Great Moments In Engineering

h/t and commentary from Adrian;

End of an era in so many ways

It (Discovery of Brent) was responsible for building Europe not the UK , the whole reason that the experiment of Europe supposedly succeeded was because it was bankrolled by the UK’s oil and gas, plain and simple it could never have happened without it. Meanwhile the UK gave up any idea of sovereign wealth funds or becoming the Saudi Arabia of Europe.

The whole fucking lot squandered on a miserable ungrateful set of communist wannabe politicians.

  1. Very impressive.

Adrian’s comment could be so easily applied to our situation here in our benighted Dominion.

The extraction of materials that the world NEEDS, not wants, NEEDS, is hard and dangerous. Add to that is that it is often accomplished in arctic temperatures. Those that are able to do this kind of work are well compensated as they should be for undertaking a job that ultimately allows us to sleep comfortably in our beds when temperatures fall below -30.

That wealth that has been produced here has been squandered and stolen to primarily placate a group of people whose greatest contribution to the world is to stick a straw into the side of a tree while they sit inside a warm shack smoking Export As and drinking Labbatts Blue while the sap trickles out.

Now, those same individuals demand more and more while calling the good people that work to provide the precious commodity of the hydrocarbons to the world dirty and greedy. Not only that, but they are doing everything in their power to destroy an industry that actually allows them to enjoy the lifestyle they have. More so than any other industry in Canada. The mind boggles at such hubris but one sees the parallels in Europe.

Britain realized that the theft had to stop. It is more than past time for we in the West to do the same.

    1. So, how has this “trickle down economics” worked for you that we got tricked in to supporting worked for you?
How about that 41 trillion dollar debt that Canadians have?
That fantasy of economic reset is just a hope of our governments.
They don’t come off the bankers books that I have seen or heard.
Canadians traded in their engineering for laws that disallows this so other countries can.

Truth hurts when it is said out loud.
Politicians lie and we get sucked in.

      1. Canadian Federal Debt is just over 1 trillion dollars. Total Canadian Provincial Debt is just under 1 trillion dollars. Total Canadian Household Debt is somewhere around 2 trillion dollars. Where did the other 37 trillion in debt come from?

Truth hurts when statistics are exaggerated.

  2. A remarkable feat of engineering.
As for Adrian; STFU whining. The EEC was formed in 1957, the first oil shipment from Brent was in 1976. The Brent field could not have been developed but for input from many nations including Norway, Germany, Holland, USA and others. Sure as sh*t Britain could not have done it alone.
You are out of it now (the EU), lets see how that works out for you. Thus far it has been a complete disaster, but the worst is yet to come.

  3. “You are out of it now (the EU), lets see how that works out for you. Thus far it has been a complete disaster, but the worst is yet to come.”
    Please explain.Examples???

    1. Do your own research. I will prophesy that as a result of BREXIT, the UK will break up, Scotland will rejoin as an independent nation. Ireland will be in the EU as 2 political entities. England will be begging to rejoin in 10 years or so, but that won’t help much as all the other problems become unmanageable.

      1. What would be so bad about losing Scotland and Ireland? It would take the burden off the welfare rolls. It would be like Canada losing Quebec, the Atlantic Provinces, and Nunavut. Good, good, and good.

        1. Just FYI, only three offshore facilities in NL made 220 billion dollars in an 8 year time span… the Feds took their 8 percent and the oil companies took the other 91+ percent while the province just got a few jobs while the projects last. If the politicians weren’t paid off, all Canadians could have benefitted from 20 to 50 percent of the profits from our own oil… but they keep it all hush hush and put of the news. I’m sure the same goes for oil and gas out West and in Saskatchewan, too, a few jobs but the bulk of the profits go overseas or across the border. Oh, and all of this oil on the East coast was/is produced by generating power for free by using our natural gas. Over 20 years of peak production and absolutely nothing to show for it.

          1. Canadianoil&gas,
There would be more to show for our oil if the federal government would allow Canadians to have their own oil industry. With NEP, carbon taxes, $250 billion canceled projects and pipelines, every time Canadian workers and entrepreneurs are getting somewhere they get forced out and have to sell to internationals for pennies.

        2. Exactly!!!! Scotland has been a basket case since after the war. Ireland is nothing more than a tax haven. The European Union was nothing more than a preliminary start to a one world government. The European Parliament (?) was nothing more than another level of bureaucracy foisted on a population of sheep. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and the Union had too many weak links to begin with. Same as Canada, too many special interest groups dictating to our politicians and as a result we have fallen to third world status.

      2. Not one country in the EC is independent. They are all beholden to the dictators in Brussels.

      3. Roger, You have shit for brains. One of the “multitude” of reasons I left England for western Canada forty years ago, was precisely the joining of the UK to the EEU. There were many Brits that opposed it, but we peasants are never listened to, or even considered. I have not once ever gone back. Of course, it’s no better here in Canada now. Same shit, different days.

      4. Any body who wants the sheep buggers can have them. Why did Scotland in vent the kilt? Made their sex lives baaaahter.

        1. You heard the Rolling Stones song “Hey you get off of my Cloud” yes?

The Scots got jalousie and created their own song version to spite the English, it’s called “Hey McCloud get off ma yew”!

