  4. I mentioned that during my last trip to my house in B. C., I had deer wandering across my front yard.

    Before I returned home last time, I left some alfalfa underneath the big spruce tree. I also left some in the back alley along the fence. I’m back in B. C. right now, and, sure enough, earlier today I saw that some critters found both places and ate some of what was there.

    I left some more earlier tonight, so maybe they’ll make a return visit. They must be hungry if they come a km or so inside town limits.

    1. I put some more hulled sunflower seeds in the hanging chickadee feeder the other day and the birds flocked to it then back to their hiding places in the honeysuckle bush. Left some unwanted grapes in a flat plant plate — no takers yet, rather, not sure, if any.

      There are rabbit tracks all over the place in what was virgin snow. Haven’t seen the rabbit(s) for awhile. I think they are playing coy. In the evening, the motion light outside goes on and off, still nothing visible. Aren’t critters fun.

      It is a pretty wonderland though. There’s snow stuck to some shrub branches, here and there. When there’s a full moon, next one being on the 27th, one could see through the dark, as if it is dusk. Those nights are, or at least used to be, wonderful for a late night X-Country ski outing and a shot of liqueur, on the side.

      Hallelujah! It has finally warmed from -20 ish degree weather to a sunny and balmy -12°C today. My indoor geraniums have red blossoms on them! The cacti have pink ones and another has tiny white buds. Only a double-pane window glass is between them and Winter on the outside. They are hearty things. If this were possible– and they had faces, they’d be sticking their tongues out at old man Winter with a “nah, nah, na, nah-nah!”

      1. I had visitors this evening. After I finished shoveling snow, I wanted to check on the extension cord for my truck as I want to plug it in tomorrow and see if it still runs.

        I came out of the garage and I saw 2 deer in the back alley and, a few minutes later, I noticed one by the entrance of my next-door neighbour’s garage. One was clearly larger than the others, so I’m assuming it was a buck and 2 does. They came by after sunset and helped themselves to the alfalfa I left for them. They must have been there for about 5, maybe 10, minutes before they wandered off. I was on the other side of the fence about 15 metres away. I stood still and let them eat.

        Judging by the relative size of the ears, I’m assuming that they were mule deer. I was surprised to see them this far into town as my house is about 2 km south of the northern outskirts and also this soon after sunset. I would have thought that they would have come several hours later when there wouldn’t be so much activity, but I guess they must feel quite safe.

          Perhaps the scenario is that Doe is probably looking for food as she may be eating for one or even twin fawns. According to the web, the gestation period varies but is usually 7.5 months and they usually deliver in May or June, time varies from species to species.

          1. What surprised me was the time when they came, which was between 6:30 and 7:00 PM. People were still active and there were lots of lights in windows. I would have thought that the deer might have waited until the neighbourhood was darker.

            They were there for quite a while. I left the alfalfa in two places, dumping a large coffee can’s worth at each spot. I’m pretty sure they ate their fill before moving elsewhere.

          2. The ones that came here 2 years ago, came for lunch and sat around all afternoon until after dinner hour. They left quite a mess. I didn’t mind. They did some pruning for me and left natural fertilizer– ‘presents’.

            The neighbours across the street saw them at the side of the house and later remarked to me that they were watching them from time to time to see whether they left or not. There were 4 of them all ‘female’– maybe it was a ‘baby’ shower or something, they got drunk on the crabapples and then got too lazy to leave. What a time they had!

            And me too!
