thing! And yet, let somebody get high on speed while riding the light rail, and the crowd goes nuts on you.
