One thing that’s being done this time is that each event during re-entry will be televised so mission control will know what’s going on. Should there be a failure, and, yes, it’s quite likely, a subsequent investigation will have a record of what took place.
There are enough spacecraft in orbit that parts of the landing can be photographed while in progress.
Just watched the coverage on NASA TV here in Florida. Amazing accomplishment, of course, but I’m spoiled by watching rockets live and seeing coverage with actual footage, an art being perfected by SpaceX. This was the usual dull pictures of people sitting in front of monitors. Occasional insertion of simulations to show what they were talking about. They finally gave us two photos of the surface they landed on. What struck me most was the sight of all these very smart, mostly young scientists wearing not only one, but two masks. Sigh…