  4. I wonder what that operation cost. Knowing that it was the most PC corporation on the planet, I doubt that they were allowed to consider adding some iron fertilizer and reef habitat to the sea bed with judicious use of TNT saving many millions of dollars.

    1. The biggest expense would have been the self-propelled, twin hulled, floating dry dock.
Absolutely awe inspiring scale and execution.

  5. Lol Roger. Its so hard for anti-Brexit people to accept how their predictions were so wrong. Despite being hit hard by Covid, the UK is doing very well financially, and foreign countries and foreign countries are lining up to do business with them. Couldnt have got out of the failed EU fast enough. As predicted, European countries need the UK far more than the UK needs them. Desperate anti-Brexiters tried to delay the inevitable post-Brexit growth of the UK by demanding new votes, delaying negotiations etc. but now with full Brexit after Jan 1 things are going gangbusters.

If one is upset that UK citizens cannot work and travel as easily in other European countries, fair enough, but all the economic doom and gloom predictions and the predictions of sovereignty chaos in NI and Scotland have proven baseless. Not sure if youve seen the news, but in Scotland the Sturgeon-Salmond thing is what they are focused on, not sovereignty.

Like all arguments of how X is going to lead to economic disaster, this one was also false. Im old enough to remember when each of the governments of Harper and Trump were going to lead to economic disaster (so said our betters) and just like your prediction they were the opposite of the truth.

        1. How old was Harper, in 1970? How about 11. There were no “tanks in our streets”, because all we had then were a couple of Centurians and a bunch of APC’s. I’ve got the pics to prove it. Those troops in our streets would have happily shot every last Frenchy, without batting an eye…if politicians had let them.
As for oil profits, I drilled a lot of Canadian owned and operated properties in western Canaduh, which Kaybec got the lion’s share via “Equalization”. They block our exports through their territory and Tronna lets them. Something about a “Milch Cow”. Gretchen Whitmer might put an end to that, soon. Suits me fine. I also drilled a lot of National Oil Company land, too. Some outfit called PetroCanada. Suncor owns the land now, plus their overseas stuff. Some of that land goes way back to HBC days. Last I checked they were still Canadian owned. The land, not HBC.

  6. You gotta take the hat off for the engineers.
They rule be the physics, mathematics and logic.
Social justice, women’s studies, social engineering does not come into play, though you may have noticed, Shell is a woke company it sold interests in the oil business of Alberta and most of the talking heads are women and most of the doers are men.

It is a good thing that the idiot politicians had nothing to do with it. The whole platform would probably end at the bottom of the ocean.

    1. Canadians have a multitude of laws and restrictions that need approval before planning and construction begins.
One mine is at 12 years now.

And yet a foreign company can have approval in a “free trade” deal…
They don’t need to follow Canadian laws.

      1. Our farming community is a good example…
They are breaking Canadian laws only if reported.
So in other words, they are breaking the Canadian laws and just not caught.
Brings to question our Native Rights that Canadians don’t have now as we have given ours up to our politicians.
Our politicians really suck at their jobs!

        1. No, they are VERY GOOD at “their” job.

That this “job” is not what they claim to be doing is a different matter.

Globally, there is, as Pink Floyd sang, a LOT of it about.

  7. Pretty neat!
Since everything, absolutely everything is filtered through the lens of race it was obvious what was going on here. In a critical operation like this they simply can’t have people whose qualifications are anything less than impeccable. That means no racial quotas filled by semi-competent people just to be nice guys. There’s too much at stake to risk a screw up at any level.

  8. I would have just set a charge and sank them. Environmentally still less of an issue than all the bombs we dropped in the world trying to protect other countries dictator’s oil businesses. While we were fighting wars the communist built empires and mechanisms to destroying our way of life from within.

Trump had it all right: Let them fight and we build a strong moral nation here at home. We have everything we need to MAGA.

    1. One of the greatest under reported achievements of Trump was to make USA energy independent. After 80 years of the Middle East holding the world to political ransom with the Petro Dollar, suddenly they no longer had the upper hand, and just as suddenly Middle Eastern countries decide to recognise Israel after all this time. The Art of the Deal. And in his first weeks in Office that rotting hollowed out husk of humanity named Biden destroyed all that had been achieved and at a cost of thousands of jobs. For spite no less.

  9. should have made it look like an Amazon package on a porch, and it would have been gone in a flash!

  10. I’m not sure why they hauled them off when in just a few years they’ll be underwater due to the global warming that’s going to cause the seas to rise.

  11. “Do your own research. I will prophesy that as a result of BREXIT”
No ,you made the statement NOW BACK IT UP!!!

  12. Of course all this engineering was done with the old Math. I’m sure it could have been done at a fraction of the cost and in the most environmental friendly way possible with the new Woke Math. Remember, there are no right answers in Math anymore.

  13. Fantastic engineering. The best part of the video for me was near the end when manoeuvring the barge to the dock they had to line it up next to a yellow stick. After all the technology of alignments previously undertaken to get to that point, the final step was eyeballing a yellow stick. Love it.

  14. Great video!!

    Nothing is impossible for Shell!!

    Congrats!

Yours till they can fly a 777 with batteries!!
